This hotel is an absolute gem. Very clean, staff was really really nice throughout my visit. Sure the rooms are somewhat outdated, but honestly, I could care less. The swimming pool was set at a perfect temperature. The morning coffee guy was super nice. More parking than you would know what to do with. I have found my new place to stay every time I come to Topeka. Plus, It's got a glass elevator!

I stayed here for two nights for a state conference. This was my first time visiting Topeka in several years and here is my experience: Location: This hotel is a few minutes from the state Capitol. It is conveniently located near a gas station and five minutes from Wal-Mart. Ghost confirmation/Check-in: I was skeptical about the check-in process because after booking the room late last month, we did not receive a confirmation email. It was strange and something I have not experienced before. We called prior to arriving to confirm our booking and the front desk clerk was not pleasant and he rushed my husband off the phone. The bar was in hell at this point. However, after arriving, Genevieve gave me hope. She was friendly, efficient, and knowledgeable about our stay. I was relieved to have an easy check-in that was no hassle. Bonus points for not waiting at all to get our room. Pricing: The total price for two nights was $250 plus a $50 incidental. This is for weeknight rates and I am sure it increases for the weekend. Room 301: Upon entering our room, I immediately checked the bedsheets and mattress. The mattress had questionable stains and bed bugs! The bed skirt was dirty, dusty, and was covered in random hairs from previous guests. We immediately alerted Genevieve, who was quick to get us into another room, thankfully with no questions asked. She reassured us that maintenance would be called to correct the situation. Thank goodness our next room was bed bug free. It was very dusty, especially on the bedside table and the headboard. I brought my own cleaning supplies and deep cleaned our room. It was surface level clean but it had not been deep cleaned in a long while. (The handprints and stains on the walls were proof of this for sure.) The bathroom sink had a crack in it and the water was slow to warm up. Once it was warm, it had excellent water pressure and was very hot. O for Old: While we appreciated the mini fridge, microwave, and the LG flat screen, the room and the furniture are more than twenty years out of date. The lobby and hotel bar are very nice and were the only amenities that have been recently updated in the last few years. (FYI-the bathrooms located near the lobby have stall doors with broken locks.) There is a pool and a hot tub, but we did not check these amenities out. The only thing that seemed newer in our room was the carpet. Also-the toilet was low to the ground and leaked around the base with each flush. Ghostkeepers: We did hear housekeeping running a vacuum for thirty minutes in the main corridors after seven this morning, but I did not see anyone going into any rooms to clean them. They definitely did not come to ours during the day. This may explain why our room was only surface level clean. Conference center: For an event space, it was just okay. I have definitely been to nicer conference centers. I wish the conference rooms were regulated better for temperature. The main conference room was frigid and the smaller break out rooms were saunas. Thankfully, the food provided for us was decent, minus the melon for fruit. As mentioned above, the bathroom stalls had broken locks. The staff were very accommodating and friendly and I appreciated how efficient they were. Overall: I cannot recommend anyone to stay here. The bed bugs alone were the ultimate nail in the coffin. Plus, the rooms have not been deep cleaned in such a long time. The upside was the free Wi-Fi, which was solid! The continental breakfast is $12 per person and there was plenty of parking. The water gets nice and hot but the pricing for how dated the rooms are is severely overpriced. Please save your money and heartache and stay somewhere else. And no matter where you go, check for bed bugs!

This was the second room I was in and the bathtub was disgusting.

Sad hotel which at one time was the nicest in Topeka. Had to wait 20 minutes to check in at 11pm as the were having trouble finding my fully paid reservation. First room I was given was not cleaned with unmade bed, no toilet paper, and just dirty. Had to go back downstairs to get a new room. No apology given, or offer of a free breakfast - just a new room key. The second room was "clean" but the tub was rusted and nasty. Overall hotel carpet was fraying and in sad shape overall. Never going back.

curtains that literally won't shut woke me up at 7am and kept me up

Avoid at all costs - came here via hotel tonight for a cheap room during a road trip - mistake!!! Hotel: Checkin is slow at a ghetto desk, kitchen closes early, the rooms are dated and smell. Room: my room had blinds that didn't close aka I couldn't sleep in past 7AM, this place is a joke.

    Curtains in our room.

I'll start with the positives, the staff was nice & helpful, however in a five night stay our room was never fully cleaned. I asked for new towels on day three, maybe that confused things. The photos of the rooms are deceiving with their fish eye lens. The doubles are full size beds, not queens, it was a snug fit for the hubs and I who are average size people. The a/c never worked properly, we had it on 60 and it was never even remotely that cool. The shower pressure was pretty good, but drain was super slow. The walls are paper thin. Since all the rooms open to the center of the open hotel, loud gatherings in the lobby bar could be heard well into the night. On several occasions, I could clearly make out a screaming conversation in the room next door. In general, the hotel was only so-so clean, common area bathrooms had broken doors, missing ceiling panels or no soap. The food was pretty good, the restaurant was only open for lunch, a $13 buffet. They catered our conference for breakfast and dinners, which were good. Again with the pictures... the picture of the pool area clearly shows a hot tub, which apparently has been filled in, disappointing. There is really nothing around, downtown is 5-10 minutes up the road and Walmart and other stores about 15 minutes away. Can't image I'll ever be back in Topeka, but if I were, I would probably pick a different place to lay my head.

This hotel are used to be pretty good but now it's really gone downhill. We had to remake our bed because they couldn't get the underlying mattress cover set properly inside of it so we had to rip our bed completely apart and put it back together again very frustrating. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone thus I give it a 2 star. Wall paper in the room is coming off the wall. Rugs in hallway are held together with black tape.

The living room was designed after a Tudor-era library, with lots of dark carved woodwork and stained-glass windows. The owner seems to be on a mission to save her block of this urban neighborhood in Topeka which is safe but has seen better days. As the rundown-but-beautiful houses on her block go on the market, she snaps them up, renovates them, and adds them to her little mini-village of bed-and-breakfast venues. She's a one-woman neighborhood rehabilitation program and has obviously made this her life's work, down to collecting decorative items to lovingly put her idiosyncratic touch on every square inch. Our room -- The Chester, named after the original owner of the mansion, Chester Woodward -- included a private full bath and a small gardenlike private rooftop deck with a hot tub. The room is cozy rather than spacious but very comfortable. Every night the owner brings out a homemade dessert (the night we were there it was a lemon-cheese ball to be spread on homemade sugar cookies the way you'd spread a savory cheese ball on crackers -- I'm so stealing this idea) and her morning breakfasts are lavish. She checked our convenience for breakfast and was clearly prepared to serve earlier or later depending on our needs. She was also happy to give us pointers on where to eat and what to see in Topeka. The Saturday night we were there she'd arranged for a couples' massage team to offer massages for guests. We didn't take advantage of it but other guests were. I would definitely stay here again if I were in Topeka overnight.

Guest Services: The nice American lady was obliged to help us. Very friendly and knowledgable of the area. Security: Dimly-lit parking lot at night. It's located on a highway with many retail shops, so it has the ability to be busy, I'm sure. Room: For approx $65, what do you really expect? There is a desk with an office chair as well as a small sofa. The decor is from the 1970s or 80s, probably when the place was constructed. Cable t.v., free wifi. Nothing really spectacular, but I could bring my labs inside--so I was content. Bathroom: Small & Cramped! The water pressure was ok. I've experienced worse. Breakfast: Nothing to write home about here. Waffles and muffins. Atkins BEWARE! You might want to stash a protein shake in your bag. Pet Policy: I think I paid $10 per pet, which tacked on an extra $20 for my tab. Overall, the place was clean, they had a bed, and it was quiet. Check in and check out was a breeze. There were a few other people staying here, but I never heard them. I would not stay here alone if I were traveling solo. I would consider lodging here again if we were in the area with my labs, but if I weren't trying to get them into a reasonable hotel, I would have chosen a different place to stay the night.

What they should have said was, "No problem, but just so you know, there will be an additional $60 charge to pick up after 10 am. Is that OK?" It wasn't okay. But they didn't communicate that. We would have picked him up before 10 of we knew that. Yes, we understand that there are costs associated with running a business. We run our own business.
