I love Ben and Jerry's however the flavors that they had in Melbourne were not available where I live. However I did get a scoop of fish food which was still excellent. If you are in a situation where you want gelato but could not find any, Ben and Jerry's still does the trick. I would recommend.

Get in line though as it can be busy. As well as a selection of breads and slices they also do gourmet pies, flaky sausage rolls and quiches. They have a sandwich bar so get your fresh roll ready for lunch here. There is a drinks fridge with a range of soft drinks and they also do coffee. It was already full by this stage and had a constant stream of locals grabbing donuts for the morning. We ordered a ham and cheese croissant, egg and bacon bun and a coffee. The coffee was fantastic. Could not fault. The bun and croissant were delicious, the scramble in the bun was especially good. We sat was a little watching the steady stream come and go before grabbing some take away baked goods. We got all 3 donuts flavours with the favourite being hot cross bun donut. Donut dough with sultanas and filled with custard. Amazing! We also grabbed a choc chip marshmallow cookie. The size of my hand and absolutely delicious. I could live off these! Moderate room inside to sit and a few tables out. All the food is able to be taken away and it also runs as a standard bakery with beautiful artisan breads. We will definitely be back soon and it's now our go to place to pick up treats when visitors come over.

Recent price changes have a Tiny (baby scoop) at $4 and Single Scoop $4.80. I typically avoid the Fitzroy store due to the crushing crowds and didn't really get caught up in the hype of it all until last month. I wound up addicted to Messina after a short stint in Bondi. Here I learnt the trick to the optimum Gelato Messina experience. Always go for the specials board. Rotating regularly, the specials board always has the most out there combinations that will rock your world. In Sydney I had ones like the Momofuku 'crack pie' with hunks of caramelly biscuit in cereal milk gelato, or cream cheese gelato packed full of red velvet cake. Today at the new Richmond store, I had the "You Make My Day', which featured Toasted Milk Gelato with Oreo cookies and Dulce de Leche. It only just beat out the Coconut special filled with passionfruit curd & pineapple cake...which I kinda want to go back for before it goes away! I can't imagine the Richmond store being any less popular than Fitzroy, but at least many of us won't need to cross town anymore!

The owners of Vegie Bar opened Girls & Boys last month to satisfy the ever-growing demand for all things vegan on Brunswick St, and I'm sure glad they did. One of the great things about Girls & Boys is that they have a window there for take-away Vegie Bar food. Yes, that's right, you can now get Vegie Bar food to go -- no more waiting endlessly for a table, no more surly hipster waiters, no more practically sitting in your neighbor's lap as you crane to reach your plate -- just the good ol' Vegie Bar food you know and love in a fraction of the time and to be eaten in the comfort of your own home. (Or wherever.) Just pop in to Girls & Boys and go to the Vegie Bar takeaway window to your left. But let's talk about the Girls & Boys desserts, as this place is primarily a dessert shop. They have a variety of gorgeous, artfully created desserts -- puddings and little cakes and tarts and things like that -- that rival the likes of Brunetti (but without the cruelty of eggs and dairy!) A lot of them are also gluten-free or free from refined sugar. I will add there's not a HUGE amount of selection, but what they do have is beautiful. Personally, I was in the mood for gelato so I sampled the blood orange gelato (yum) but ended up going with chocolate hazelnut because it's hard to find vegan chocolate hazelnut gelato in this world! (probably a good thing for my waistline). While it wasn't the most amazing gelato on the planet, it was really really good, tasted exactly like a dairy chocolate hazelnut gelato would, and I would happily order it again. They also do soft-serve (including choc-tops!), smoothies (some healthier than others), and coffee (including your usual trendy stuff like turmeric and matcha lattes). They offer the whole variety of non-dairy milks for your coffees, including macadamia nut milk, which is unusual and pretty cool. The place doesn't really have any seating, so it's more of a grab-and-go kind of place. Service was friendly. Price is reasonable -- along the lines of other speciality dessert-type places. Even if you're not vegan, this is a great place to go if you have a dairy or gluten allergy, and a great place to get fancy little cakes and things for those special treat-yourself occasions as well. But even if you have ZERO dietary restrictions, this place is worth a visit -- don't miss it.
