Well check out the mascot for this store. He doesn't look too dissimilar to Jabber Jaws. Anyway, with that out of the way, how is this chicken shop? Well it's not bad. It's a friendly little place with some lovely staff. The lack of decent salad selection was a bit disappointing for me, but then again we all have different tastes. Maybe you won't have a problem with what's there. That is however the only gripe I have. The prices are pretty decent and the range is what you'd expect from a chicken shop. While there's nothing to really set it apart from the competition, I actually really like this place. I'm struggling to think why though... Maybe it's Jabber Jaws, maybe it's the friendly staff, who's to say. Maybe it's a combination. Regardless it's a place I recommend. It's not a bad little chicken shop.

It's like stepping into a time warp back to the 80s, the wall is covered in those Chinese drawings your grandma used to have in her house and everything is burgundy coloured from chairs to tablecloth and carpet. I am the master of a good buffet but I was totally off my game here - getting too excited and filling up on bread, noodles and prawn crackers. My tip? Skip the banquet option and go straight for the buffet cabinet of meats and veg. Pick your meats (pork, chicken, lamb, beef) and then pile the veg on high. The most exciting part of the entire process comes next...the MYO Mongolian BBQ sauce station. I'm someone who manages to screw up making a simple balsamic dressing for a salad so I was slightly petrified when presented with 8 bowls of sauce to pour over my bowl of uncooked meat and veg. Don't worry though even Jessica Simpson couldn't screw this one up. Just go gung-ho on the garlic, ginger, cooking wine and soy sauce. But a word of warning...the chili sauce has a sliding scale of anything less than 1 spoon is pathetically mild and anything more than 1 spoon is ridiculously hot. Some little cutie in a chefs outfit stands behind a giant hotplate the entire night waiting for you to bring a bowl of raw meat and veg and then he cooks it up for you with giant chopsticks. They killed wild animals for food, and the meat was shaved and stored in their packs. The shields were upturned and used as a hotplate to cook the meals... Reading this while waiting for the first round of drinks to come out is almost as entertaining as watching your meal prepared in front of you. I advise everyone to do the banquet round, as you make a selection of meat, vegetables and marinate, and the bonus is you can go up as many times as you want. You can get chicken, chips, chicken hot packs, chicken rolls, you know where I'm going with this. Like every chicken shop they offer their own takes on these classic favourites, and it's always worth visiting any chicken shop once just to see their interpretation of these menu items. The reason I like to visit is for the salads! Almost every chicken shop makes their own salads, or at least, some of the salads. Select Chicken is no different. It's the quality of the salads that makes all the difference. I'm done with coleslaw and potato salad variations. What I enjoy here is the kabana salad which is primarily kabana, capsicum, and onion. Or maybe it's the rice salad, or one of the other continental salads on display. Even if you don't want chicken or chips, go for the salads. They're a good healthy option and they're reasonably priced too!!

Funky chicken serves up good birds but our 7:30pm visit here meant we caught one that was a bit dry. The chips are heavenly golden and big cut, as was previously mentioned. The salads are the winner here with beetroot and fetta, pumpkin and spinach, tabouli, greek and plenty more to choose from - again though get in early to get the pick of the crop and not left overs. Service was super quick and friendly and the price was good for a chicken shop. Overall, not the holy grail but definitely a contender should some of my other regulars be out on one of my fat wreck Friday type days.

One that I have already reviewed is the best, being Chicken Chef on Main North Road, however Funky Chicken on Duth Street isn't too far behind. The food is always pretty good quality and has just the right amount of spice. I particularly like the spring rolls - they serve it with a Nuoc Cham that's completely addictive. I always order duck in some variety too - they always do it really well, not fatty but tender. The only thing I will say that the serving sizes aren't huge, so order more than you think you'll need. Practical stuff: Chu's delivers to the Unley-area suburbs, and usually takes about 30-45 mins. Average price pp: $25.
