Cardinal Funeral Homes has been serving families in Toronto since 1925. As a fourth-generation, family-owned funeral home, we have deep roots in the communities we serve and a strong belief that families deserve care that is personal, thoughtful, and steady during some of life’s most difficult moments.
What makes us unique is the balance we try to bring to every family we serve: over 100 years of experience, paired with a modern and compassionate approach to funeral care. We help families plan traditional funerals, visitations, cremation services, memorial gatherings, pre-planning, and personalized celebrations of life, always with the goal of making the process feel less overwhelming.
Our team is known for taking care of the little details, communicating clearly, and helping families create services that feel meaningful and true to the person being remembered. Whether a family’s wishes are simple or more involved, religious or non-religious, traditional or contemporary, we are here to guide them with warmth, patience, and professionalism.
We are proud to serve Toronto’s diverse communities, including many Ukrainian, Portuguese, Muslim, Catholic, Orthodox, and other faith and cultural communities, while welcoming every family with the same level of dignity and care.

History
Established in 1925.
Cardinal Funeral Homes was founded in 1925 by James Cardinal, who emigrated from Ukraine, served in World War I, worked with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and later dedicated himself to funeral service. After first establishing the firm in Fort William, now Thunder Bay, James moved to Toronto in 1941 and opened Cardinal Funeral Homes at 366 Bathurst Street, where our Bathurst Chapel remains today.
His son Leo later returned to the family business after serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force, and in 1964 expanded Cardinal Funeral Homes by opening our Annette Street Chapel. Leo’s son Jim continued the family’s legacy, modernizing the business and rebuilding the Bathurst location in 1991.
Today, the fourth generation of the Cardinal family continues to lead the company with the same commitment that has guided us for 100 years: caring for families with compassion, dignity, and personal attention.
Meet the Business Owner: Jimmy C.
I am the fourth generation of the Cardinal family to serve families as a funeral director in Toronto. I first started working at the funeral home during summer breaks in high school and university, and over time I came to understand just how meaningful this work can be. Being invited to help families during such important and emotional moments is a responsibility I have never taken lightly.
After studying Economics at McGill University, I attended Humber College and became a licensed funeral director in 2012. In 2018, I became President of Cardinal Funeral Homes as my father began gradually stepping back from the day-to-day operations of the business.
What inspires me most is the opportunity to continue my family’s tradition of compassionate care while also helping Cardinal evolve for the future. Outside of work, I’m happiest spending time with my wife, Amy, and our children, Lily and Finn. I also love travelling, cheering for the Leafs, and finding a great new restaurant.
