Richard at Carmel Valley Test Prep was an excellent tutor who worked with my son weekly for about 2 months on his first ACT. Richard was effective in identifying areas of weakness and developing strategy to improve performance and gain confidence. He assigned daily/weekly practice tests and reviewed results weekly. He is enthusiastic and encouraging, but also firm and principled. Richard came to our home for tutoring sessions since we live close by, which was an added benefit. My son and I enjoyed working with Richard, and very pleased that my son achieved his target ACT score with his very first test (top 1%). The only areas of improvement I can think of are: 1. Have pre-test overall strategy review 2 to 3 weeks before ACT test, rather than 1 week before. My son had other school test he had to prepare and had to skip the last session before ACT. Bad timing! 2. I think it would have been better to try practice ACT for all 4 sections plus writing in one sitting when the time is close to actual ACT test, because this will put the student under the most realistic situation for practice. My son would have benefited from this. Finally, I like how Richard has a very reasonable hourly rate for his tutoring service that you pay each time, so you have all the flexibility without worrying about significant financial commitment upfront like many other test prep companies would do.
