This place has a great Addams Family vibe -- very gothic-Victorian. There are several different…read morehouses on the same street which are part of the B&B, and we stayed in the main one, a 1920s Tudor-style mansion which was once one of the most valuable homes in Topeka. The living room was designed after a Tudor-era library, with lots of dark carved woodwork and stained-glass windows. The owner seems to be on a mission to save her block of this urban neighborhood in Topeka which is safe but has seen better days. As the rundown-but-beautiful houses on her block go on the market, she snaps them up, renovates them, and adds them to her little mini-village of bed-and-breakfast venues. She's a one-woman neighborhood rehabilitation program and has obviously made this her life's work, down to collecting decorative items to lovingly put her idiosyncratic touch on every square inch. Our room -- The Chester, named after the original owner of the mansion, Chester Woodward -- included a private full bath and a small gardenlike private rooftop deck with a hot tub. The room is cozy rather than spacious but very comfortable. Every night the owner brings out a homemade dessert (the night we were there it was a lemon-cheese ball to be spread on homemade sugar cookies the way you'd spread a savory cheese ball on crackers -- I'm so stealing this idea) and her morning breakfasts are lavish. She checked our convenience for breakfast and was clearly prepared to serve earlier or later depending on our needs. She was also happy to give us pointers on where to eat and what to see in Topeka. The Saturday night we were there she'd arranged for a couples' massage team to offer massages for guests. We didn't take advantage of it but other guests were. I would definitely stay here again if I were in Topeka overnight.

Great place wonderful inn keeper and it was all around a great stay. It's a little more pricey…read morethan most other places in Topeka but it is well worth it. Me and my wife will be returning.

My family and I moved in October 2011 and it was a decent place the only downside was the price…read more($670 a month for a 1 bedroom however there was $0 deposit & app fee). by January 2012 new management who dont know the first thing about running a business took over and sent everything to hell. they've since added a $300 deposit, $50 per person app fee, kept the $670 a month price tag. they also increased the price of the washers/dryers & soda machine recently. these price hikes wouldnt be that bad if the place wasnt a 3rd world country incognito. the new owners window-dressed the units or simply bought some cheap materials and paint to make the place appear nicer. theres a MAJOR roach and rat problem. the place never gets cleaned. trash and materials they ripped out when window-dressing the apartments is constantly sitting in the stairwells. there are 4 people on staff total - 2 managers 2 maintenance - the managers think their better than everyone (they actually said that to me its not an observation) making them complete assholes. they're there for maybe 2 hours a day 3 days a week total between the 2 so its very hard to catch them unless they show up to hassle you about the rent, which they do regularly and before its even due. the "maintenance" guys know little to nothing about fixing things which can be seen everywhere since the 4 staff members are the ones who did all the window-dressing and repairs and are usually never a help unless they're in the mood to take your rent payment. on the rent payment note - ALWAYS GET A RECEIPT AND ALWAYS MAKES SURE ITS CORRECT. the management struggles with their basic math ive gotten plenty for receipts with bad math (and made them redo them) but my favorite was the one that said $670 (owed) $400 (paid) $320 (remaining) and dont even think about getting even 1 day behind or you will receive an eviction notice on your door they've already kick out over half of the building. if you dont get the receipt i mentioned earlier the managers will swear it never happened and charge you for it again. in conclusion dont move in here if you dont want to live like a criminal and if you do just go to prison i imagine its about the same minus the constant fear of rape
