Wonderful side trip! I discovered the De Ricci winery through travel friends who invited me on this enchanting tour, found on TripAdvisor for $31. I learned about the wine, the Etruscan history in Tuscany, and got to visit an ancient underground Etruscan temple! The wines offered during the tasting were lovely, most of them made with the sangiovese grape family. Fun fact: What animal is on the wine label? If I were to do this again, Id choose the other package on Trip Advisor for $39, as that included a sommelier. As this was, we were left to our own devices. Still fun but not completely satisfying. The little town of Montepulciano has an interesting history, as explained by our Montepukciano De Ricci wine tour guide. I wont share because its definitely part of the fun of the visit. The tiny town has a marvelous chocolate shop, museum and s tower which you can climb (only 75 steps!) and take incredible photos of the Tuscan countryside. read more

My husband and I stumbled upon this winery and realized we hit the jackpot about 2 minutes into our tour. The history is unbelievable and a must visit if you're in Montepulciano. Our guide was very knowledgeable and gave us details about their history while walking us through their Etruscan caves. Following the tour we sat down for a wine tasting. They just released a new prosecco which is the best I've tasted in Italy, but the stars of the show are their red wines. I don't remember how many they offer, 5 or 6, but they range from a bottle that is great for a glass with friends to bigger, very elegant reds for dinner. The wines are excellent and we ended up shipping a couple cases home to Texas. We felt very satisfied with our decision and were later validated that we made the right choice after finding out they are in the Forbes Top 50 wines in Italy- and there's something like 100,000+ wineries in Italy - so that's a pretty big deal. So in over 50 years of going on wine tours this was probably the best I have ever been on. In Montepulciano the winery has a great founding story involving weather predicting, hedge hogs, inquisitions and ancient excavation. Top of the winery is from the 16th century and goes down several levels to a 2500 year old Etruscan cave. Tour is both amusing and informative. Wine tasting was very good wines at a really good price plus food. GOOD food tastings. If you are in Montepulciano I highly recommend! read more

Seriously fine Italian wine. Great tour (not so great if you can't do a lot of steps). An 800 year old winery, rich history and a full range of amazing wines. We'd been taken to Montepulciano on a wine tour and wound up at Ricci, a winery. Great tour, great guide, fantastic wine with awesome stories (yes, I am all about the stories), physically, I would not do well but for visiting every few years or so, We were escorted and storied through the deep recesses of Montepulciano to a small tasting and dining room. There we were treated to light fare (crustini, cheese and capicola) for the lesser 3 varietals and a bowl Of Picci with a moderately heavy meat sauce for the final 3 selections...all reds, all with complex noses and all wonderful. If in Montepulciano, this is a must-see for wine and history buffs. A fun historical experience capped by good wine-tasting. One enters at the entrance at the top of the hill on which the town of Montepulciano lies, then walks and goes down stairwells through a cavern originally used/created by ancient Etruscans and now used to store and age wine. Very cool to see. The walk terminates at the bottom level in the retail store of the winery, where one can enjoy a wine tasting. After tastes of two wines offered by the (friendly and experienced) server, she asked if we would like to try another wine. My wife requested the "Vin Santo". The server silently turned to a man sitting at a desk working at a computer. Without looking up, he quietly nodded, and she walked to a cabinet behind the counter and pulled out the precious bottle of Vin Santo. Lovely taste - we purchased a bottle to fly home with us. To return to the top level of the hill after exiting the store, turn right and walk up the small slope. read more

We were looking for a convenient wine tasting in the center of town with a large wine cellar, and this one fit the bill. We walked through the wine cellar (which they call a wine cathedral due to its size) on our own without a tour, but looking back on it, I wish we had opted for a tour, since we didn't know what we were looking at and ended up finishing up in 10 minutes. When you come back up from the cellar, you're greeted by a tasting, which involves four or five of their wines and is free if you buy a bottle. Otherwise it's 3€ per person. The lady pouring the wine was very friendly and knowledgeable, and there is a nice seating area where you can enjoy your wine with Italian crackers. The wine was great overall. We are not big wine drinkers, so I can't tell you how it stacks up against other wines in Italy, but we both found at least one wine in the tasting that we really enjoyed. We didn't end up buying any due to lack of carry-on space but it was still a pleasant and cheap way to spend an hour in Montepulciano. I recommend making this part of your visit if you're in the area. read more

Probably the best wine tasting experience we've had (and we've been to quite a few). Awe-inspiring medieval palace with underground caves where the wines are aged. The tour itself was fantastic, and the pici served for the light lunch was something we'll remember for a long time. Afterwards, you're in the perfect location for a stroll around the charming hill town of Montepulciano. Be sure to check out the view from the vantage point on top of the winery. We had a really excellent visit to this wine shop. The tasting of six wines was perfect amount for our group (mixed of wine buffs and beginners), and they brought out little bites of food for us to pair with. They let us enjoy at a leisurely pace and didn't rush us, which was nice. And the wine was delicious, so we ended up buying a few cases to have shipped home. We also really enjoyed the tour of the cavernous "wine cathedral" and learning about the history of the place. Definitely would recommend. read more

Named the most beautiful wine cellar by the BBC, Cantina de' Ricci met all expectations. Located in the beautiful mountaintop village of Montepulciano, the wine cellar is conveniently located near the center of town. We had a 'light' lunch that consisted of wine tastings of 6 different wines, bruschetta with three different toppings, the most wonderful lasagne made with white sauce and oodles of cheese, followed by an antipasti plate consisting of prosciutto, salami, sausage and three different kinds of pecorino cheese. I was thrilled to find my now-favorite pecorino cheese with truffles included on the plate. The meal ended with dark chocolate made only with cocoa and sugar - no butter or fat. To be called a light lunch, we left very full! It only cost 15 Euros per person - a great deal for that amount of delicious food and wine. After lunch we toured the cellar, and I was thrilled to walk through the tunnels and caves to find a well from the Etruscan era. Our host, Enrico, was so friendly and we had wonderful service at lunch. I absolutely recommend a visit if in the area, and it's good to make reservations for lunch in advance, if possible. read more

Go for the cellar, stay for the outstanding wine. CELLAR: Happened upon the cellar and glad we did. If you are only going to visit one cellar, this is it. The cellar is huge, ancient, interesting, and picturesque. It's cool. WINE: Not well known in the U.S., De'Ricci is part of a new wave of boutique Montepulciano vintners who are focusing on quality over marketing. Blessed with some historically great vintages, they just might get the attention they deserve alongside their more highly marketed neighbors from Brunello and Chianti Classico. Two wines stand out. 1. Vino Rosso di Montepulciano: excellent, drinkable, cheap as RdM's usually are. If your budget it at the low end, this is your wine as it is an exceptional value. (The best for last) 2. Sor Aldo Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2015: One sniff and sip is all it will take to fall in love with this wine. 100% Sangiovese. It shows this new wave of vintners is really going to change the image of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Refined, complex, subtle, nearly perfect expression of Sangiovese. I am a Brunello fan, but I might choose Sor Aldo over a Brunello, or even an expensive super Tuscan if I had to. At 30e, it is currently quite a bargain for a fine wine. We would pay 60+ in the US for this quality. We only bought a couple of bottles as we were leaving Italy soon but wish I had bought a case of Sor Aldo 2015 for MY cellar. read more

This winery in Montlepulciano is amazing. If you start on the uphill street side, you walk down all of these steps into the cellar that goes down about 40 meters. It's really cool and then you end up in the wine tasting room. Loved the wine. Had some shipped back. I think this was the best winery in town. read more

Very amazing wine cellars but subpar service in the wine shop. It seems as though the store manager or owner has something against mixed race couples as they served everyone that came in the store except us. She proceeded to stare up and down at us while not proceeding with the wine tasting for around 10 minutes, while we patiently waited at the counter. Subsequently other servers were uncomfortable with the managers lack of attention to us since she served everyone else that just came in, and the other servers tried to help us but the manager directed these servers to help others instead. Bottom line is to go see the cellars but buy at any of the other wineries which have never treated us like this ! read more

The cellars are some of the worlds oldest and voted as most beautiful. They are located just below the main square along via di collazzi below the main square.
