As I was going from Rehoboth Beach to New Castle I was wanting to take RT 9 north off the beaten path. As I was coming to the RT1/9 split I had traffic in front and behind and they seem to be in a hurry, Neil wasn't. So I pulled off the road at this place to let everyone by. As I came in thru the entrance the sign read "Free Museum" I says to myself "FREE" I need to check it out and glad I did... As I walked inside you have a really nice gift shop that you need to explore and support. The volunteers working were the best. Not sure where to start but as you enter the main area it is just loaded with WWII, Korean and Vietnam displays. Ever wonder how those belly and tail gunners worked, there is a display for that. I know I could not have done it. There is even a mock-up control tower to explore and listen to the base tower giving commands. On my visit I was able to see a C130 take off from the tower. If your ever in the area this is a must stop, especially if your a history buff. And at the end, please give these people a donation for a job well done. Peace.

You can walk in several planes, including a former Air Force 2, C130 Hercules, and C141 Starlifter. Soon they will have an A10 Warthog. The F101 and F106's were great to see, and will admit sensory overload. So many great planes, and also the former air traffic control tower were top notch. You'll want to go here. Incredible collection of old medical equipment, china dolls, old-fashioned ice cream scoops (10 cents/cone). Then, as we continued into the basement exhibits, the president of the museum's Board of Directors, Butch Hammond, guided us through the exhibits about integration at Milford High School, as he was one of the original seven in 1962 to have attended MHS, rather than taking a bus more than 20 miles away to Georgetown or to Dover. He was a track & field star as well as a star on the undefeated basketball team. There is also a fascinating collection of photos and programs from circuses of yesteryear, although they aren't well-labeled or dated. But fantastic to see the elephants parading down Main Street, with a circus performer in the trunk of one of the pachyderms (perhaps the 1930s). Free admission (but donations gratefully accepted in a jar on the main level). This museum is a true gem, and has something for everyone. They are preparing an exhibit about Milford residents who've served in wars. I noticed when lists of the fallen were published in the Washington Post circa 2005, that most hailed from small towns like Milford, rather than from big cities. I hope to return to this museum when I have out-of-town visitors to Rehoboth Beach (my nearby destination, about a 40 minute drive from Milford). Farmer's market on Saturday mornings until 1 pm just a few hundred yards from this museum.

Binoculars for bird watching on the 3rd floor look out tower which was really nice. The kid loved the turtles and chinchilla, and enjoyed playing in the play kitchen and walking the trail out back. We heard stories from Vietnam Veteran Peter, who was volunteering his time to give a tour and share his personal stories of the war. Thank you to Vietnam Vet, Tom Collins, for starting this museum and providing a place to learn, reflect, and pay respects. There is a chapel and memorial outside along with some military vehicles. Leashed dogs are allowed inside; due to the sensitive nature of the historical items, please use caution while walking through.

We saw the outdoor displays & got out to check them out. My kids were very intrigued by the POW depictions outside. The museum was open and we needed something to do on a rainy day, so we stopped inside. This museum operates by donations only, so you can view it for free, but definitely try and give a donation! This whole place is clearly a labor of love from the disabled Vietnam veteran and his wife who run it, and he was there when we visited and offered to answer any questions we might have. We spent a decent amount of time there and enjoyed looking at all of the exhibits, the children especially enjoyed seeing the booby traps & food rations. Definitely a hidden gem that you should check out while you are in the area. God bless our veterans!

This past weekend I attended my third Wildwood Beer Festival at Fox Park. We started coming in 2015…read moreand now look forward to the event every season. Bottom line: the organizers do a decent job with this event. With a few minimal tweaks, it could go from "OK" to great. The positives are easy. Unlike a lot of these beer/wine festivals, the event is never oversold. Are there crowds? sure. But with 40+ breweries offering 100+ samples, we've NEVER had to wait for a drink. There's a nice selection and cross section of breweries too. Brand new local craft shops like Oaklyn NJ's Tonewood set up next to national brands like Yeungling and Sam Adams. The more intimate local shops have knowledgeable brewers on hand to give some insight into the hot flavors of the summer. The non-beer vendors are great too. Want to take a break from sampling to grab a Nick's Roast Beef or sausage-and-peppers? You can. Smoke a cigar or play some lawn games? Available. So why has't the event taken off? Why have they cut down from three sessions to two sessions? A few irksome but easily fixed negatives: One is the live entertainment. In three years I have yet to see a halfway decent band. Occasionally I glance over at the stage, it's always the same story - a bunch of try-hard locals trying to fire up the two or three people watching their Sublime covers. Whatever the organizers are paying these guys is too much. You'd get the same/better effect with a DJ. Nobody is buying a ticket to the Beer Fest to stand and watch a band. Second is the logistics of the event. I buy a ticket for 12-4 or 6-10. I'd like to be able to enjoy the entire festival. The organizers won't open up the lines to get into the park until after 12. So realistically, even if you show up at 11:30, you won't be anywhere near the sampling tent until 12:15. On the back end, private security starts chasing people out at 3:45. That was odd - considering vendors were still pouring beers and the music was still playing. Overall it's a good event. A few minor attention-to-detail fixes and it could become the best craft beer fest at the Jersey Shore.
