I almost don't want to write a review because it seems like Joy is almost always booked up for being so good at what she does! She is so friendly and accommodating and I trust her judgement on what type of haircut would suit me. I will sometimes come in with some inspiration, but other than that, I let her take the reins and do whatever, so long as I am consulted about the length! Sometimes I like keeping my hair long, sometimes I'm just ready to chop it all off. I also really like how this studio is set up where she only works on one person - it's intimate but also comfortable. Joy is such a pleasure to go to when I need to get a fresh cut. I am trying to be better and get my hair cut more often, but she is such a treat that it almost feels wrong to come too often...but so long as I am in the area, I will ALWAYS go to Joy and will recommend her to anyone. read more

This was my first time here and I really wish I liked my cut. Joy was super nice and personable and I really wanted to love my hair leaving there. She put the fun curly waves in my hair at the end of the appointment so I didn't really get to see my cut with straight hair for a few days until I had washed and dried it. I had asked for LONG layers with my hair shorter in the front and tapering to a V in the back. I'm super disappointed in the layers. There are weird long pieces in the very front by my face with shorter pieces behind them? It doesn't taper into a V I'm the back at all. The top layer is super thick and like 5" shorter than the rest of my hair. Overall it's just very chunky and not what I was looking for. I've been wearing my hair in a bun for the past week and have been trying to look for a new place to fix it. read more

With this being said she was still extremely thorough with the entire balayage process despite clearly being held up way overtime (she worked on my hair until 9pm!) ! A month ago I got a "full balayage" at a salon in NC, and was essentially given messy highlights (the stylist either didn't know how to give a balayage or I was scammed). The result was a head full of different clashing colors, a harsh line on my roots, and a bunch of stripy highlights. A month later I decided to try to find a different stylist who could fix my hair. Joy is amazing! She has been taking care of my hair needs and wants since moving to the DM(V). Sometimes I'll come in wanting a certain look/style and she's upfront about whether or not the look will work for me. But she doesn't just say yes or no, she'll explain the reason why. She goes into detail, comparing my hair texture and movement with what's needed to maintain the look. I work as a nonprofit professional in D.C., I'm always needing to look polished. But I don't want to age myself with a mature haircut, I still have a few more years in me before I'm willing to consider myself a real adult, lol. I let her know what I'm feeling, what I have going on, and I let her do her thing. She is a true artist. Some days my hair is professional and slick, other days is messy and ready for a night out on the town. She's also great at recommending products. I tend to be a bit lazy and only invest 5-10 mins each day styling my hair. She recommended 3 different products for different reasons, some of which she doesn't even carry in her salon (she is very unbiased). I will say, I've been using these products since she recommended them for me and still love them. Once, she even picked up a paste for me cause she knew I was coming in and she wanted me to try it.
