This family-style restaurant is easily one of the best dining experiences I've ever had. The experience starts the moment you walk in. On the way to your table, you stop by the wine wall and choose what you'd like to drink. There's no traditional menu and only a limited selection of dishes, but that's part of what makes this place so special. Everything is focused on what's fresh and available that day. We were a group of 10, which worked perfectly because we were able to order and share practically everything they had. We had **fresh-caught fried swordfish with potatoes**, beautifully crisp on the outside while remaining tender and delicate inside. The **grilled octopus with vegetables** was another standout--simple, fresh, and cooked exactly right. We also tried the **fresh tuna**, a **ribeye with French fries and a fried egg on top**, and **duck with potatoes**. Every dish felt comforting and unpretentious, but the quality of the ingredients really spoke for itself. And after all that food, we finished with coffee--exactly the way you should end a long, leisurely Portuguese meal. What I loved most was that this didn't feel like a restaurant trying to impress you. It felt like being welcomed into someone's home and being fed incredibly well. No unnecessary frills, no complicated menu--just great ingredients, generous portions, family-style hospitality, and food made with care. Taberna Roberto deserves every bit of recognition it gets. The seafood soup/chowder/bisque bread bowl is a MUST, as it is foolishly cheap for what can be a whole meal for a person. Bread is baked fresh that day, in house. The fish can be done a few different ways, but best split and grilled (per our server's suggestion). There will be butter, there will be herbs, there will BE GARLIC!!! It's basically heaven from the wood or charcoal fired grills delivered straight to your table... after you have finished your soup/chowder and lampas of course (think mussels meet escargot). Reservations are almost a must here, as the locals love it as much as tourists do and even in the off-season we almost go turned away because we hadn't made a reservation. Buuuuuuuut, the staff and owner were sympathetic (we had just arrived and probably looked in rare form) so they sat us and we loved every bite of everything we got. Let the server guide you, once they know what you like they will put together an unforgettable meal for you. I wish we had been there when not raining and during the day so we could see the ocean and the open doors/windows of the patio and beyond. I dream of Beira still to this day... months later... as there are very few places like this in the states, which is just a damn shame tbh.
