The pub itself is cosy and welcoming, full of character and very friendly, warm staff. Many little nooks where you can enjoy your meal and conversation with low level music in the background. It was a cold day so we were glad tat there were (many gas) open hearths around. It is located right next door to a ancient but very well tended church (St. Ostwald's). We decided to go with lunches from the Christmas offerings. We both enjoyed our (different) 3 courses (see the pics!). I have recalibrated my standards and so if I can only give Raphael in Bath 5 stars then it is going to be VERY tough for me to give 5 stars to anywhere else! She is very self-conscious and has difficulty cutting food with one partly-functioning hand, and hates fuss. She was at ease in a quiet corner and had the confidence to ask if there was any possibility of having an omelette. The chef agreed, offered a range of toppings and instead of feeling like an inconvenience, my aunt felt like a queen. Today was the first time she's had a meal, having been unable to eat more than toast recently. She had a little giggle with other diners and was amazed at the care staff gave to our old dog. We took her home, tired, happy and well-fed, to have a sleep. I cannot express how grateful I am for all the trouble and care Dana? (apologies for spelling ) Chef and your f.o.h staff took to bring her happiness. The food was terrific, and so was the beer.

That said it was my mother in laws birthday and I knew they were eating there in the evening with friends. I called up the pub to see if I could order a surprise birthday cake and pay over the phone. Although they said that they did not make birthday cakes they were happy to go to the local bakery and get me one I called up on the night not really expecting that they had as I had not been asked to pay anything. To my delight they had got the cake and I ordered a bottle of reasonably priced champagne at the same time. They couldn't have been more helpful even to the point of calling me back to say that my mother in law had almost been in tears when they gave her the champagne and told them my message. When the time for the cake came, they had added candles and the whole restaurant sang happy birthday. All in all they were great and made my mother in laws birthday really special!
