The atmosphere is very peaceful and quintessentially California. It's especially beautiful around sunset, when the light over the water and the colorful buildings make everything look even more magical. Definitely worth stopping by if you're visiting Capitola. It's an easy and relaxing way to enjoy the coast and the beautiful views!

Nestled right on the picturesque Capitola Beach, this 855 foot pier was sadly damaged in 2023 by…read moresevere storms, ripping off part of the pier deck and eventually partially collapsing the two businesses housed at the end of this pier, Wharf House Restaurant and Capitola Boat and Bait. Since then, the wharf has thankfully been restored at a cost of $8M, of which $425K was raised through local efforts. And although Wharf House has not re-opened, Capitola Boat and Bait has fortunately resumed operations at a new, temporary location on the pier. I have fond memories of renting a skiff at the bait shop and heading out with my friends to do some fishing. And am really glad to see the business survive such a disaster and re-open after an extended shutdown. Addition to skiff rentals, you can rent kayaks and fishing gear here and do some fishing either on the pier or on the water. The pier now also hosts various local events and live music. Offering fun activities to enjoy in addition to the beach itself. A must-visit if you find yourself in or driving by the small but beautiful town of Capitola.

Built in the 1930s by Kenneth Kitchen. It's inspired by romanticized Hindu mysticism as well as the arcane and occult. Because of this the site is covered in symbology and hidden meaning. From the obvious all seeing eye at the front gate to the mini details in the brick there is an esoteric design language that keeps it all unified and cohesive. The legend is also complemented by the fact that the owner and brothers were bricklayers and stone masons and it was only constructed under moon light. It was purchased in 2016 and lovingly restored and developed by the new owners to preserve the local folk-art style architecture. The new main house is next to the "court of mysteries" and a lot of the missing abalone and smashed brick has been painstakingly replaced.

The Court of Mysteries (which also goes by The Red Brick Castle, among other names) is a beautiful…read moremonument and home in Santa Cruz, which not many people know about. It has a very interesting history to it, and though you cannot go inside the house or on the property itself (because it is a private residence), you can still appreciate the architecture from out front, including a lovely fountain in the courtyard, and learn about the stories and mysteries that have defined this unique landmark. These stories can easily be found online, but some of the most interesting details are that the original builder (Kenneth Kitchen and his brother) built it only during the night, modeled it after a Hindu temple, and incorporated hidden messages throughout, using shapes, astrological symbols, and dashes and dots resembling morse code, with possible connection to the occult. Also, there is no historical record of Kenneth Kitchen after he left Santa Cruz in the 1950's, so yeah a lot of oddities to drive your imagination and make you wonder. One of the most intriguing parts of the Court of Mysteries is the "Gate of Prophesy" which has two magnificent towers and an intricately designed archway with the mysterious triangular structure at its center. Beautiful trees and vegetation surround the brick and abalone "temple" and entire site, creating a picturesque scene overall. Apparently the property was restored a few years ago by the previous owners (I'm pretty sure that rebuild didn't occur "only at night"). They even built a house on the left side to live in while reconstructing the Court of Mysteries. The property was subsequently sold in late 2021. If you're interested in a quick visit, it's easy to just park right on the street, take a few photos of the amazing archway and towers, and peek through the gate to see what the Court of Mysteries looks like today... and then maybe amuse yourself with the legend and history behind this strange phenomenon.

But I rather take down the Christmas on Super Bowl weekend than wait to take the lights down near the 4th of July. I went to this place on my first trip to Santa Cruz. And I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of this place, and its focus on Santa Cruz Culture. Thorough out my life, I have heard that Santa Cruz is known for crystals, and forest green. But on my trip here, I learned that Santa Cruz is also famous for surfer culture, As some of the pictures, demonstrate surf boards, like cups, hair styles, and volcanoes, come in a variety of lengths, shapes, colors and purpose. I also learned that surfing has its origins from Hawaii, and even though I did not know that, it totally makes sense. I will never be on a surf board, catching a big wave, while the breeze hits my face, and pelicans fly above, but by visiting this museum I learned the historical value of the surf movement that waved hello, initially, in Santa Cruz by way of Hawaii. My favorite room was that one that reflected the beach and ocean vibe of Santa Cruz in place. The room was colored in a deep blue that did not resemble clear waters, more like the deep blue that is found when the ocean seems to be infinite. I am not sure the exact shade of blue that the room was painted in, but I will call it calming serenity blue, which is a close cousin to royal blue. If popcorn yellow and burnt cocoa brown are colors than mine can be colored too, I do not need Crayola level authority to christen colors. The pictures in the room continued my trance into serenity. The paintings showed these peaceful seascapes, where sky and sea became partners in a waltz, not interwoven as one, but paired into slow movement that induces stillness upon the viewer. Other pictures showed a calm beach, where the shore water had white froth as it met the sand. In the background, there was a rock formation and behind the rock formation was a tranquil sky brighten by subtle hues of a descending sun. Even as I reviewed the pictures for this yelp, I found the paintings to be, in a phrase: rest in ocean and pastel candy colored strokes. The room also had a speaker that played the sounds of the ocean, quietly about a chair. I allowed myself to transport myself to a beach shore, to experience the colors of the sea breeze. The museum also tried to educate others on its place in USA farm produce history. One of the pictures discusses the migration pattern by stating, "Today Mexican men, women and children cross the border voluntarily- but at great risk of violence and rape." This is just my opinion, but this sentence, is too broad yet to specific at the same time to accurately paint a picture of the migration experience of many Mexicans and by extension other people who seek to come to America to fulfill their version of the American dream. The way it is written, again from my interpretation, implies that the choice to come to America is one that is a "voluntary" decision like skipping or going to the gym, or using a credit card for a jacket when it does not fit your means. Meaning, that the word voluntary may ignore the vast conditions that push others to migrate, other than personal choice. But this is just one Yelper's opinion, if that makes sense. In another, poster, which I clipped, explains how Santa Cruz goes alternative. The poster explains that "Santa Cruz became a cauldron of cultural experimentation, neighborhood activism, intellectual exploration and environmental protection in the 1960s and 1970s." I think that the word cauldron here is not the right choice because a cauldron most often then not, holds a witches brew. And, most witches brews that are mixed in a cauldron, are meant to produce a potion that results in some type of calamity or curse. I know I may be nitpicking, but if a museum is going to report history, they should be prepared for a response, as history should be reported with objective caution, not editorial perspective. A better word, again in my opinion, would be site, like Santa Cruz became a site of.... this gives objective reporting, as a posed to imagery that a word like cauldron produces. I think, and thus I write. Angela Davis, said, according to a poster, I also clipped, " I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change, I am changing the things I cannot accept." I also really enjoyed playing with Christmas train models for about 10 to 15 minutes. I was not transported into the Polar Express, but, it was fun to turn on cabooses and view their speed and stops through the tracks. It was a zen kind of moment. The museum also had a sculpture garden and a picture of a man in front of a giant redwood that made me want to find a giant tree and walk inside its tunnel. I guess, what I am trying to say is that this museum has a lot to see and ponder about. I was stirred, and calmed, by it.

You really get to learn about the history of Santa Cruz and the surrounding cities. It was three floors and wasn't a crazy big museum. I enjoyed it a lot and it was affordable to enjoy. Many computers available for kids to reserve and use for hour at a time. All in all, a pretty decent library for the community in Santa Cruz. It's an older library, and parts of it feels kind of grimy, but it's still a pretty decent one and a good resource for the local community. There are 2 entrances, the side one closest to the small parking lot (spots limited) might have some people loitering, so you may prefer the main entrance. Parking can be challenging, street parking available, but there's fees for those. Not too bad on the weekend afternoon when we came. Lots of seating and relatively quiet considering it was quite packed downstairs. Upstairs where the kids' section is located was a more cheerful and bright area with more natural light and colorful decor and furniture. The whole library is older so everything felt a bit 1970s-90s, but most parts were well maintained and kept clean. Towards the back of the 2nd floor there's a large community room where some kind of board game gathering was taking place during our visit, as well as some family-friendly bathrooms only for kids and their parents. The general public are directed to use the downstairs bathrooms which I passed by and peeked into and they looked kind of dirty and unkept (or very used by the afternoon). There's a campaign going on to raise funds to remodel or update this library, and I can see the need, hopefully, they will get there. The library staff are friendly and helpful. Plenty of computers throughout, on both floors although I noticed they were quite outdated older systems. Wifi was pretty good. Overall, an OK library in downtown Santa Cruz.

The mission church is absolutely breathtaking--built in the late 1700s, it's incredible to stand inside a structure that has been standing for centuries. We happen to live only about 20 minutes away, which makes this place even more meaningful to us. We come out here religiously, sometimes twice a week, and it has become our little hideout. It's where we go to slow down, walk the grounds, clear our heads, and reconnect--with history, with the surroundings, and with ourselves. Every visit feels grounding. The surrounding area is just as special as the park itself. The historic downtown has an old-fashioned charm that's hard to find these days. It almost feels like a quiet ghost town frozen in time--in the best possible way. The preserved buildings, wooden walkways, and relaxed pace make it feel like you've stepped into another era. There are also some great local restaurants nearby, perfect for grabbing a meal and making a full afternoon out of your visit. What makes San Juan Bautista so unique is that it doesn't feel overdeveloped or commercialized. It's authentic, peaceful, and full of character. Whether you're a history lover, architecture enthusiast, photographer, or just someone looking for a calm, beautiful place to escape for a bit, this spot delivers every time. Founded in 1797, this place is a true California treasure. We're incredibly lucky to have it so close to home, and it's somewhere we'll continue coming back to again and again.
