We were starving after a long drive! We drove into town, pitch black outside and every place looked closed, except for a couple takeout pizza places and mini marts, and then we saw Luong's Restaurant. We decided to take our chances with Chinese food in this sleepy town. Luong's was still serving food until 10PM! The dining room looks very homey, wood walls painted red, green, and white, assorted Chinese decor, and red covered table seating, very X-mas like. The menu offers Chinese and Canadian cuisine (sandwiches & comfort foods), but we stuck to the Chinese food. I got a combo plate of chicken chow mein, sweet & sour shrimp, fried rice & and egg roll. Most of the food was decent, dishes made to order, except for the egg roll, which was the kind I'd buy at the surpermarket and filled with hot oil. Luong's Restaurant saved us from having to settle for Tim Horton's for dinner. The meal was decent, far from Vancouver quality Chinese food, but good enough for us after a long day. The service was good and the price was right, $22.30 before HST & tip for two Chinese combo dinners and two diet pops. We did go to Tim Horton's afterwards for coffee.

We arrived around 5:00 on a Saturday evening to an empty parking lot and dining room, and no other diners arrived during the hour we were there. I had the fried fish and clams special and the wife had the fish&chips. Both served with french fries and coleslaw. The fish and clams were fresh, though I wasn't impressed with the batter. The fries were of the generic, frozen variety, dry and uninteresting. The coleslaw was a ludicrously small thimble-sized portion but was ok, with a slightly tangy, mustardy dressing. They serve beer and wine here only, no cocktails. But beer and wine lovers alike would be disappointed. We both wanted red. The waitress didn't know what kind it was and offered to check. We saved her the trouble and said whatever they have would be fine. It turned out there wasn't enough for two portions so she split what was left into two glasses. The wife decided to have a white instead so we combined the two reds into a glass for me and the white turned out to be a pinot grigio, her new favorite. My red, not so good. The bottle had clearly been opened too long. I guess not many wine drinkers here. For beer, only big-name brands, both Canadian and, surprisingly at this time in Canada, American. No small craft brands whatsoever. The ambience was typical diner, no complaints there. The best part was dessert, which we hadn't even planned to get. At the end of the meal two were brought over, without asking and at no charge. Since they were going to be closed for the next 3 days I guess they didn't want to waste them. A peanut butter cheesecake and a chocolate cream pie, the latter which was enormous, almost two portions. Both surprisingly delicious. We only tried the pie while there, taking the cheesecake home, and thanked her and complimented her on the quality. They were both made in house by the chef. The cheesecake, which I enjoyed over the next two days, was so good I've resolved to try this more often, not being something I normally order. So, an enjoyable experience overall but I'd probably research other options if I find myself back in Yarmouth.

The lobster came as a full ramekin, worth the cost of the add on. If I had to say one negative thing about any of our meals or desserts: my wife's Cobb Salad could have had more lettuce in it...but there was plenty of the other ingredients to keep it a very good salad. I had the Chicken Souvlaki ($18.99). It came with white rice, pita bread, salad, and tzatziki. The chicken was so dry and tough. It tasted like it was reheated multiple times over. I was so disappointed. At least it was lean breast meat and not fatty nor gristley. Dipping it in the tzatziki did help. The tzatziki was creamy and quite good. The rice, like the chicken, was also dry, and it had clumpy bits. It was also just plain white rice. I was expecting a pilaf. The salad was great though. It was a real spring mix of greens, cucumbers, tomatoes and feta cheese. Vegetables were fresh. The only thing is I asked for the dressing on the side and the salad came already dressed. It had a bit too much dressing for my liking, but wasn't too excessive. I noticed that my husband's uncle, the host of our dinner, also ordered the Chicken Souvlaki, and his plate had the salad dressing on the side (he did not request the dressing on the side). I think the server gave him my plate, and gave me his plate. He had already started eating, and the dressing on my salad wasn't excessive, plus I didn't want to have to wait for them to remake the salad, so I didn't say anything and just ate the plate that was given to me. Others who had the homemade cheesecake with blueberry sauce loved it and one person even said it was one of the best cheesecakes he's ever had. We were a large group of 13 and our server did a great job (with the exception of swapping the "dressing on the side" Chicken Souvlaki and the "pre-dressed salad" Chicken Souvlaki). He was super friendly and welcoming. He handled our group on his own, so I can forgive the mistake. The restaurant has a bowling alley in it, as well as slot machines. They also had dart boards. It's the kind of bar/pub I would expect in a small town. There is free parking in their lot, but you can also park down by the Tourist Bureau for free, which is what we did. It's a short walk from there. There are not too many dining options in Liverpool, NS, and my husband's uncle picked this place because they could accommodate our large group and would be able to serve us all rather quickly. I wasn't thrilled with my main course, but it seems like the kitchen is usually better, or so I've been told. I might have caught them on a bad night, or they aren't used to large groups. So I guess your mileage may vary.

One of the group had plans and had to leave without eating and the child was getting agitated because he was hungry. We waited about an hour for our meal. Our waitress was great but we were not not happy with waiting that long. Our meals came out in two different batches and we were told that a big takeout order got put in the middle of our orders. I am not sure why people in the restaurant are not the focus but that take outs are dealt with first. I contacted the restaurant and they emailed me to get the check number and said they wanted to discuss a few things with me and I gave them my number but never heard from them.
