To some extent you can rely on local trade but to drum up customers, from further afield, I imagine is a pretty tricky thing. I thing that standing out from the crowd would be the first trick, and Tammy's is one that does this for sure. Not only do they sell all the usual suspects, beautiful pre-arranged bouquets and custom made, but they also sell some gorgeous potted plants. Not so unusual, I hear you say? Well, perhaps not but I haven't told you about the display yet! These aren't just your standard hyacinths stuffed into a plastic brown pot, oh no! You can get little wooden wheelbarrow arrangements, bright pink bowls and (my favourite) tea cup and saucer arrangements! They also had some really cool felt flower pot arrangements too. I was really impressed at how imaginative their window display was and can imagine that a gift of a potted wheelbarrow would be so much nicer than the plain alternative. For some thoughtful gifts Tammy's is worth travelling just a little bit further than the city centre!

For flowers though, prices are about average - more than a garage forecourt, less than a designer florist - and not much to pay for the smile they'll bring to their recipient's face.

They had a huge selection spilling right out on to the street - roses, daffodils, grass plants, carnations (I think?) and more than I could possibly name! I'm not too up on my flora so you'll have to excuse me on that front. The lady in the shop was really lovely and clearly couldn't wait to help me so I purchased a lovely grass plant which now takes pride of place in the conservatory. Best of all? It's still alive! It is a petite shop with just enough space to display some rather gorgeous bunches of flowers! I know Interflora is a giant chain but the flowers here really are beautiful! Very natural and not too OTT looking, like a posy picked straight from a secret garden! But whatever style of bouquet you like you can have one made specially to your requirements. Leeds House of Flowers also sells fair-trade flowers, including roses and sunflowers, for anyone concerned about the treatment of workers in the flower industry.

Providing classy arrangements to the local residents Floral Expression is part of interflora so you get the fancy bouquets and gift baskets that you can find anywhere else so really if you can an independent florist that will support you needs may be we should start a revolution against interflora. Floral Expression manages to buck this trend and be traditional without being twee, offering seasonal and exotic flowers in bouquets and baskets of all shapes and sizes. Prices are noticeably cheaper than at some of Expression's more fashionable contemporaries, and, for most people at least, the joy of getting a large, colourful bouquet of roses or lilies will far outweigh any fashion kudos they might accrue through displaying a solitary, structured bloom, no matter how cool it might look.

Luckily enough, you don't have to actually have to go there to get your bouquet on, as, like most florists, they deliver. I recently needed to get some flowers for a friend's mother (not because I was trying to seduce her, but because she'd provided me with some free accommodation in Spain), and used this place to choose an expensive looking (but in reality quite cheap) lilly arrangement. It was delivered on time, and from what I heard, presented well with the correct message on the card. All in all, a very good performance from the House of Flowers - but what else would you expect from a business with a name like that.
