I've been traveling in my RV for two weeks and my shower went out so I looked for a local YMCA. I entered the facility and wow it was very modern with child care, a pool, and a big weight room. I signed up for the day had a quick workout with very modern high quality equipment and took a refreshing shower. It was only $16 what a great value. Highly recommend!! read more

I tried it last night, got my band, and can't wait to go back this morning! It's a total game-changer and I'm excited to make it part of my regular routine. No bueno. Last summer the upstairs with the weights, treadmills and cycles was super hot especially on sunny afternoons. The stated reason was a problem with AC and they had been waiting months for a part. This year it is no better and working out in the heat was miserable. The nice guy at the front desk said that the AC has been fixed. He claimed it was 78 degrees upstairs but it had to be mid 80s. He said it was even hot in the morning. I'm a senior and as I've gotten older it's hard to exercise safely in the heat. I wish the management could fix this issue. The facility is new and otherwise very functional and the staff is generally nice. read more

This place has nonexistent customer service, the front office staff is incompetent and rude. Instead of working to resolve our issues (created by them) they escalate with hostility and animosity. I heard the director gets paid several hundred thousand dollars a year, he should be fired. Stay away! read more

Nice and new, but it's hard to get a workout when young students monopolize the the workout equipment, . The staff that works in the workout out area are always on their phones texting or chatting with their friends, and not checking on things to make sure the clients are using the equipment correctly or if they need any assistance, we don't need a babysitter we need someone who cares for the customers well being. I will be canceling my membership. read more

The new Y building is amazing and the whole facility is great. It's true that since it opened a year ago, some wear-and-tear is visible (esp in the locker rooms), but overall it's a great place with really nice workout equipment and machines (I love how you can watch Netflix on the treadmill, etc!) and great programs, especially the childcare available while you work out (Kids' Club), which my daughter loves. The café and lounge are great, too--sometimes I just go there to grade papers while my daughter is at Kids' Club. Also the staff are really kind and committed to making it a great community for Gloucester (or Rockport, or wherever you're from). Our family goes to the Y many days a week for class or just exercise, and it's just full of friendly people--both staff and patrons. read more

Wonderful place for families and individuals to enjoy fitness and wellness for All ages

The atmosphere is non-inclusive and upscale. I was made to feel I did not fit in on my first visit. I won't be going back. But if you are into posh corporate attitudes you will probably love the place. read more

This YMCA is a great place to bring your kids. The splash pad is incredible. I wanted to take a minute to recognize the lifeguard on duty at the splash pad named Sean. He's very aware of all the children at all times and pays close attention to ensure everyone is using the splash pad safely !! read more

If you want to join a gym on a budget, this place is for you. Oh, you can't afford it? Sure you can: the cost to join is based on how much money you earn. I paid less than $30 a month when I joined and it was very much worth it. After I joined, I got a tour of the building. In addition to that, I also had someone teach me how to use the Nautilus machines properly. Because of that, I felt comfortable being there and didn't worry about looking like some idiot kid who didn't know what she was doing. If I had a choice, I would work out before 2pm, because it was less crowded and the highschool kids were still in school. There were only five or so treadmills and it could be a pain to try to get one if it was busy. The upside is that there's a sign-up sheet: you're limited to 30 minutes per cardio machine, so it gives everyone a chance to use what they want to use. I never bothered to use the pool, but it's there if you want to swim. Hours are limited, though. I meant to sign up for one of the free classes they have-- yoga or something-- but never did. I mostly spent my time on the treadmill, using the Nautilus machines, or in the basketball court. Even though I never fully took advantage of what a Y membership included, the monthly fee was worth it. Minus one star for street parking only (I suck at parallel parking, so this was always a struggle for me) and the annoying preteens/teens that were often around. read more

I love the updated equipment, the place is clean, the staff is super friendly and I cant say enough great things about the babysitting room staff! They have helped my daughter so much! Only downfall is the street parking and the limited fitness room space. I would love to see some TRX, arc trainers and barbells. The metered parking only allows you to stay for up to two hours :( read more

The people who work here are awesome. The facility is a wonderful place for this community. But let's be honest with ourselves, they don't clean the gym or the equipment to the level that for-profit gyms do. If there's dust building up on equipment, that means they aren't getting wiped down. In a gym, cleanliness should be a TOP priority. Great people. But management should reorganize their priorities. read more

Facility is okay but front office operations are a mess and management is poor. Too many issues with poorly trained staff, they are very rigid with rules that are unfavorable to the clients and inconsistently applied. They could use more professional management and a client-focused approach in order to improve services. I can't recommend this organization unfortunately, after numerous experiences which exposed lack of regard for visitor experience. I've only been a member for two months but plan to cancel my membership shortly. YMCA in Gloucester should really up their game. read more

Alright, I freaking love this place. The membership fee for a family put me off of joining for a few years, although I did take a swim class with my baby and just paid more. But then I realized that if you are low-income, you can get a pro-rated membership, and also to make it cheaper you can limit your membership to that YMCA only. So now it's about $56 a month, which is still expensive, but that's a family membership - it means I can take 6am workout classes before school, swim with my kids during open swim, they can go to free playdates and the gymnasium room is open during school vacations (YES!), and best of all, they babysit while I work out - this is a huge savior for me since my husband works overnights, it gets us all out of the house and I can even get a shower in without worrying my kids are destroying the house. OR, my husband and I can have a cheap date by playing basketball without having to stop to chase a crawling baby. The babysitting is a huge help for me - as a full time student, it was really hard to get "me" time, but I can watch TV while I work out! The individual TVs on the eliptical machines are awesome. Cable and everything. The staff is really great and I'm amazed they always remember me and my kids. And it's two blocks from my house, so I walk all the time. I was really on the fence about joining, but I'm so glad I did. read more

We had a child enrolled in the after school program who continued to be physically assaulted by another child. Read their handbook, there are no parental rights and they do not even follow their own procedures for giving children time away from volatile situations because they admit they are understaffed. This happened at the YMCA Rockport Program and other parents have complained. Do not send your kids there. When my husband exploded on staff because our son was hit AGAIN, they banned him from picking up or even communicating with the YMCA. It used to be a good program when Brian Flynn was around - not anymore. Tim Flaherty, Andrew Fontini and Amanda Tower run an awful program. If you think this is just a rant, call the Dept. of Early Education and Care and ask. They were cited on numerous noncompliance violations including understaffed for their licensing, no current CPR certifications for staff, numerous occasions where staff failed to report injuries to children and incident reports without parental signature, meaning parents may not have been notified if their child was involved in an incident. read more
