I visited Capital Veterinary Specialists for the first time a few years ago when I thought my dog, Greta, had been attacked by an outdoor animal because she came running to the patio screen door and had a huge bald patch on her side. Thanks to the staff at Capital Veterinary, it was determined she just had a serious hot spot. After a week or so of wearing the cone of shame, receiving cleaning wipes, and some salve, Greta was cone-free and back to herself again. Most recently I had to take Greta in a few days after Christmas because she took ill and was puking all day. She is an elder dog but has never had issues such as these. We found out that day the issue we were told by another vet was most likely not a cyst on her kidney but a cancerous tumor instead. Additionally, Greta had a cancerous mass surrounding her heart. Once we determined we did not want Greta in pain and in this state (she was lethargic and could not even walk to the car to get to the doctor), Dr. Hwang was so comforting and offered my husband and me hugs. We were allowed to have as many friends and family members come and say goodbye to Greta, which made a painful process more bearable. A week or so after we had to put Greta to sleep, we received a beautiful card with all of the staff's signatures and Greta's nose and paw print. I will be forever grateful to Dr. Hwang and the staff that day when we had to say goodbye to our sweet girl just three months before she turned thirteen. read more

I brought my cat in to have his tummy stitched up. He had a previous surgery at University of Florida to repair some damage done by a pitbull attack. This was his last surgery and he was coming home to be a cat again! He was in their "care" for only 36 hours and they manged to kill him by giving him 3 doses of a medication I told at least THREE staff members that he was allergic to! When I asked to see him I was told "visiting hours" were very narrow. Hours before his death I arrived for a 5 minute visit, the only time in 36 hours I was allowed to see him. When I arrived, I noticed he was almost completely unresponsive, deeply drugged, and in great distress. I started asking questions and trying to figure out what had happened to a cat who was walking, drinking and eating just 36 hours earlier but was now completely limp, unable to use the litter box, vomiting, dehydrated and in great distress. He reached for my hand and squeezed my finger in his claw.That was my last contact with my big boy. Even after TELLING THAT tech that he was NOT to have that specific medication, she admitted he WAS being given it! I was told it was time to leave and I should not have left without him. 5 hours later, after the third dose of the meds he was allergic to WAS AGAIN administered, his big heart stopped. This place should be shut down. They are ignorant and untrained. I have never seen such nonchalance in dealing with people's pets. The more I have shared my story, the more others have told me they have had similar experiences. I don't know if these folks are even legally trained to do their jobs.... read more

Worst service from the Dr (to date never returned my calls) Receptionist was rude ! Felt like they were superior to all! We brought our dog to look at this growth on her leg. Found out it was cancer growth in her leg. ($750) Vet. Felt he could remove and have clear margins with Surgery. ($2,650) After surgery she had a cast like brace on her leg. She was back to normal playing with her toys barking at passing trucks outside. We went back 7 days after met with assistant who removed the entire bandage. I questioned this!!! Was told that's what we do!! Came home and she was not the same limping and then hoping on 3 legs. Took her back to vet and was told it was 14 days and I was only allowed 10 days! My response was what! She then proceeded to share the charges X-rays office visit all came to another $650.. at that point I asked to speak to Dr. Sorry not available.. I left without loosing my cool. Now, the dog hops around on 3 legs and barks at trucks but still does not play with her toys. Never got a call back! The vets and staff are exceptional. Even though our animals are all mixed breed rescues, they are treated as if they were expensive purebreds. They also treat us with respect and compassion. All concerned are clearly well-qualified and devoted to providing animals with best practices care that is provided in a gentle, caring manner. I feel sure that his care ensured that Reni had an extra year of happy life that he otherwise would not have had. He really cared and that means a great deal. Dr. Drygas is a kind and brilliant surgeon. He helped my tiny three pound 11 year old Maltese get a new and working knee after she tore her CCL. The staff is the most kind and caring people I have ever dealt with. I highly recommend this clinic. I would drive from Tampa to Tallahassee for Dr. Drygas and it was so worth it. My best friend has an animal rescue refuge in Freeport FL and she ONLY uses Dr. Drygas for any super difficult cases and I am so glad she told me about him. read more

I spent thousands of dollars at this clinic and thought it was a great, caring place prior to needing an internal specialist. Sofia Morales is neglectful and incompetent. She refuses to interact or communicate with the pet owner in anyway. My dogs diagnosis was essentially pinned to his collar and sent home. I had to google everything and figure it out myself. My dog needed an emergency ultrasound and they were able to squeeze me in last minute. Although I ended up going to another office due to traveling constraints, they were very informative and are very thorough in their communication with patients. Their technician reached out to me as soon as they got the referral from my local vets office before I even got the chance to call them. They were very understanding when I told them I was going to a different office since I'm not from the area & found a closer location. I have spent days on the phone with them & they never made me feel like a bother or rushed through the conversation. I could tell they truly care about their clients and giving quality care. Unfortunately, I had to spend $5,400 on shoulder surgery for my Labrador. Due to working with other vets, I need accurate records to ensure proper transitional care and 12 weeks of rehabilitation out of state. Under Florida law, accurate veterinary records are mandated by the Florida Administrative Board 61G18-18.002 on Maintenance of Medical Records. Each patient must have an individual medical record maintained by the veterinarian, which includes essential patient information. Clients are entitled to access these records. I requested these records more than eight times from both the doctor and the staff, but CVS did not provide the necessary records. Instead, CVS stated that my receipts and invoices served as sufficient documentation. I then discovered I had been terminated as a client, yet I still did not possess the correct veterinary records. "Unfortunately, per our legal counsel, anyone that threatens to file a claim or complaint against our doctors or hospital should be terminated as a client." - Becky Roller, Hospital Administrator, June 18, 2024. Sofia Morales had Been Gertrude's Vet for the past 2 plus years. We contacted Vet, Sofia Morales late July 2021, when she became ill again. We let her & her clinic know that we were on the way with Gertrude to see them. Keep in mind that we had PAID MORALES HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF $$$$ DOLLARS IN THE PAST 2 YEARS in her caring for our baby & we paid EVERY DIME! At her clinic, upon arriving & speaking to us, Morales put Gertrude in her hospital. While being inpatient, Morales ordered & performed initial tests & she adjusted her meds. Gertrude stabilized, HOWEVER, knowing that she was in a weakened condition & knowing that Gertrude needed HER care, NOT some Vet that didn't know Gertrude or know her frailty and her medical conditions, she instead, turned us over to her Criticalist because, as she said she was too busy for us to be involved in Gertrude's care. Something that we had done for the pat two years. Why was it different now? She didn't want to bother with us being involved. Yes, we were proactively involved in Gertrude's care and that is how we kept Gertrude alive. This time, she wasn't having it even though we had paid her HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS in the past and even now, with her new treatment and hospital stay taking place. Morales knew Gertrude needed her, and she instead, took our money and dumped our baby girl on her Criticalist. A person who did not know what they were doing and who used dirty medical instruments on our baby! While inpatient, and with the approval of Morals, the Criticalist scheduled AN ENDOSCOPY TO BE PERFORMED ON GERTRUDE USING A BIOPSY/SCOPE. HER ILLNESS GETS CRITICAL: At this point we had no other choice but to depended on Morales, her hospital and the Criticalist who she employed. We told Morales we wanted her involved in Gertrude's care, not the Criticalist! Upon Morales' recommendation, we agreed to allow her Criticalist to do the endoscopy of Gertrude's digestive tract, searching, for what? we are not sure (because they did not tell us) and they also did NOT tell us that their biopsy / scope instruments used, could carry bacteria & could kill an animal, especially an animal whose immune system was already compromised and was as unstable as Gertrude's. After the endoscopy was completed, we took Gertrude home. A day after taking Gertrude home, this endoscopy caused Gertrude to further lapse into a critical state, due to their endoscopy instruments and the procedure causing a SERIOUS INFECTION to enter into Gertrude's digestive system. We took a picture of the horrible discharge that excreted from Gertrude and we sent the picture to Morales and we BEGGED her to find out what had gone wrong and to fix it. It was AFTER this picture arrived with our texts and emails of major concern, that that @_!*@! Sofia Morales, who received the picture of Gertrude's insides basically on the floor, COMPLETELY STOPPED responding to us! She told my husband to deal with her Criticalist, the same Vet who didn't know our dog's medical condition, her illnesses and who had used DIRTY INSTRUMENTS and possibly a botched biopsy on our baby girl, which ended up killing her! HOW DARE HER! They were heartless, insensitive, incompetent & they ABSOLUTELY COMMITED MALPRACTICE! Vet, Sofia Morales & her Criticalist basically Killed our Gertrude! & now, Morales wanted NOTHING to do with speaking to us. We even took Gertrude back to her hospital & we begged her to fix what she HAD DONE TO HER, but they told us to let her die! She would not. This horrible uncaring piece of crap, killed our dog, shut off all communication & told us to let her die! WITH NO APOLOGIES OR SYMPATHY WHAT SO EVER & SHE CHARGED US THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS FOR THEIR INCOMPETANCY & FOR THIS HORRIBLE OPPORTUNITY! In fact Morales also REFUSED to help us get needed blood medication for Gertrude. We took Gertrude to another Vet for help & Barry Vet found the blood medication in her file. I wish radiation therapy was available here, perhaps in time they will have it. I am so grateful for this clinic being here and for the treatments and care that they offer. Unlike Allied, who stuck the dog in a tiny crate without a pillow and sent the dog home with a pressure sore that became a gaping bloody hole, and who never correctly identified and treated the dog's pancreatitis (yet charged us 3k and stopped responding to email when I showed them the bills we had to cover with our local vet for the wound)... CVS correctly identified and surgically corrected a blocked bile duct and the dog healed. Unfortunately the stay at allied delayed her treatment by weeks so she wasn't responsive to the non-invasive options tried at CVS. Pleased with their attentiveness and care. Yes surgery and two weeks at CVS was $6k, but they actually addressed her underlying condition and fortunately dog is improving. read more

I called 15 times in one week because my sick dog was acting strange. I finally got a call back from Dr. McArthur, who seemed completely uninterested. She just suggested upping the dosage of his medications. I did that but saw no change. I called again three times. No call back. I finally just brought my dog in to urgent care, but he died a few hours later. Avoid this place. They only care about taking your money. My poor baby died in agony because I couldn't get his vet to return my call. They apologized, saying that they just had "a really busy week." I was honestly shocked to read all of the bad reviews of this place. My dog recently had an ACL tear and a torn meniscus and my primary vet recommended me here. Every single individual that I dealt with from the time I drop my dog off to the time I picked her up post surgery I had nothing but a great experience. They were fast, very knowledgeable, and made sure I felt comfortable with everything before agreeing to do the surgery with them. My dog seems as happy as ever which shows me that they did a good job handling her. I had such a great experience I asked them if they did standard vet practices because I would've switched to make them my primary veterinarian immediately on the spot but unfortunately they don't. I was recommended to Capital Vet "Specialists" by a Vet that was covering for my regular vet. My 9 year old Pomeranian/Bishon has newly diagnosed Kidney disease and kidney stones and we needed to see the extent of the damage. I brought my dog into to see Dr. Morales. It was a drop off appointment. I later got a call from Dr. Morales explaining what her findings were and what she is recommending for her treatment plan. I went to pick up my baby and a tech came out and went over the instructions. I was given a bottle of meds and a paper prescription for meds and was told that I could "go to my local pharmacy to get this filled." Was also given a sheet of paper with the new food recommendations and was also told "you can purchase this at any local pet store." Meanwhile, I get hit with an almost $1200 bill!!!!! Now I'm new to Tallahassee but where I come from my Vet wouldn't do any kind of procedure on my dog without giving me an itemized statement first and ask if I agree to the services and price..THEN they would go ahead and do all the tests. Well not this place..no warning beforehand of what they would be doing and the cost. So, my first stop was the pet store to purchase the new canned food. Petco didn't carry it, so onto the next stop..PetSmart also didn't carry it and I spoke to the manager who told me that this food is a prescription food and it can't be bought over the counter. So my first call to Capital Vet was to ask how do I buy this food? Whoever I spoke to gave me an attitude and said, "well thats odd cause alot of our patients are able to, buy that food there." I assured her that I spoke to the manager and I couldn't buy it there..she basically did nothing to help me so I had to call my regular vets office and thankfully they carried it there and told me that I could either buy it from them or order it on Chewy.com with an prescription. So trip number 3 was to my Vets to pick up the canned food. The next stop was to drop off the RX to Walgreens which I did. I wait about 4 hours and don't hear back from Walgreens so I call them only to be told that "oh we can't fill this RX cause it's a specialty RX and can only be filled at a compounding pharmacy." Now my blood is boiling so my second call to Capital Vet is to ask about how am I supposed to get this important medication filled? Again the moron tells me that "oh we use a compounding pharmacy that is right around the corner from the office" and she gave me the number. So I ask the question, why didn't they give me this number to begin with especially since they are the "Specialists" and should know what they are prescribing. So now I have to shlep across town again to drop, this RX off at the pharmacy to be told "oh they refer people here all the time." They were extremely friendly and very professional. Meanwhile weeks later I receive a letter in the mail from Capital Vet that goes on to say how they strive to be professional and provide excellent care but they were "unable to further communicate with me due to my behavior" and were dropping my dog as a patient and canceled our upcoming follow up appointment. NEVER in my life have I ever experienced something like this before. They were the ones who didn't communicate effectively and this caused me to run all over town that day and delayed getting the medication that my dog needed. I find them COLD AND UNPROFESSIONAL AND DISGUSTING. What about a phone call to me asking what happened or getting my side of the story? You just dump patients? Isn't there 2 sides to every story? I honestly find this unethical and the fact that they conduct themselves this way disgusting. Who's the victim here? My little dog who needs special attention. Was I upset that day when I had to call them twice? Of course I was. Did I curse them out, threaten them or hang up on them? No I didn't and my dog and I didn't deserve this from them. I called the office manager and gave my side of the story and again got no apologies and she even had the nerve to say "well we can't control what a pharmacy will fill or what is available in the pet stores." I'm sorry but is not their business? Is this not what they do all day? If you order a special med for an 8lb dog, I'm pretty sure that would need to be handled by a specialty pharmacy so why didn't they give me that compounding pharmacy's number to begin with? I would highly recommend that no one take their fur babies to this joke of a practice. They obviously don't give a shit about our babies and are only in it for the money. Shame on you Dr. Morales and your uber sensitive staff. This place doesn't deserve pur money or a star for the rating. read more

Nice place. We drove 2 hours to get here because they have specialized machinery that we didn't have access to from the vet we saw in PCB. Scheduling over the phone was really easy. They asked where we were coming from and then made sure to point out the time difference. Very friendly staff. The location is easy to find and get to. It was very convenient for us. There were 2 things I really did not like. 1) The rooms they take you to for your appointment have terrible acoustics so it's VERY difficult to have a conversation in them, plus there's really no privacy since you can hear every part of the conversation in the rooms adjacent to you. 2) They don't examine your pet in front of you. They do the entire exam somewhere else. WHY? I personally want to see with my own eyeballs how the vet is handling my pet. I want to see the interaction to know how my dog responds and make the judgement for myself on how well the vet and my dog get along. That's important to me. However, my first impression of Capital is a great one and I would bring my pets back here if I lived in the area or I needed their specialized services again. read more

My dog left in a cardboard box. A dog that was cleared for surgery for a stress fracture with perfect lab results. The intern called the 3rd day telling me my dog was listless and showed hypothyroidism on her lab results causing her phosphorus toelevate. They had neglected to give her the thyroid medication I left there for 3 days and she became listless and crying out in pain from her parathyroid shutting down. They doped her up through an IV port to keep her quiet, shot her up 4 times a day with proton pump inhibitors which would have prevented her absorbing the levothyroxine. This then caused her phospherous to shoot up and instead of finding the cause, they start shooting phosperous through an IV port causing the calcium to leech out of her bones. They ran an IV causing anemia diluting her red blood cells to drop from 14hgb to 6hgb in 12 hours which also decreased oxygen to vital organs, increasing her lethargy. They ignored my pleas to have the surgeon or attending to call me regarding giving her a blood transfusion which caused her to go into cardiac arrest from the lack of oxygen caused by the IV induced anemia. The surgery was a success but the manager obviously has poor procedures in place that the thyroid medication I left there was not given and to leave interns alone for 3 days against rules for intern training according to he Board of Licenses in Florida. I encourage anyone that sees a doctor of any kind to get copies of all their lab results and medical intervention. My dog did not receive so much as a B12 shot for her anemia. They are highly efficient and competent here. My pup hit 9 years of age and out of nowhere started coughing and having breathing problems. Unfortunately it was heart failure but they are doing all that's possible to keep her stable and properly medicated to get a few more good years of life. read more

After they told me one price for surgery they added $450 and go add insult to injury they made me wait 40 minutes! To pick him up. When I got there they said there was only one dog ahead of me!! I spent over $3000 and the dc tech Angie was so rude to me. I just had major surgery & she's said "you're gonna have to lift him" he's only 50lbs... they made me wait an entire hr to pick up my dog. My dc institutions were take his bangdage off in an hour or he'll lose his leg and follow the instructions on the medication bottles. But yet she spent 40 minutes giving discharge instructions to the lady before me. After having surgery, being upset my dog had su, getting charged an extra thousand dollars and THIS tech is rude to me I will never be back- I'll go to Jacksonville if I have to.
