** Stay away from Care One at the Highlands Edison NJ ** A Serious Warning About Care One at the Highlands Edison NJ * Deeply concerning care and judgment * Lack of accountability after a serious incident * Poor leadership, oversight, and communication * A disturbing lack of compassion and empathy My 20-year-old daughter was in recovery staying at Care One in Edison. She needed physical rehab and nursing care to get her strength back from an undiagnosed neurological disorder. She was in severe pain and not fully mobile. She was admitted on Friday May 1st. On Tuesday May 26th she was in her room and two of the Techs were going to clean her. My daughter indicated that she was in pain and did not want to be touched. One of the Techs held her down, while the other used forced to wash her. She told them repeatedly that she was in pain and one tech responded, "That's not my problem" they continued to hold her down and did not stop although she them to let go "I'm in pain". After the incident she called me, terribly upset at the force they used and how much pain she was in. I reported the incident immediately to the Director of Nursing and told her what happened and she tried to dismiss the incident and blame my daughter. This is not acceptable. No one should be subjecting a disabled patient in pain to this type of treatment. My daughter was immediately removed that day from Care One. There was no accountability for this abuse. read more

Hi. Unfortunately I am here now for Physical therapy. I also have failed spinal surgery from a hit & run. I was driving. I have been waiting since 4:15pm for my pain medication, I still haven't received it. It's now 10:31pm & I was informed, that the machine is broken!!!! This place sucks in so many ways. The food, care & the bathroom obviously has some SERIOUS mold issue's. I'm totally disabled now in my spine, I spent at least 10 month's out of 12... in hospital's & rehabs. I will NEVER be back. Type of care was horrible. Rating 0. I felt as if I was in the movies One Flew Over the Coo Coo Nest, Nightmare on Elm Street and I escaped from The Twilight Zone. How I escaped I was sent to hospital. I cried and begged not to be sent back. A social worker at the hospital helped me. I went to a different facility which I would rate 4 1/2 stars. THIS PLACE, the administration, nurse unit managers, social workers, nursing supervisors and nurses are the worst in the industry. NEGLECT NEGLECT NEGLECT Unfortunately my mom passed away today on thanksgiving day under the care of this horrific facility She never had a chance from the neglect at this facility from no privacy curtain to being left with no pants on, freezing cause blankets are thrown on the floor, no assistance from staff for any help - she even had her wedding ring stolen. This place is AWEFUL!!! They do not pay attention to the patients. They have an "I don't care" attitude and when you call no one returns calls. They lose the patients' belongings. Very unprofessional and I would never send a love one here again. read more

The absolute, uncompassionate facility! The nurses and aides were beyond rude. As with other reviews, we too had to have a family member on site to ensure my grandmother was getting proper care. My father was there for two days and they STOLE his clothes brand new tablet and brand new clippers . It took them to put Amy the social worker on the phone when I told them I'm bringing the cops and pressing charges which I'm still going too nobody have called me since and my dad has passed away and I still don't have his things. The most horrifying experience I had recently received at a rehabilitation place. I would like to say I had very sweet nurses name Jennifer(1st shift)and Anna(3rd shift) and a CNAs Kim, a 3rd shift and a traveling one from Ohio. A nurse supervisor named Henry(east 3rd) very professional and kind. When I had a problem with one certain nurse he was on it. The 1st shift supervisor would never listen when her staff would ignore me. (This happen way before the COVID19) One time I had spent 10.5 hours in the wheelchair asking for help. I was always told that they have a bad BACK!!! Why are you working at a REHABILITATION/PHYSICAL THERAPY place? When I was moved to the west wing all my belongings did not follow me one item was their/my wheelchair. I have been asking for my wheelchair for 3 weeks now and still no wheelchair. I had a few nurses from Puerto Rico some where nice but these two other nures did not give me my much needed meds. She came in my room around 1:20pm I asked about them she told me she did give them to me. I told her no she came in here 1x to cut the call light off. We exchange words I told her to leave. Supervisor please!!!!!!! I haven't seen her since This place sucks the only reason I came here because the in house dr at Rahway hospital said my doctor works here. That was not the case....fooled my ass completely. Think he got a $heck. The house dr here is rude and disrespectful. I would bota recommend this place to no one!!!!! read more

I was REALLY impressed with the care my father received at this facility. He stayed for more than 10 weeks, so we provided a really good test of how they performed. My father liked it immediately. He felt like he was making progress in his recovery, just by being in a place that was homier, and that encouraged him to dress in street clothes rather than a hospital gown. Bernadette was the person who enrolled him. A huge issue for us was that he needed transportation for treatments at RWJ Hospital in New Brunswick. Bernadette arranged it quickly and efficiently. The culture of the whole facility was really positive, too. At one point, when my mom and I were looking in to her office to see if Bernadette was available, someone else asked if she could help. The woman explained that Bernadette was in a meeting, but that she could ask her to leave the meeting. We told her we'll wait. Her response was, "Are you sure? We don't mind interrupting meetings to address the concerns of our patients and their families." WOW, that left a fantastic impression! That caring culture was also on display in all the little things that happened over the 10 weeks. For instance, any time the paper towel dispenser jammed, they fixed it within a few minutes. Any time my dad would ring the bell for a nurse, whoever was available (nurse or not) would come quickly to see what he needed. It might still take a little while to address his need, but he at least knew he was not being ignored. Moreover, when my dad wanted to get out for an afternoon, the physician, Dr. Gandhi, allowed us to sign him out. They just wanted to know where he was so they could plan around the outing. The Director of Rehab, Joe, coordinated to make sure that any therapy he needed - occupational, speech or physical - would be flexibly coordinated around his occasional outings, so that his progress would not stop. Dr Gandhi also arranged to have his daily nutrition shipped to his home each month upon his release. Amy, the dietician, originally had him on a 1700+ calorie diet, on which his weight plateaued. When we pointed out that he stopped gaining (even though 1700+ was the medically-approved standard), she agreed to allow him to increase to 2100+ to see how he tolerated it. We appreciated that she was open to increasing the caloric dosage, rather than doggedly adhering to what was no longer working. My dad was also really impressed with the fact that everyone on the staff knew his case, whether they were assigned to him or not. Whenever he worked with a new therapist, she already knew his specific needs. But he was most impressed with the compassion displayed by all his physical/occupational therapists, especially Dhiane. They all made sure he was doing his moves properly, but Dhiane was especially kind. He noticed that she was kind to every patients who came in after him, so he realized this is just who she is. His speech therapist, Alex, could also not have been more helpful. She was organized, took notes and customized lessons to strengthen his weaknesses. Alex accepted his goal of eating real food (albeit liquefied) by Thanksgiving as her goal, and appreciated his level of motivation. Lauren was also very helpful in getting him released permanently before Christmas. His daily treatments ended on Dec 13, but they wanted to observe him a little longer under medical supervision. Lauren arranged all the at-home things he needs to care for himself, as well as nutritional shakes to maintain his weight. The experience at Care One has not been perfect. Over 10 weeks, he occasionally encountered a staff member who was not as flexible as others. The other negative was that the place consistently smelled like urine, even though they did everything humanly possible to keep the place clean. Apparently, the smell was coming from some of the other patients, which, I guess could not be helped. Even so, I recommend this facility wholeheartedly! read more

HEY! If you are looking for the WORST care facility in New Jersey! THIS IS THE ONE, Instead of making you better, staff will go beyond to make sure your health declines, not only are the staff racist, but they also don't care about your well being, and good luck trying to get a hold of anyone in there, they will just hang up, had my dad here for one month and because nurse didn't change dressing on his amputation for two days he developed infection and had to have surgery, nurses are not qualified to do anything, I've dealt with many facilities but this easily is the worst one yet, no professionalism at all and sometimes they don't even feed the patients. They say they have window visiting but guess what?!? They don't even make a walk way or clean up a little bit of snow so you can see your loved ones. I had a horrible experience with this facility 11/2017-12/2017. My dad was a patient there and we as the family had to be there around the clock just to make sure he was being cared for. I don't blame the staff ... they are being overworked due to short staffing... supplies were very limited & even ran out of wipes & depends. We asked to have him moved to another location & the social worker told us that she put the request in with the insurance company & was waiting on a response however we called the insurance company only to find out the request was never submitted. read more

mom was here in 2013 nothing new to add--disgraceful service, LOUSY food they had a thanksgiving dinner & the only thing i'd recognize what i was eating if blindfolded was the ceasar salad mom lost over 25 lbs in 6 wks & to top it off was told being released Dec 2 but main dr wasnt reachable, took two hrs to reach cover who said "not my area" WTF??? then finally got someone he said he couldnt release her so here is my mom all bundled up & packed ready to leave in tears. i was very upset & ripped that POS doctor; felt bad for the staff they did try to reach this idiot who then came in the next day for a maybe 30 second visit to release---total BS & then he had the nerve to send a letter calling to see him. um sorry Mom has a REAL doctor this place is a prime example why NJ is next to last in nursing home/rehab scores read more

I was not happy with the care my sister received at the Highlands. It was not our first choice but the doctor who saw her in the hospital encouraged us to place her there because it was one of the nursing homes he visited for his practice. First, the room was always a mess...used gloves, needle caps, dirty towels, always had to be cleaned up during a visit. Second, she ended up with serious bed sores..need I say more? Third, she was hospitalized twice with an 'infection', no source was ever pinpointed. When she was ready to be discharged, the Highlands said they could not take her back because of the secretions from her trach...of course she had the trach all along-in fact they may have refused to take her back because her Medicare coverage was coming to an end. She is now at a place that takes good care of her, clean body, clean room, pleasant staff. I would not put a loved one at the Highlands-although I have had good experiences with other Care One facilities. read more

June 25, 2016 I am/was a resident of this facility i had two surgeries one for foot and one in Hernia burst I stayed in hospital for a week and transport to Care One At the Highlands On June 3rd They put me first room It look dull and dirty smellly and I told them I don't want this room I want go other room so I found other room perfect It was ok I did brought my own Hand Sanitizer and alcohol wipes To clean overbed table bed rail and head board and foot board U know I did see many germs fingerprints . The foods is ok except pasta is too salty My mom did bring foods from home, I did bring my own fork spoon and knife.. WHen I was in Hospital I wore hospital gown I asked Nurse should I change before I transport the nurse said keep with u to Rehab. When I was in this place I keep Hospital gown to cover pillow I did write name on gown. I told nurse do not take my gown the hospital gave me. i slept on pillow covered with my gown for a month. Social worker was very rude with and Billing Office was rude and nasty. I was supposed be home only one week or 12 days i told them sorry my surgery dr said one more week to stay SO the doctor called my insurance to pre certifcation approved extended stay before social worker called my insurance I went back dr again and doctor said last monday it was still not heal and still infection and draining after doctor and Doctor said stay one more week til monday stay in rehab ok Dr called insurance for extended . I went back to rehab/nursing home again after doctor I told social worker Sorry I am not going home this week I am staying one more week til monday Social Worker has some nerve and She look not so thrill She call insurance change to shorter than 1 week My doctor couldnt believe it I asked Social worker what doctor said Social worker said " I don't care what your doctor said i told them i did call insurance they said always approved for extended stay They wouldn't listen what I said. Next day Wednesday morning Social Worker look happy and saying in body language with hand You going home this friday you going home this friday I got the feelings she want to get rid of me social worker thinks I was ok. I stayed In rehab for almost 1 month. Also at the rehab Therapy was great but becareful peddler wasn't clean many people used hands they should kept clean before other patients use it. also Weight bar wasnt clean When I'm finished with therapy I always wash my hands and used hand sanitzer. Two days ago one patient vomit in hall they didn't clean it carpet when I saw it spot I wheelchair moved different direction to keep away from touching wheels. Also some nurses assistance should repects patients room turn light off when they were sleeping they leave light on when they leave the room I said oh no wtf. I walk slowly turn light off went back to sleep You wouldn't believe it what I saw I saw bugs in therapy room and other room but Not in patients room. Yesterday My last day I don't even want to see social worker face when she walk by or came by i turn away she hurt me enough to rid of me .. I was sitting wheel chair out in hall using wifi and I was watching each room button light flash call for help Many patients each room were waiting longer period of time. I see that many nurses sitting talking ignored the lights flash. SO now I am home today I should have pick Care One in different location in NJ I wish I shouldn't pick this place Care One at The Highlands. Next time if anything happens to me I will pick other locations in Paramus NJ was best and clean! read more

This facility needs a major staff member overhaul. I tried calling CareOne 7 to 8 times one evening to speak with my mother only to be disconnected repeatedly because the staff member did not know how to transfer calls. Since I live out of state, I ended up calling the local Edison police to ask them for help in visiting the site to check on my mother's condition. What an atrocity!!!!! .Also, the social worker, Alexis, never seems available to give family members updates. read more

I will be honest it started off very rocky here. Unfortunately between my mom, dad, and Granparents I'ver been to these places far too often. With the exception of my Grandma they have all been to these places for PT only. That was the case with my 87 year old mom. First of all i saw some negative reviews about the Director. She was always very pleasant and responded to every complaint we had. Her door was always open and I was in there often enough. She was wonderful!!! There was a nurse Pryshna on the night shift who was just wonderful. There were also two aides Carly and Leo who went above and beyond I loved those two. The PT staff was 2nd to none. The OC sat with my mom every morning for an hour. My mom got out on March 30th and to this day my mom calls the OC her friend and wants to take here to dinner. Some of the staff can be a little rough but they do seem to care. The Chef within reason would make my mom whatever she wanted. Mentally my mom was out of it there but through no fault of them. PT staff always kept me abreast and worked really hard with her. Often my mom didn't want to do anything but somehow they got her to buy in. When she got home mentally she snapped back to normal. My mom went in there needing help just to lift herself in bed, she is now able to get up and walk around at home with the help of a walker. Overall they did a good job. My critique would be the Nurses during the day could have been a bit more caring but i realize its only a job. I can tell you this was the best place any family member of mine went too. I would recommend them for PT but I can't comment on the nursing home section read more

Bianca told me ambulance service provided from hospital to Care One which is why I decided to let my late husband go to this facility. I was getting billed and Bianca, who said they cover the ambulance, and Bernadette, in the office, were supposed to take care of it. I was being harassed by ambulance service. Bernadette said I would not get any more bills. Guess what, over a year later and now I got a letter from a debt collector. There were many times they did not give my late husband meals, they would skip over him. When he needed the nurse, I would usually have to go out to the desk to get one as it takes forever if you press the nurse button. Would never send anyone to this location. read more

My grandmother developed a bed sore which became infected, as well as an abscess in her groin area, at this facility. This after we demanded 3 baths a week for her. We would literally sit there on the days of her baths, sometimes until 11:30 p.m., to make sure they took her for her bath. Unfortunately, you can't give a bath to someone and miss their groin area or keep an eye on a bed sore. Currently, my grandmother is at JFK battling the affects of VRE and her whole area from her tailbone to privates is in a state of necrosis. My grandmother cannot feel anything from her hips down. We are hoping and praying my grandmother doesn't feel the pain, that she doesn't become septic and that no other person who has to go to this facility, endures the same tragedy. read more
