If…read moreit was something important rather than junk mail, I had to have it addressed somewhere else, which defeats the purpose of a virtual office. But last year, I moved up to a desk. Better, right? Same experience. Things were lost. Mail was never found. Every single time. So I decided to cancel my lease at the end of the year, and here it is, almost March 1st, and I'm still waiting on my deposit because they said they can hold it for up to 60 days. 60 days for a desk! Find somewhere else. Rent a PO Box. Anything other than go through what I did at The Yard.

The Yard is no different with two kitchens, several couch areas, around 7 long tables, cubicles, and tons of offices of varying sizes. The offices breakup the Coworking theme a bit but it's good for small business. The Yard is full of light. Their conference rooms are fit for a film set. The rooftop view alone is worth the $3800/ per month price tag for a 6 person office. Call the office now. February's sale is crazy. Any 4+ person office is 40% off for 6 months with a 13 month contract. Did I mention the complimentary coffee, tea and on-site gym with showers? If not, it's worth the tour.

Most of it is little stuff: The kitchen is poorly equipped (plenty of coffee mugs, but just paper plates and paper bowls for lunch); it's cold in the winter; the snacks are hardly worth getting up for (cheap crap from costco most days, with the occasional exception); the chairs are super uncomfortable, optimized for chic magazine-cover aesthetics over actual usability. A little bit more important is the flaky internet, which I've struggled with since I got here. I've had to continually move around the facility to chase elusive solid connections. The worst, though, is that when I signed up in January, I specifically informed them that I was moving out of the area at the end of February. The sales person told me to just cancel the membership at the end of the month, but for some reason I interpreted that as "at the beginning of the next cycle". When I went to cancel today (the first business day of February), they happily informed me that they'd be charging me for the entire month of March ($332) and there was nothing I could do about it, despite the fact that it would be physically impossible for me to utilize my membership. The tone in the email almost made me feel like they were high-fiving in the background, having caught another sap on a yet another stupid technicality. Like I said, just don't bother. There are better places out there with better people staffing them.

The exposed brick and industrial style is greatly complemented by the full kitchen with complimentary coffee and tea (+beer if you want). The bonus? Pet friendly! Bring your dog or cat to work! They're welcome! There's also events that happen at least once a month that gets the building occupants together to get to know and learn from each other. The main level is a flight up some stairs where it is the social area and casual conversation is allowed. It also has the login iPad, the kitchen, two restrooms, and the printer. The upper level has extra tables, quiet spaces and the conference rooms which require reservation. This location is above a La Colombe where you can get a discount with your Cove membership. If you're not familiar with cowork spaces, know that there are quite a few options in DC and Cove was one of the first to span the District. Even before cowork spaces like WeWork became popular. I've been with Cove since 2014 and have seen its growth as a company. As most regulars here are entrepreneurs in need of an office space or a scene away from coffee shops, Cove does a good job of organizing events to help you become social with the like minded. Though I'm not a regular of such events, I know these are great opportunities that build a good sense of community. So if you're interested in trying Cove and/or would like a referral code to get $50 credit towards your membership, holla at ya girl! Or just go to one of the many Cove locations NOT during Members Only hours so a host can tell you all about it.

Not recommended for women…read more There are a couple of men acting in a way that is uncomfortable to be around as a woman: one man sleeps overnight at the site by hiding in some of the rooms with the lights turned off (this feels uncomfortable as a female member working there late at night during proper opening hours, but with few if any other members around); another man (a member, not staff!) moves women's belongings (including bag, valuable & personal items, hat etc) to another section of the premises without their permission nor knowledge (when you step away for a break), and has said some pretty creepy things, showing a complete lack of boundaries around women. Some other women saw some of this and said it made them feel uncomfortable too. So I reported this to the management and asked them to review, but they turn a blind eye. (As an ex-Wall Streeter, I'm very used to, and comfortable in, all-men spaces.) This is a critical lack of executive thinking by Cove execs that will hamper their growth because this is precisely what puts off potential outside investors (I work with the largest institutional investors in the US on inclusive capitalism) - as well as putting off female customers - and opens them up to litigation risk. In what is a very crowded market, this is a management failure that they can't afford. This is why all-male executive teams are a liability, as Silicon Valley has amply demonstrated: time to start taking women seriously. Raise your game, chaps!

I chose to move here into a smaller office space because of those conveniences, but I wasn't expecting the high level of service that the management and concierge team consistently deliver. Any small issue I've encountered from setting up my computers to furniture, it's taken care of almost instantly. Damien, Dynisha and Bethany are always present, and ready to assist in any way they can. I can't speak highly enough about these three. As a member, there are so many services that are included such as printing, secure shredding, shipping etc. It's truly a great way to run a business. I can focus on what I do, and I have complete confidence in the team here to take care of everything else. The cost savings are remarkable when you add up all the small things you mindlessly pay for and spend time on in your own office. When I meet clients they are greeted by the professional concierge and I can easily access a conference room- they're always clean and fully equipped for meetings of any size and style. There's an amazing fresh-ground coffee machine and snacks available in the lounge. My clients get the best experience when they come in, and that alone is priceless to me. I'll be here for the long run and planning to expand to a larger space as our team grown.
