Grand Central Halls are very good compared to come of the halls of residence within the city…read more However, I would only recommend halls for your first year of Uni, then get a flat with people you know and you won't have to put up with everyone's noise and mess all the time (hopefully). I spent most of my first two years at Uni visiting mates in Grand Central. They are ideally located, fairly cheap and very secure in terms of who can wander in and out. There is a collective living area in the centre of the five high rise blocks that house all students, this is barely used but includes a couple of fruit machines and a big wide screen TV and a few couches. There are areas within the halls complex where you can sunbathe and have a few cans on a sunny day, but nowhere as nice as Abercrombie square and Falkner Square just 10 minutes walk away. I would recommend these halls over all the other city centre halls as it is a good place to meet people. There are often parties going on that get postered in the lifts of each block so it's an ideal place to cop off.

I'll go into detail but all in all: The Electra is not at all worth the exorbitant price. The staff: First and foremost, the staff is disappointing at best. They made it seem as though we would have on-site staff, and provided that for approximately the first two weeks, but since then there has been one person here for two hours per day on weekdays (12-1 and 4-5). These hours are ridiculous. I'm an international student and quickly learned the hard way I couldn't receive packages (parcels) as I was in school and the building has no way of collecting them. This became frustrating many times throughout the year as I prefer to buy most things online with student discounts (Amazon Student is a lifeline!). Another reason this is ridiculous is because, as they have to drive here from somewhere else, they charge £36 to unlock your door. Not to replace the key or something logical...to unlock the door. The doors here have no way of remaining unlocked. If I go to check the laundry and forget my key inside my room, it sets me back £36. Also, if you want to use a vacuum or iron from reception, it is only available during those two hours, five days a week. As a student, I'm generally at school in those hours. Not much time to vacuum the space. The amenities: There are two washers and dryers for all of the occupants in the building. It's not very realistic. It costs about £5 per load, and clothing is consistently still very wet. I understand the latter part is more to do with the laundry providers, but having only two dryers means consistently waiting for available space. Other: The rooms come with TVs, but not the license. The stoves were apparently illegal for some reason, and therefore they had to come replace them all this past month. There were a lot of little things like that which were inconvenient. I understand this was the first year The Electra was open, but Downing manages several other properties, which put me under the illusion they knew what they were doing. Compared to the accommodations many of my friends stayed at for much less, they had better experiences and felt they got what they paid for. I did not. The building I'm moving into this year with friends (as is the case with numerous other student accommodations around Liverpool) costs less for the same square footage, and also has a gym and cinema. The Electra markets itself to international students, and I've come to find that's likely due to the lack of value for the cost.

Me and my wife stayed at Victoria Hall Liverpool in July as we were touring the city. We rented out…read morethe whole flat so we didn't have to share the communal/kitchen facilities with other guests. The flats were great, very clean, well presented and comfortable. The staff were great and very helpful (especially when we didn't know our way around the city). There is a maintenance guy on site so if you have any problems he was always there to help. If we ever come to Liverpool again in the future we would stay at Victoria Hall Liverpool again.

If you have lived at the Halls or planning to, then it is fairly convenient to travel to and from because there is a University Halls bus operated by Arriva that provides a student service; this will only take about 15 minutes from Halls to University. Plus they run quite frequently to ensure you get to lecture on time! I have lived at Halls during a summer school once (just 4 days) and it was at the Carnatic. The room I was given was 007 (I will always remember that)! From what I remember, the single room was small and a bit dated looking with a basin and wardrobe for clothes. Quite basic really and a little noisy at night as you'll always get a rowdy student or two galavanting along the corridor. If I were to choose my accomodation, then I would probably pay a little more for my preferences as they do offer a wide range of different halls nearby. One advantage if you stay at halls, is that is catered for saving you that hassle of cooking but they do have self-catered if you prefer. The food you pay for is plain and simple but a bit better than School meals! On the site, there is a pleasant and quiet atmosphere plus a large lawn where you can lay and enjoy the sun. There are laundry facilities, cash points and Halls tutors on-site if you need them. Overall, most students tend to spend their first year at Halls which is all good and well as it gives you a chance to settle down and save on costs as well.

It's all rather basic in 60s style and some halls are in better nick than others but long live Morton D Block! From personal experience, I was on a floor of 12 and we had a small kitchen (catered halls) and 3 showers between us. We just had the basic room with no living area in our block but some like Salisbury had common rooms. Carni bar. Well, what can I say? I spent most of the year in here with my mates (no living room remember?) Must. Stay. Away. From. Bar! Oh what the heck, it's on campus... It's cheap and they have a DJ (Davey C) on a Friday, cheesy. They also televised all the footy matches. Anyway, as far as the food goes, the breakfast was good, and you could get a full English everyday if your heart so desired. And all evening meals were 3 course, (not saying they were great quality, mind!) We always looked forward to pizza night, let's put it that way! Expect queues though! They have their own health centre and laundrette and pool table etc. The green which was the centre to the surrounding halls was always packed in summer with people out 'revising' in the sun, playing footy, doing BBQs and generally larking about. Even though there was a bit of the Blitz spirit about it in comparison to the Greenbank Halls up the road (cue bus journey slating and rivalry) it was the cheapest (I think the prices have gone up a little since my time here around £105 per week now all inc.) and well, I loved every minute of it!
