White fish with the chimichurri-like sauce
Aleksei M.

Super fun - especially when we went and there was a three-person band playing live music in Spanish and Portuguese that night! I lived in Portugal for a few months, and I can attest that the food here is authentic. My mates and I drove from Hannover on a Sunday to visit Neuengamme and see some of Hamburg. I found only a few places that were open on Sundays, but since this one was open and I liked the seafood back in Portugal, I chose this place for us. The menu is fixed and guests could choose seafood or surf-and-turf. These came in 3-course or 4-course varieties. We chose two of the seafood 4-course meal and one of the surf-and-turf 4-course. The appetizer was prawns brought out in a flaming pan - cooked just right and served with bread and olives. Next was a white fish cutlet with vegetables and a sauce that looked like chimichurri, but tasted a little different. Between the courses, the server invited us back to the bar where we could look through their selection of spirits. We could choose one drink - on the house! We found a Portuguese almond liquor and took three. We returned to our table where the next course was three different kinds of fish prepared three different ways plus scallops (or if you ordered surf-and-turf, a piece of rabbit). I ordered the seafood and my favorite was the seared piece of tuna. Both the seafood and the rabbit were served with vegetables and potatoes. We took a little break during this course to be serenaded by the band going from table to table. They played well and the passion for their music made dinner that night all the better! Dessert was a chocolate cake with fresh fruit and a bottle of honey rum that the server set on the table and said we could drink as much as we liked. Being this generous with liquor and portion sizes means this was not a cheap meal, but it is well worth the price! Oh, and when we left, the house gave us a free bottle of red wine to-go! Needless to say, if I ever return to Hamburg, I will be back here.

Starter! Flaming prawn!

Love the atmosphere in the restaurant! Lovely guitar singer and lovely food!! The owner is very friendly and I have received a lovely rose when we finished our dinner which has last 3 hours! And my husband has got a bottle of rot wein from the owner! How can someone not fall in love with this place...^^

This little restaurant which focuses on fish is really popular among locals and travelers alike…read more Came here today at the advice of my airbnb host, who described the restaurant as a typical Hamburg style seafood restaurant. Got there around 7pm on a Monday and it was really packed. I was eating my myself and asked the hostess where to sit- she said I could sit at smallish table with two other German lads. At first, I thought, how can I do that? Wouldn't they mind? But then I had remembered that communal style seating is quite common in Germany, so it was quite alright. It also was quite rainy, but that didn't stop people from coming in and queuing up to eat. My German was quite rusty, so I didn't know what half the things were on the menu (German only). So I opted for the Fischmix which a lot of people seemed to have ordered and enjoyed both on Yelp and TripAdvisor. The Fischmix, which comes with 5 different types of fish including tilapia and salmon, was really good and tasty (also a little salty- as expected as mentioned by previous reviewers), but I enjoyed the flavors and the dipping sauces to add to the fish. The Fischmix comes with a side of sautéed vegetables, which I ate with each bite of fish with some of the dipping sauce. Also, each fish entree comes with a salad, bread that's topped with pesto, and potatoes (which I chose the "chips" option). Definitely a hearty meal and well worth the €11.90 for my Fischmix entree. I'd definitely want to come back here again sometime on another trip to Hamburg and try all the other fish dishes. Hopefully next time I'll have more time and pop by Karofisch again soon!

The vegetables are dripping in fat and the fish soup is 1/5 oil 2) the fish soup was disappointing but the fish was fresh 3) the portion sizes are smaller than expected. How is it compared to schabi? 1) Better in atmosphere and choices and their fish and chips and sauces + free bread 2) Worse in how it's grilled, freshness and too oily However both schabi and Karo are cheaper but both didn't convinced me in their taste and made of of their fish m chips.

Liman truly blew us away with our first experience so we came back again and again. Here's why... Atmosphere/Appearance: This place is set in Hamburg, but a little further away from the hustle & bustle of downtown in more of a residential section, but still busier than a suburb. Reservations are recommended, but whenever we came here it never seemed busy. The inside is very modern, chic, contemporary, upscale and laid back. It was quiet and just made for a great place I would love to hang out in. Service: Apart from the food, Alice, our server was another reason we kept on coming back. She was truly amazing. She was sweet, funny, personable, made great recommendations and just had an addictive personality. Food: We've tried everything from the filet mignon, to the salmon, to the mixed grill, a series of desserts, pulpo, scallops, you name it. They never missed. This place specialized in seafood, hence its name and it nailed every single dish. My wife literally dreamt about the salmon with the pea foam or whatever it was after the first time she had it. Then the dessert! I could go on and on, but I won't since I only have so many characters to use. The food is exquisite... that's why we kept on coming back. Value: It's a seafood restaurant. Enough said. It's going to be expensive, but not suit & tie-dinner jacket required type of expensive. Bring your wallet regardless because you're going to want everything on the menu. Lol. You can guess my conclusion. Although, our friend Alice no longer works there, the food will still keep us coming back over and over to try more things on the menu every time we're in Hamburg. Make your way here if you're in the area!

The fish is on display and brought in daily & once it's gone they are done. Freshness, simplicity & great taste made to order is how I would describe what they are doing at Schabis We all ordered the shrimp with sauce (Gambas aus der Pfanne). You get a salad with the entree. The shrimp were cooked perfectly and the sauce (with a little spicy kick) was more like a rich, creamy soup that went nicely with the fresh bread. The potatoes on the side were very tasty also. It was a sunny but cool (almost spring day) and eating that fabulous shrimp dish sitting at bench tables outside was amazing! A great seafood stop & hidden gem in Sternschanze!

People like up and they push you to eat and leave. You get your fish thrown on your plate to finish it as quick as possible while you have people around you starring at you to finish up quick. The spaces are so tight that you almost sit on the labs of your neighbor. The fish and chips.. the fish was not tasty. It was not baked properly. Karo Fisch was better but also not great, Karo Fisch Fish and chips was more crunchy and we liked that more. However we felt that Schabi had fresher fish and grilled it better with less oil than karo Fisch. Karo Fisch im the other hand had more choices, sauces and was way more comfortable and pleasant to eat

This place is absolutely phenomenal! If you're a foodie, you have to check it out. If you're not a foodie, you should still check it out. The reviews are super impressive and very well deserved, and popular with the locals it is. Always a great sign, right? Ok, so here's the deal: you enter the space down a few stairs from the street level. You order your dish and a drink at the counter. The place is made up of a pretty cramped connection of tiny rooms with only a few tall tables around. Some with stools. Most without. But in pleasant weather, the great majority of folks are outside on the open sidewalk umbrella-covered tables that are pretty much full of people either enjoying their food or waiting for their food. When they have a bunch of dishes ready, they put them out on the counter and ring a bell. What? No, I'm not kidding. Then a bunch of customers just swoop right in and grab their dishes. Apparently everyone is a regular and already knows the drill, but I still have no idea how people know who gets what or when that bell ring is for them or not. Just bizarre, but it certainly seems to work. These are very happy diners, for sure. Luckily for me, the counter-lady was really sweet and clued in this rather clueless American when my dish was included in which bell ringing round. I had ordered the seafood lasagna w/carpaccio. Sounded amazing, and it certainly was. OMG. Happy me! Delic!! Lovely fresh pasta and veggies in a somewhat deconstructed lasagna style with a lot of yummy broth. Somewhat soupy. Just fantastic. The other dish available that day was a swordfish with potatoes on a bed of greens. Looked amazing and appeared to be the most popular. The Chef creates the menu each day of only 1 or 2 dishes, based on the freshest ingredients available in the markets that day. Brilliant! Simple concept. Simple food. Nothing fancy. Just fantastically prepared super fresh big plates of homey food. Everyone brings out their own flatware/napkin/drink to their tables, picks up their own dish from the counter when ready, and self-busses and drops off their dirty plates when they're done. Highly highly recommended!

He's so attentive to his customers and makes a huge effort to entertain the entire restaurant. We got several free shots of alcohol and the entire restaurant toasts together. The atmosphere is cozy, festive, and lively. There was even a traditional guitar singer that serenaded us twice in the night. My favorite part of my four course meal was the parrot fish and the crème brûlée-like dessert. I'm not sure what it was, but it was GOOD. We also ordered a bottle of wine, which was 22 euros a bottle. I'd say the style of the food was Portuguese fusion. The fun part is that the chef decides what you will eat so you don't have to order your food. The fish that he served us was extremely fresh. I think this is a great place to go with some friends or to celebrate a special occasion like a birthday. At the end of the meal, the owner also gives the ladies a single rose. :) Four solid stars for the food, and 7 stars for the service. I'll most likely be back!
