Ok. I'm not a Canadian but now that I've found this place I may become one. Everything was fantastic, service was excellent and Wonderful Wanda makes the best jam in the world. We had the lobster bisque, the Lobster Fondue, pountain, and chocolate cake. They were all Outstanding! For Me the best was the Lobster Fondue. It was out of this world. Which is interesting because they are only a few miles from where a UFO crashed in the 60's. read more

It's about the choices we make, and how they shape us into the people we become, the people we are remembered as. Captain Kat's story is personal and universal, one that can stay with you forever or leave you the instant you step out of the Lobster Shack. Captain Kat's also has food, and lots of it. On our trip to Nova Scotia, we heard that Barrington was the lobster capital of Canada, and the place to go to in Barrington was Captain Kat's Lobster Shack. Marketing ploy or not, we love lobster so had to go. And we loved it. I'll get this out of the way and say the prices are eye-popping expensive (not sure if that was always the case or because of the inflation we're experiencing now). But if you want to treat yourself, this was a really good meal - excellent 5-star quality food amidst an almost-kitschy diner decor. We got: - Catch of the Day: A 1.25 pound steamed lobster that had some of the freshest, juiciest, creamiest lobster meat I've ever had. I would have loved it even without all the melted butter it was bathed in. The side mashed potato was properly creamy and the side salad was outstanding (forgot what the dressing was, but it was uniquely tarty and cut well through all the butter). They winkingly refer to this as a "tourist favourite" on their menu to acknowledge how expensive it is. - Causeway Creamed Lobster: We passed on their lobster roll (which apparently was awarded winning) to get this. It's basically chunks of lobster on toast, swimming (yes, swimming!) in cream. I thought I'd hate it since I don't like soggy bread, but ended up really enjoying it. Again, amazing lobster meat. But it was the cream that made the dish - so creamy I actually thought it had cheese in it. Worth a try since apparently families in the south have guarded recipes on how they do this traditional dish. - Guinness Cake: Capped off the meal with an absolutely decadent chocolate cake. Super moist, lots of chocolate and whipped cream, but would have liked a stronger guinness taste. This is definitely one of those sinfully divine desserts. When we visited, Captain Kat's had a signboard upfront that said: "Whatever you're doing today, do it with the confidence of a 4-year old in a Batman t-shirt!" Sage advice indeed. Such a wonderful find... staff is super friendly and attentive... menu choices are fantastic... the food was amazing and the beer, iced cold. Lobster fondue, lobster chowder and fries poutine... all so delicious! And to top it off, Wonderful Wanda's home made jams are to die for. We drove all the way from Cape Breton to Barrington Passage because we couldn't miss the Lobster Capital of Canada during a roadtrip during lobster season. Captain Kat's Lobster Shack's variety of lobster dishes is well documented. The quality of the fresh lobster is unparalleled juicy and sweet. The lobster dinner for 1.25 lb lobster steamed after being picked from the tank is $85 and comes with mashed potato, melted butter and shack salad (mixed greens with cheese and 2 dressing choices of dill and raspberry base) was delicious but clearly priced for tourists or a restaurant needing to make up for many months of lost revenues due to the pandemic. The local favorite / South specialty is a must try - the creamed lobster is $47 - like a warm lobster roll but lobster chunks on a warmed open toast smothered with butter and cream. Upgraded $7 for the caesar salad with maple bacon as a side (instead of potato). The heavy sauce of the creamed lobster dish was also good for the mashed potatoes and complemented the steamwd lobster. Also had the homemade chocolate cake with cream cheese filling covered with chocolate caramel ganache and whipped cream - the best value for $7. (The kids menu looks like a good deal too - would encourage families to visit in groups). If we had more space in our tummies, we would have also ordered the award winning lobster roll. I would have given this place 5 stars for the food taste, quality and choices. 5 stars for the creative and thoughtfully done decor. 5 stars for the friendly and helpful service of Falon (daughter of one of the owners). 3 stars for the high menu prices. I struggled to give it 4 stars (but have to be balanced in reviewing). I found out after that this restaurant is run with so much love by the owners who named it in memory of the crew who perished during a fishing accident in 2013 (her son is Captain Kat). There is ample parking. Suggest you still make a reservation if visiting during the peak summer months. read more

Amazing food! Was blown away with this place. Staff was very friendly I wasn't sure what to get so I asked them to surprise me and they sure did. The presentation of the food was 5 star and the flavors of the sea food where Nova Scotian fresh. Place was in a small strip mall and decor was well built to make it feel like a nice comfortable restaurant you could feel at home in. So glade I stopped in. Chaotic and uncomfortable. The waitstaff seemed totally overwhelmed with how to handle a table reserved for a party in addition to a few other tables. There was a bit of a lack of attention to details including 2 mistakes with my order that weren't worth mentioning because it was hard to find the server. It wasn't terrible overall I just felt like we could have had a better meal elsewhere. The actual food itself was mediocre at best but again not the worst. I don't think I would return but it's probably worth it if others try for themselves. read more

Our family visited Capt. Kat Saturday evening. We arrived and it seemed fairly busy so we didn't complain when it took 40 minutes to receive even water for the table. (However frustrating.) Our waitress was very nice so we were trying to be understanding. We finally ordered our food and waited another 45 minutes for it to arrive. During this time we noticed the other side of the restaurant was almost completely empty now so we started wondering what was taking so long and why it was so hard to find our waitress? Parts of our order were missing but overall the food was very good. I was thirsty the entire time as our waters didn't get refilled at all through the entire meal. After an hour and a half we received our bills only to find out their debit machine wasn't working. We were then asked to go to an ATM and bring cash back to pay for our food. At this point (maybe I'm wrong) but maybe like a discount on the dessert or even an apology for making customers jump through hoops like this would have been much appreciated but nope, nothing of the sort. My parents really like this place so my wife and I were excited to try it but this wasn't a great experience. The lobster and the chocolate cake were delicious though. read more

This place is legit. All fellow lobster lovers need to come here ASAP! As a New Yorker, I don't get a lot of fresh lobster there. This is my first trip to Nova Scotia and so far, my lobster roll here was the best meal I've had in Nova Scotia. The restaurant has a very chill vibe. Very clean, staff is super friendly and nice. They're more than willing to accommodate you if you want to "tweak" things a bit. The food was fresh and delicious. We're making a note of this place and stopping back on our way back home to NYC. We ordered the cold lobster roll with fries, twice baked potato, lobster chowder (beyond amazing). There is a long wait but there seems to be a long wait everywhere we went so, it wasn't especially long with respect to context. This is a must go for sure. We loved our meal there. read more

Stopped at this restaurant for lunch with my family today, looking for the Nova Scotia lobster experience and was so disapointed! We were a party of 4 adults a toddler and a 6 year old. Luckly my daughter-in-law was smart enough to order the childrens' meals right away...after the adults orders were taken we waited over ONE HOUR for our lunch. The excuse, "There's a large party in the other part of the restaurant", well that's not our our problem. We should have been told that before we were offered a seat at their restaurant. That said, when my husband's sandwich finally showed up it was slightly burned, which was the icing on the cake for him, my lobster dish was like rubber and chewy, just awful. The other dishes were fine. I agree with the previous reviewer that no concern nor compensation was offered. That is no way to run a business. read more

Since Barrington is the lobster capital of Nova Scotia, you need to come here. It's funny how in a little shopping center so you don't expect much. This place is really cute though, they have all kinds of great photos, painted tables & other maritime mementos. The staff are friendly but as I have noticed in other places not always quick w/ things. The one thing is that when your order gets messed up you could at least take it off the bill or offer to buy dessert. read more
