Excellent comic book shop in the Charleston area. Had time to kill waiting for a flight and happened upon this spot. Nice selection of trade paperbacks and a decent selection of action figures (lots of vintage stuff) and tons of Pops. Also had a lot of back issues. Fairly large space as far as comic book shops go, so was really fun to explore. The real highlight was the gentleman at the register. Can't recall his name (he recommended a nearby convention hosted by the store that I checked out and was really cool), but he was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful - let me know about an issue that came out that I hadn't been aware of based on my purchases. I go here every few months or so and every time I come it is always a good experience. The workers are really chill and helpful, the comics are decently priced, and if you know what your looking for then it is very easy to navigate around the store. The only critique I have is that they sell bags with around 4-5 loose figures for 30-40 dollars, which is absolutely insane for the condition and quality the figures are in. read more

On Februray 16, 2019 at approximately 1510 hours I, Dante G., responded to Captain's Comics & Toys located at 1209D Sam Rittenberg Boulevard, which is in the jurisdiction of the city of Charleston, county of Charleston, and state of South Carolina, in reference to found property. Upon arrival, I approached the business located in the first third if the strip mall. I entered through the single door located at the A-B corner of the business. The business had several, unknown males behind the counter, yet none acknowledged our entrance. I then rooted around in a few bargain bins and looked in the cases, scant feet away from the employees. No offers to show anything or answer questions. I continued to look at stagnant shelves of toys, set there but not displayed. No eye appeal. I attempted to locate some old issues of series that I enjoy, but was met with negative results. I tried to find a new series I wanted to try out, but found that, if it isn't mainstream, it ain't at Captain's. I continued to watch as the employees and a few clique customers chatted. I know I could have asked for help, had I needed it. It's nice to just be acknowledged occasionally. And this isn't my first visit. Or my tenth. Or my fiftieth. Rarely do they make anyone but "their" customers feel welcome. This is why I don't mind paying shipping for another comic shop to keep my books and send them to me. I know, too, that Captain's has been voted "Best Comic Shop in Charleston" or something similar. But when you are the ONLY shop, it isn't hard to be "best". And it would be different if I were face in the crowd kind of guy. I'm not. I have a distinct style that is rarely repeated. People who have not seen me in twenty years recognize me and speak. I'm not saying I want to be gushed over, but a "Welcome, if you need anything" to a guy that stops regularly would be nice. End of Report. read more

Took my kids here to buy comics after moving from a really good comic-culture in the Pacific Northwest and was blown away. There is a wide selection of indie books and traditional books and shelves of collections and trade paperbacks. The kids section is super small but has some quality books. The staff are helpful, knowledgeable and very open. Sorting through the Marvel Universe can be daunting, especially if you're trying to find a good read for a young reader. One guy at the store has helped us twice and both times he dialed in on exactly what we needed within minutes with two excellent recommendations. Definitely a great place to start a subscription and get to know the staff on a weekly basis when you pick up your books. They have lots of Pops and an assortment of LEGO figures and other collectables. But this is a comic store through and through. Absolutely worthy of a full 5 stars! A lot of hobby, niche, or collectible shops can feel cliquey or unfriendly. Not here!!! They are genuinely kind and extremely informative on any info you could want. I have found that the comic hobby can be super overwhelming, even for someone that follows it. I was able to ask questions about my favorite story lines and find out which books I should search for without feeling any of the gatekeeping or rudeness I've felt at other shops. We moved here back in January and needed a comic book shop to receive our books. We are serious collectors. Have over 10,000 between us. We checked this place out. Nice to see they charge subscription fee. I feel more places should actually. Decent selection. Some of the guys here are nice enough. They will say hi when you walk in's The owner is not the most social guy and it's hard to talk comics or carry conversation with him or anyone here. Makes me wonder if they read them. They just don't care about that social aspect of the business. We ended up starting our subscription box at Soundwave because of the friendly atmosphere even though they don't have near as much a selection. The owner there is always around and will carry a conversation when you ask a question. If you're looking for a back issue Captain's is a good spot to look at times. Heavy on the toys and pops too. Just don't expect a nice chat and a very snooty owner. read more

It has been four years since my last review of Captain Comics, and so I wanted to write an update following my latest visit. I went in yesterday with my 13 year old cousin, who is a huge comic book reader, superhero fan, and artist in the making. Her favorite superhero right now is Spider-man, but she's been really in to Spider-Gwen recently, who I knew very little about. We found several Spider-Gwen comics in the store, and the guy behind the counter (blue hair) was super cool in explaining to my cousin the variations between the different Spider-Gwen series and where to start with her collection. I ended up walking out with two compilation books (#0 & #1) for her to start her off on the right path. With great cousins comes great reading opportunities. Overall, the store keeps getting better and better. Huge Funko collection in the back, plenty of DC and Marvel comics, Indie comics, action figures, graphic novels, and statues of all shapes and sizes. Best location in the region by far. Can't wait for their next Expo so I can get my comic on :-) read more

What a great comic shop! Came here with my young daughter, and they were relaxed, and very courteous to both of us. This shop really has a lot in it from toys, collectibles, loads of funko pops, old school and new everyday comics for cheap, but also high end rated comics and graphic novels. Solid shop! 5 out of 5 stars. Being from CT and to find a shop like this was awesome. The staff was really friendly and Helpful. I'll be honest I thought the prices we great....a few bucks below the full value. Plus I found there bundle packs to be amazing. Being that I'm from out of state the guys even offered for me to give them a list of items and they would be willing to ship if they had the items. I highly recommend. I rarely go to any LCS (not that there are many to choose from in Chas anyway) but I've randomly stopped in Cap's a few times over the years going back to when Lou still owned the store. Of the new crew there is the cliqueish sensibility mentioned by another reviewer, where if they don't know you, they won't even acknowledge your presence. That's okay because I don't really need a chummy rapport, but they give off the sense that you're intruding in their personal enclave. Nevertheless, the biggest complaint is more pragmatic: I don't follow modern comics, and thus I'm mostly interested in back issues. But their back issues have always been wildly overpriced. Even 5 years ago before the market exploded, I'd see very average Bronze Age comics (not keys, not even hot titles) like a Marvel Two-in-One or Team-up in mid-grade for $30. I know they have overhead, and have to pay the staff and keep the lights on, but when you can get the same book for $3 on Ebay, guess what? I suppose they are fine for fans who only buy new comics (and figures) and who they see on a weekly basis, but for anyone else they sadly don't have much to offer in terms of a good brick and mortar store experience. read more

This place is a great stop for anyone even mildly interested in comics. There is quite a selection contained in this small shop. I've been wanting to stop in here for over a month and was not disappointed when I finally did. The store is clean and extremely organized. The staff is very knowledgeable of their products. This place isn't too badly stocked and carries a good array of back issues and books. As toys go, I was a bit let down by the Transformers selection. The G1s were seriously overpriced (you can get the same items in same or better condition on Ebay for a third of Captains' asking price). Collectors should skip this joint, although you might find more recently-released items for a deal here. read more

Captian's Comics has a little of everything for any person that is intrested in comic books, comic related toys and collectables, and comic supplies. They have a large selection of back issues that are in good shape and a decent price. They also have a large collection of current and recent comic issues from DC, Marvel, IDW, Dynamite, and other Indies series comics. If they don't have what you are looking for just talk to any of their friendly staff and they will be able to help you in trying to order it through there distributor or make note of it in case they come across it in the future. I was in Charleston for some training and was searching for a nearby comic shop. It turned out that this was one of only a few in the area and I noticed to great reviews. I took a trip down there and was quite pleased with what I found. An absolute ton of back issues from silver age(my favorite) to modern issues. A fantastic selection of toys and statues as well. Everything was well organized and easy to search through. There was one clerk in the store who was very friendly and helpful. The storefront was easy to find right off the main road. Now, my only complaint was the pricing on everything. I buy and sell a lot of comics and have seen the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to comic book shops. I found the prices to be very much on the high end for books I find elsewhere for about 25%to 30% cheaper. I am a bit of a scoundrel when it comes to paying full price, admittedly.I will say the selection is fantastic. If you take into account it was really the only thing in town , I can see why they may charge what they do. If they have occasional sales that would be great. I will go back and buy some more books before I leave town. Over all well worth the visit. read more

I don't go to comic book stores often but I had some time to kill on vacation and decided to stop by. This is one of the best comic shops I have ever been to. It is very clean and organized with plenty of back issues organized by character, author, and story. They also have many story collections that I have found hard to find at other book stores. I'm not a big action figure person, but if that's your thing they have plenty of them. I pick up Pop figures every once in a while and they had a large selection. The staff were very friendly and helpful to me while I was there as well. If you like comics or comic-related items I highly recommend this shop. read more

The first time I went to this store I was looking for a particular comic that I was missing from my collection. I messaged the store and asked if they had the comic in question and that I would be there to purchase it in 20 mins. When I arrived the staff completely ignored me to have conversations with the "regulars" of the store. I stood there waiting to be acknowledged and when someone finally spoke to me they didn't offer to help me they gave me the comic and tried to rush me out of the store. They didn't tell me about any new titles or make any attempts to make me feel welcome in their store. I ended up wandering through the store not knowing where anything was and deciding to purchase other comics that I hadn't picked up before. When I left the staff were still unwelcoming and could care less that if i had questions about anything and rushed me out of the store. It was two hours before the posted hours of when the store was going to be closing for the day. I will attend their Expo as it is one of few nerdy events in the area but I will never give their actual store business. This happened 2 years ago when I was just getting back into reading and collecting comics and I remember everything vividly as it was such AWFUL customer service. read more
