When I went, there was mass going on and out of respect, I sat and stayed during the mass and took pictures after. From outside, it doesn't seem much (maybe Church of St. Basil in Moscow vibes) but the interior is stunning. It reminds me of churches in Portugal because of the colorful tile work but with cheesiness by adding the ceiling paintings like the "Creation of Adam" in the Sistine Chapel. There are small rooms worth checking out - they all look different. The church was founded in 1940. The design work, modernized Brazilian colonial style, began in 1942 until 1956. Antônio Paim Vieira, painter and ceramist, was in charge of the interior including the paintings on the ceiling. One part starry sky with Brazilians looking toward Virgin Mary and baby Jesus...and the weird copy of the Sistine Chapel ceiling paintings. Oddly enough, this church is meant to represent being Brazilian...despite the Russian and Italian influences. It's confusing.

The most dangerous place in São Paulo!…read more Within seconds of arriving we were attacked by street kids (who were about 12/13 years old). They attack as a pack and steal from everyone. They circle you in a group and punch/hit you to steal anything they can. Police are in the area but outnumbered and can't help. There are also homeless people everywhere. Read the reviews on google (there's a lot more than here on Yelp. Side note, I visited the cathedral by myself about 10 years ago with a big SLR camera and felt relatively safe. Now it's a a no-go zone. Very very dangerous. Stay away!!!

This was our first stop on the 2-week waterfall tour in Ilhabela and the reason for making this the…read morenumber one pitstop was due to the fact that we were rolling late into the afternoon (it was around 4pm) and this was said to be a short and easy hike with a decent payoff. True to what we'd read, this trio of waterfalls was easily accessible (located towards the southern part of the island) and offered a short drive uphill to the parking area (more like parking off to the side of the road). Considering the fact that there was a light drizzle, we were fairly alone on the trail and hit the first waterfall within 5 minutes of walking. This one was my favorite. You could hop rocks to reach a small (super small) island-like area where you could stand directly in front of where the water came crashing down. There, you could dip in for a light swim (very light considering that there wasn't a ton of swimmable area). The next waterfall we hiked up to would never exist without a barrier in the U.S. I nearly lost my dog to whatever drop it offered. I can imagine a few people slipping on the rocks and falling a handful of meters to their... death? broken elbow? We never did find out. The third waterfall was money and not as ominous as the second, but also not as favorite as the first. This short hike was a great appetizer in what was to become a behemoth of a 2-week waterfall meal.
