The place has a really good feel, it's pretty hip and has a great design. In my opinion it's fairly overpriced especially when compared to other restaurants in the city. The starter that we had was excellent but I had a steak sandwich that was poor in quality and was just very basic. My wife ordered the 45e giant shrimp which was good but certainly not worth that price. We also had a couple of cocktails, each took about 30 minutes to be delivered to the table and they were also underwhelming. We've eaten far better meals since we've been here and this was by far the most expensive, I would make another choice. read more

This was our first stop in Lisbon. First time in Portugal, so we were unaware of the custom of couvert. (Unasked for appetizers that you have to pay for if you eat) Although tasty, we were somewhat surprised to see it on our bill! My friend ordered a meatball curry, which was quite good. I had flaked codfish, which, while tasty, was such a small portion I left the restaurant hungry. A pleasant experience, but overrated in my opinion. Maybe I ordered poorly. Well... this is pretty hard to describe. All in all, I was a bit disappointed, although the food is still pretty good. What we ordered: Tuna & 21st century professor style eggs: The starters were great. Especially, the eggs are very interesting and delicious. I would strongly recommend to try them. As main course we had the Tatar Steak and the Risotto. The risotto, definitely, was the better choice. I didn´t have much but what I tasted was really good. The Tatar steak was a bit boring. The tatar itself was great, but the fries that came with it were not very creative, and I am sure you had better fries before. Also, Basil was mentioned on the menu, which is not exactly wrong. But I expected more than just some torn leafs on top of the fries. At the end we tried the raspberry cheesecake and the creme brûlée (with orange). Again, I had better ones before. The cheesecake was with basil, too. Again just some torn leafs. For the price of it, and the reputation of the chef, I thought it should be at least included in the actual cake or the cream. The cream brûlée was not crispy at all. I think that is the minimum you should expect if you order it. As I wrote it was not bad, but it could have been more creative. I really missed the "Wow, you gotta try it!" - moments. Plus, the fact that you have to pay a cover charge is strange, I think. I didn´t not have to pay that anywhere else in Portugal and a restaurant that wants to impress with good food should concentrate on that and not make its money with knifes and forks. Focus on small plates. Great lunch spot. The food is informal but thoughtful and tasty. Liked the partridge pie and scallop carpaccio a lot. Things can be just a tad salty here but that maybe the norm in Lisbon. read more

Great food and awesome service! We came here for my birthday and ate at Pateo, which is one of the many restaurants in Cantinho do Avillez. The inside is gorgeous! What an absolutely fantastic meal. We didn't have a reservation but were accommodated without much hassle (we waited about 10/15min); the starters (fried strong beans, meat pies and sausage) were exceptional. The mains were a delight. Lamb cooked to perfection, octopus melts in your mouth, and meatballs phenomenal. Wine was glorious. All in all....10 out of 10 hands down. read more

This place has pretty good food and deserves exactly 4 stars and no more. We had a reservation for 10 and didn't get our table until 10:30pm even though we showed up right on time, I know this can happen with popular restaurants but this shows poor restaurant planning if reservations are waiting 30 minutes. Everything we ordered was quite good except the scallops were so salty they were inedible. The burger with foie gras was overcooked as well but still had nice flavour. The restaurant severely lacks atmosphere. I felt like as soon as we walked in I had to lower my voice and speak quietly. Also no decor whatsoever. The staff was very friendly though and offered recommendations which was nice. Menu is extremely random. So random to the level I dislike, I don't want to eat a burger and lamb tagine and green curry. It's so odd to be eating such different cuisines. Don't think the dishes compliment each other. read more

Supposedly a restaurant that should be on your list, it features somewhere on my list of those to avoid. Greeted at our appointed reservation time (we were not late) by one of those supercilious stick insects 'trendy' venues seem to employ, we were taken to the 'second' room devoid of the tablecloths evident in the 'first' room as if we were 'undesirable'. From then on it seemed a race was on; could they, or could they not hustle us out again in under half an hour? Their contribution was supermarket butter laced with too much truffle oil perhaps to add an element of 'sophistication', cocktails better described as cock-ups - both of them - and a fare best described as a mediocre effort any half competent cook could extract from a discount book store cook book. All delivered at a breakneck pace that barely saw one set of cutlery lifted from the table before replacements, dish and solicitations were delivered once again. Yes, they did it in under half an hour - the ice in my glass (a Mohito - allegedly - that had never been west of the Azores) still fresh at the end. Congratulations! Bring on the next shift, please. We came here because we wanted to try Jose Avillez's food. We originally wanted to go to Belcanto (the ten-table restaurant that gave him 2 Michelin stars), however we did not have reservations and were not in Lisbon long enough to wait. That being said, we decided to try his non-white table cloth restaurant (there is also one in Porto). We did not make reservations, but were able to get in at 9pm on a Tuesday night. They said they could get my party of three in no problem. So we got seated at the only available table, the catch, it was a four seat table (all seats one one side) adjacent to the bar and away from "the action." The cocktails we ordered were great and the food was amazing. Drinks, appetizers, and main courses flew out of the kitchen. However, the service is sub-par. The bar tender took our drink order and then we asked him if we were to order our food from him. He said no, it's best for my colleague to do that. Yet, five minutes later the bar tender came to take our order. Everything was fine until the dinner rush hit. At 9:30 4 different parties came (they had reservations). This was when service basically became non-existent. We sat at the cleared table with empty glasses waiting for some sort of acknowledgement from the wait staff about dessert or checking out. After a little more than 30 minutes of being ignored by all the waiters walking straight past the table to the kitchen and bar I decided to ask the house manager who was using the register that was right at the end of our table if we were every going to see a dessert menu. He was apologetic and got us menus immediately. Then it took another 30 or so minutes to order. If it wasn't for my father glaring down the house manager, he wouldn't have stopped to take our dessert order. Finally we got our dessert and closed our bill. He asked how everything was and we said it was okay. Food was great, but service was terrible. He seemed to just accept it and offered no sincere apology (however a waiter decided to hold open the door for us on our way out). Like I said before, fantastic food, but terrible service. If you're a Michelin star chef, it is expected you have incredible service. If you can't meet those expectations, don't seat people at a table you are bound to overlook and forget. It made for what could've been a great night to a very unpleasant experience. read more

Average food and appalling service. Or maybe it was a problem only with this one waiter, who insisted and wouldn't let it go with his claim that my wife and I were Brazilian, even though we are not and said it clearly that we are not. Every time he would say, "huh, I thought you were Brazilian". I don't care about being Brazilian or any other nationality, but he wouldn't let it go. He would come by and start speaking in Portuguese, which we told him we don't understand, like he wanted to "catch us" lying about it. At the end of the meal, which by the way took us some 45 minutes if that, while I was waiting for another waitress to bring the card reader, as I wanted to pay by card, he leaned to me and said: "You have to hurry up, we are quite busy tonight". I couldn't believe it, and I asked him: "you want us to hurry up and leave because you are busy?". And he said "yes". The other staff was professional though, but I'll never go to that place again. read more

Had relatively high expectations going into this meal as we had eaten at Minibar the week prior at the beginning of our trip. Maybe it was an off night (Sunday) but we did not have a great experience. To begin with, the entire restaurant had an antiseptic smell as if they had just cleaned the whole place with bleach. Service was very slow and inattentive, the exact opposite of Minibar. It took 15 minutes for anyone to come to our table and take our drink order. They brought our main courses to the table next to us and ignored the confusion of the people sitting there, and we basically figured it out and had our neighbors pass us the food. There was no acknowledgement of the mistake. Food was fine, slightly elevated traditional Portuguese, but after eating many of the dishes in local restaurants the week prior we felt that the "updates" they made only detracted from the dishes. For example, the Farinheira sausage was removed from its casing, spread out in a small cast iron dish and topped with cornbread. Given this type of sausage already contains flour (as is quite interesting as a result), putting more bread on top of it is overkill. Tuna tartar was good but boring. Meatballs in green curry sauce were enjoyable, and a good diversion from everything else we had been eating. Very good cocktails as at Minibar. Overall, I think this restaurant has gotten lazy as they will inherently be busy given the fame of the chef and the fact that they mostly cater to tourists. Go to mini bar instead for Avillez's food or a more local spot. read more
