I would say start with the Visitor center, they provide maps, insight on wild life, environment & safety tips. They offer free guided tours at 7:30am daily & you can rent sleds to use on the dunes! Entrance is $25 p/car, valid for 7 days. The map clearly indicates the trails/hikes, i attempted all, but gave up half way due to the heat, it really was difficult to handle. The trails are easy to walk, great for pictures & do keep an eye for animal paw prints on sand. The picnic area features shade, tables, and grills, might be nice in winter, or sunset. Despite the heat i genuinely enjoyed the experience, and would highly recommend! Preparation: take plenty of water, food, snacks. Theres a tiny gift shop, but NO restaurants onsite. I repeat- bring plenty of water #1 priority

Wow! This place is…read moreridiculous. It's vast and gorgeous and simple and experience not to be missed. The white sands are so beautiful and serine. Soak it all in. Listen to nature and nothing. Breathe and be still! Watch the 15 min video at the visitor center, gives you perspective. Sledding: get less sleds than you're thinking. You only need 1-2 sleds for group of 4-5ppl. The hills are steep and you likely won't all go at the same time so save a few dollars. Find a track already paved, make it easy for yourself. Bring/wear: Wear sunscreen, hats, sunglasses and comfy shoes. (Or go barefoot, for real!) it's really bright out and hot. We're here in September. Bring lots of water and snacks. Visitor center: they have maps, sleds, bathrooms, so much info, all the merch and goodies. You'll be going from the car to the sand so don't worry about packing too much on you. Enjoy!

You are definitely going off grid out there No gas stations either, so be sure to fill up. The hills will consume more gas compared to driving on a flat road I would've liked to explore the area more, but mainly drive there to see the dwellings. The hike up can be a bit strenuous for some, it's not but about a half a mile hike. It can get rough though for those who don't do any movement at all. Once in the dwellings, you'll be in there for about 30 minutes max, if you're alone. We stumbled on a tour guide, who talked about each of the rooms. He was really cool. Shout out to Keith, & Gus. As well as the guy who gave us a brief modern history of the dwellings. Couldn't see his name tag I will go back one day, but I will plan for a longer stay next time lol Silver City is a little over 1 hour away, but it feels like a lot longer

We paid the entry fee to take our kids and dogs to the lake, followed the main road, and immediately turned toward the water only to get violently stuck in deep, un-warned soft sand. We spent nearly an hour freaking out in the brutal heat, shoveling sand, and panicking with our kids and pets in the vehicle. When I called the park office for assistance? Absolute silence. Nobody answered, nobody was available to help. If it weren't for the sheer grace of a random Good Samaritan who stopped to shovel and pull us out, we would have been completely stranded. What makes this infuriating is the absolute lack of accountability and communication from the staff. The girl who checked us in and took our money didn't say a single word, offer a map, or give any warning about the driving conditions near the water. As a state park, it is incredibly irresponsible not to warn paying customers and New Mexico residents about these massive sand traps. Total safety hazard and zero customer service. Avoid this place.

This memorial area is worth a visit. Maybe because I am a combat veteran I feel more emotionally invested in any Veterans Park or museum, but I encourage everyone to take a little time every now and then to remember why our country is what it is today. Regardless of political affiliation, all our freedoms come from the same place. The museum here is small but packed full of uniforms and individual's personal history from all major wars and conflicts. The park outside has a replica Vietnam Veterans Wall. There is a history walk. Then there is that large, beautiful flag pole. Pull in.

It is on the site of an area where several million years ago, a volcanic eruption threw numerous large boulders on to the landscape. The park has driving areas and hiking trails around and between these boulders. We spent several hours waking through and had lunch in the park at the picnic area. We had a good time exploring the park and recommend a visit if you're in the area.
