This is a smorgasbord of art galleries. At least 20 if not more. Very walkable and a restaurant positioned right in the middle if you need to stop and wet your whistle. I will say the galleries are colorful and full of beautiful art. But almost all the galleries were southwestern art. Think lots of flowers, desert scapes, animals and animal bones, some other forms of contemporary realism. Some jewelry shops. All free to enter of course. I had heard of this area for years, but hadn't gone to Santa Fe to explore it. Well, now I've had the opportunity and only wish I'd have done it sooner. As an artist, art walks and art districts are my life. It's not only research; it's also a source of regular inspiration. Canyon Road was dazzling with inspiration. The color that spilled from the galleries, the statuary that peppered the walkways, the road is a visual mapping of creativity. The galleries offer everything from antiquities to modern art, jewelry to textiles, crafts to fine art, open studio spaces to showrooms available for appointment only. There is definitely a southwest-influenced throughline along Canyon Road, but it's also got an international flair. There is a reason it's gained a reputation as a cultural art hub. If you find yourself in Santa Fe or planning a trip there, it is worth scheduling a half day or more for the experience. This "roadside attraction" is guaranteed not to disappoint. Every time I've been to Santa Fe since 1979, I've walked Canyon Road. Our visit last week was no exception. The various converted adobe home are always interesting, the slightly uphill walk is good cardio, and the various high end galleries are nice to look at, but not really to touch. It begins at the junction with Paseo De Peralta, and pretty much ends at Santa Fe Teahouse & Bistro (821 Canyon Rd) and Art Box (901 Canyon Rd) on either side of E Palace Ave. Paseo De Peralta (means Peralta's Promenade or Peralta's Walk) is a major street in Santa Fe, named after Don Pedro de Peralta (1584?-1666), the Spanish colonial governor of New Mexico who established Santa Fe as the capital in 1610. What a lovely area full of galleries and shops! Canyon Road is the arts district that is about a 15 minute walk (maybe slightly less) from the center of downtown Santa Fe. We went on a Friday evening for an art walk. Sadly, I read the website and got the idea that the galleries are all open late on Fridays and had several special exhibits. It was called something like the Friday Night Art Walk. In reality, there are only a few galleries open on Friday night.... whichever have art openings that night. For us, that night, there were four galleries open. We were a bit disappointed, but enjoyed the ones we went to, and even bought beautiful jewelry in one of them. We were disappointed that there were not many galleries or shops open, but we explored and enjoyed the sculptures that were outdoors everywhere. Despite the fact that most of them had closed at 5:00, we still enjoyed ourselves. We were not able to get back there during the day, but if I find myself back in Santa Fe, I would definitely go. read more

We loved strolling in and out of the shops all along Canyon Rd. It was such a beautiful area with so many amazing shops and pieces of art. We loved all of them and the beautiful history of the SW. We not only loved seeing all the beautiful paintings but the sculptures in and outside. There were so many beautiful pictures that told the story from the perspective of the indigenous person and cowboy. They were all so colorful and haunting. I also loved all the pictures of the gorgeous scenery, flowers, and plants. The one gallery was so cool because all the pieces were from the perspective of magical realism. Canyon Rd., Santa Fe,, NM, June 7, 2023 We arrived at about 10:30, found parking, and began our art exploration. There are about 100 galleries over a half mile stretch of Canyon Road, which is on the eastern side of Downtown Santa Fe. Some of the galleries we visited included those at 225 Canyon Rd. (The Legacy Gallery, Underwood Gallery, Tierra Mar, Meyer Gallery, and Luca decor to name a few), Gigi Contemporary Gallery, the Winford Fine Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden, and the Fredrick Prescott Gallery. We saw so many amazing pieces of fine art among the galleries we visited. Some of our favorites included Native American and western art at the Legacy Gallery and some amazing pieces at the Tiera Marr gallery. The Winford fine art gallery and sculpture garden included some awesome wind spinning sculptures in the garden and some impressive metal etching art by artist Tim Church. We came to Canyon Road just to take in all the beauty of the art; however, most all of the works we saw were for sale. Most prices were in there $2000-$100,000 price range, little too rich for our blood, but it was still enjoyable to see everything we saw. We really only scratched the surface. Canyon Road is a bohemian area of Santa Fe, within walking distance or short drive from the downtown area. It is a long row of many art galleries, which makes Canyon Road unique. Yes, there are restaurants around (not all very good, some too touristy, so choose wisely) and shops, but the attraction is the art. All the galleries differ, they showcase various styles and artists, from high brow to garden ornaments, sculptures and decor. The diversity makes this place special. Walking it is fun to browse and take in all the styles. They do close around 5 pm, but some displays can be admired from the street even later in the day after they close. The style of architecture of each house varies and the vegetation is beautiful and abundant. There are small gardens around you can stop in and relax. Canyon Road is a must see while in Santa Fe. Lots to see and discover, art, little detail, beautiful houses. Pleasant walk, nice area to shop, prices are high, but browsing and admiring art is free! read more

Spent an afternoon walking Canyon Rd and enjoying 100 galleries. Parking was easy on a side street. There were so many galleries and hidden walkways with more galleries. There are also jewelry, and a few clothing stores. Each of the gallery workers/owners were welcoming and willingly provided some background of the artists or the artwork. There is a variety of art styles to enjoy. We went on a beautiful sunny day to spend hours. The sidewalks are a but uneven, so wear comfortable shoes/sandals. An art lovers Mecca. With over a hundred galleries and shops in one half mile, there was so much to see on a crisp winter morning walk. From Native American traditional masters to abstract Contemporary artists, local works to Tibetan pieces, there were wide contrasts in the garden pieces on the lawns outside the galleries. Nice to be able to see so many different pieces on one art filled street. Love Native American sculptures? Definitely visit Manitou Gallery's Sculpture Garden. "She Walks in Beauty" by Ed Natiya shows the strength, beauty and grace of Pine Leaf, Woman Chief of the Crow. Accompanied by "Red Cloud-Broken Promises," they are a stunning pair. Check out Ed Natiya on Instagram to see how "She Walks in Beauty" was completed. Martha Pettigrew draws inspiration from Native American themes. "Enduring Spirit" features the protective nature between mother and child. "Water Song" pays tribute to women who are Keepers of the Water-a reminder that without clean water, we cannot live. Meyer Gallery, located next to Manitou Gallery, has such playful children's pieces. Love the child sitting on a large stack of books or the kids playing games. Wifold Gallery, located off the main road, had the largest sculpture garden that I visited. Enoyed the seemingly endless rows of wind and water sculptures. For large contemporary pieces, check out Venus by Michael Freed and Adam Rosen at Owen Contemporary or the kinetic wind sculptures by Mark White at Luca Decor. The colorful animals at Houshang's were so playful. Definitely worth a walk in Santa Fe. I'd recommend this as the #1 thing to do in Santa Fe as a tourist regardless of whether you're a huge Arts follower. Some tips for fellow Yelpers 1. The road is filled with innumerable galleries that display a wide variety of art (Contemporary, Modern and more) and my recommendation would be to break down your trip such that you cover different parts of this road on different days. 2. There are ample cafes and small restaurants along with galleries that will help you plan your trip better and take breaks as intended. 3. Our world wasn't aware of Canyon Road until the weeks before our trip to Santa Fe. A friend told us to pick a pretty day and enjoy the walk to the magical tea house near the end of the road, The Teahouse. Best. Advice. Ever. We spent a couple of hours meandering, taking pictures, watching dogs, noticing flowers blowing in the wind, observing art, walking through galleries and enjoying the splendid weather of the afternoon. We had no agenda and we fell in love with that moment of our lives which was: exploring Canyon Road. I can't speak to being on a mission to find artwork, as we just really enjoyed that which was. If you enjoy art, casually strolling, and appreciating the weather all while surrounded by Santa Fe architecture then this street should definitely be on your must-see list! There are several cafes to eat at, but the real draw is the art! Sure things are pricey but appreciating art is free ! Definitely take the time to walk in studios and let the creativity inspire you ! From sculptures to interactive art to paintings and beyond, there's something for everyone to enjoy. I personally enjoyed having the opportunity to stroll along so many sculpture gardens! There's also a historic building about half way down the road. We didn't have a chance to explore but did read the plaque. You can go in as well. Whether I knew it or not, this is what I thought Santa Fe was all about - fancy art galleries with a heavy southwestern vibe. And I mean 'heavy' in every sense of the word because there were a lot of wood carvings that would probably require a crane to transport. I never seen a city that just has a "art street." Pretty cool you park and walk about a half mile strip. Lots of different types of art; from motion to sculptures, and paintings. The issue you will find firstly is parking. The second is the prices of most the art.. I get it it's fine art, and I'm not up on who is considered a "master artist" but A LOT of this stuff was going for the same price as a Picasso. I saw a small sculpture for $30,000 and it wasn't even Silver!!! I think I saw one piece of art that was less than $500 but that was it. The majority of "everything" was well in the thousands. Maybe it's just me, but if I had an extra $30,000 to throw on some art I'd just give it to someone and help change their lives. read more

Best place to take tourist without spending money in Santa Fe. Better than downtown in my opinion. Mostly outdoor. Full of many animated sculptures from spinners to bells, animals with moving heads and parts, mixed with lots of indoor galleries. Enjoy with kids out doors or indoor with questionable weather. Canyon Road is Santa Fe's Arts District. It's an amazing walk, filled with galleries, sculpture, quaint coffee shops, you name it. One can do a combination of art AND fitness, since it's a rigorous walk. There's El Zaguan, the home of Bandelier, who explored Anasazi culture&for whom the National Monument is named. Pachamama has imports, especially from South America. Canyon Road was where I had my first taste of Tibetan cuisine-the restaurant is gone, but apparently the Tibetan gallery is still around. One can enjoy coffee at Downtown Subscription. One can spend hours on Canyon Road, it's a magical place. Be sure to have the right footwear as well as hydration. It can get quite hot in the spring&summer. If you love the arts&being in Nature, this corner of the Rockies is the perfect destination. read more

Very cool, densely populated section of town with elbow to elbow, artists, galleries, and sculptures. Even if you're not a collector this is a must see stretch of road in Santa Fe. It's best to start at the lower end of the road - closest to Santa Fe - and work your way up the gentle slope. I would have liked to stop and walk the stretch, but time wasn't on our side, which my feet and wallet should have thanked me. This is truly another of Santa Fe's gems. read more

Returning to visit Santa Fe after 10+ years was an amazing experience that made me want to move back here, specifically in the Canyon Road area. Since we used to live in this neighborhood, we wanted to get really nostalgic and do a gallery walk. We used to walk this street daily when we lived in the neighborhood so we were excited to come back to see how much it's grown and changed. Canyon Road, rivals Paris and Manhattan when it comes to the art scene. As having traveled all over the world I find that Canyon Road has some of the most incredible assortment of galleries to visit where you can learn about Native American, contemporary and traditional art and of every medium. Depending on whether you're doing the walk during the winter time or doing the gallery walk in the beautiful summer time, make sure you get your footwear prepared. The walk up Canyon Road has a little uphill incline so you're better off wearing tennis shoes or footwear that will keep you comfy. Take note ladies, this isn't the gallery walk where you put on platform sandals or anything with a skinny heel. Wear comfy shoes or you'll end up getting your cute and trendy shoes dusty or worse case scenario you'll end up stumbling while walking up a cobblestone path. A couple things to prepare you before you do this walk, make sure you have bottled water with you, a hat on (if its summer time) and be cognizant that bathrooms are not readily available. There aren't restaurants until you're a little further up the street and kiosks and porta potties are a no no in this historical neighborhood. If you're a planner and want to go all out, what's really helpful is if you are able to grab a Canyon Road map at one of the tourist kiosks in the Santa Fe Plaza, that way you'll be able to map out the galleries you want to visit ahead of time. So what do you do on this gallery walk? You do primarily two things. First you can pop into any gallery that peaks your curiosity and chat up a storm with the locals or two you can take the most magnificent photos of the art that lines the secret gardens and pathways. With my hubby and I being an art lovers, we did both. Boy did we take a ton of beautiful photos. As a tourist you will have an incredibly stimulating time on Canyon Road (visually and intellectually), walking, chatting with tourists and artists and wandering from gallery to gallery. If you're an art lover there are so many galleries for you to choose from that it may take you most of the day. Most of the fun is meeting some of the artists that manage and operate the galleries. The experience of interacting with the locals is probably one of the best part of doing the tour. Make sure to spend some time with the friendly gallery hosts and emerging and established artists to learn about Santa Fe history, where the locals dine and to get a rundown on the art scene. And if you make it to the top of Canyon, cool off by having lunch at the Compound (one of my fave places to dine) and that just about makes for the perfect gallery stroll in one of the most beautiful places in the world. DO NOT MISS THIS! Canyon Road is a charming (lots of beautiful flowers and greenery) little street filled almost entirely with art galleries. I almost skipped it since I'd previously been to some art gallery districts and they were a bit redundant and stiff. Not at all the case here. The galleries are huge - with a large number of rooms exhibiting an incredibly diverse array of art from multiple artists. Some had sculpture gardens in the backyard that were just magical. All the curators were super friendly and engaging. If you are an art lover, you must come here. Make sure you go into as many galleries as possible, even if it looks unassuming from the outside. There are so many amazing things hidden inside! My mind was blown. You can take the free shuttle here - you need to take the Museum line. read more

What a magnificent street this is! It is custom made for browsing, shopping, looking around, enjoying art, dining and appreciation for all the good things in life that abound in lovely Santa Fe. With the Sangre de Cristo Mountains as a backdrop, Canyon Road is a half-mile street located in the Historic District of Santa Fe. It is touristy but a very SWANK touristy with over 100 Galleries, Art Studios, Jewelers, Boutiques & Restaurants. Adobe architecture gives Canyon Road its Old World charm and there are quaint houses and colorful gardens of flowers that line the way. Art is the primary ingredient, specifically Contemporary, Traditional, or Native American fine art I enjoyed a shuttle through Canyon Street and my favorite stop was the wind sculptures garden. I also admired the gorgeous groupings of hollyhocks along the road. Many of the doors here on houses are painted the color blue, as a long time traditional way to keep a domicile free from evil. Canyon Road is always festive, They like to celebrate the holidays accordingly. Hundreds of children, adults & pets dressed in their Halloween best, roam the area and collect candy & goody bags from Canyon Road businesses on Halloween. At Christmas, it is also magical and beautifully decorated. One of Santa Fe's most beloved holiday traditions--the Farolito Walk, lights up the Canyon Road each holiday season. The Canyon Road half-mile walk from Paseo de Peralta to Palace Avenue can also be enjoyed by shuttle bus. The free Santa Fe Pick-Up shuttle runs every 15 minutes. Catch it at stops marked "Pick It Up Here." Two are located on Canyon Road and one nearby, at Alameda and Paseo de Peralta.
