For as long as I could remember, this address has always been a fresh fish market. It has changed owners many times over through the years. In my opinion, there's nothing like a stand alone fish market (as opposed to those that have a little fish section in a gourmet shop) unless it's Fairway or a similar store. I absolutely adore seafood and it's also my favorite animal protein. I've been shopping here since forever and I really like their variety of seafood. There's even a sushi section (although I've never tried) that appears to be appealing and fresh. On my favorite food holiday--Christmas Eve--when the Italian (and my family) tradition is everything seafood (no less than 7), I always find myself shopping here. This market is very crowded around that time of the year. This store has fresh and frozen assortment of both shellfish and seafood. Mussels, clams, scallops, squid, shrimp, Branzino, trout, filet of sole, filet of trout, filet of whiting, sea bass, lump crab meat, king crab sticks, salmon, crab cakes and a lot more. I tend to stay away from Tilipia and Basa. You might notice at any fish market, it's the cheapest fish by the pound. And that's because it's imported from murky waters. At least that's what I've read and believe. In addition to a variety of seafood, there are various accompaniments & condiments such as cocktail sauces, Panko breadcrumbs, tarter sauce, fish fry batters, etc. I don't think they carry every variety of fish, but there's enough. And it's fresh. One thing to note---at times, they will sell out of certain fish. That's when you put plan B into place after the disappointment. BTW, I bought one pound of clean squid ringlets. I made a fresh sauce to accompany my squid ink pasta :) Good stuff here. read more

On Saturday I bought lemon sole fish as I was looking for a white fish option. I strolled down the street as I noticed a fowl smelled. Googled lemon sole and it stated it was a mild smelling fish and if it has a fishy smell it's past it prime. I quickly return and asked to exchange thinking maybe it was a certain cut that was past its prime and in the spirit of trying to support local small businesses. I left again and smell was there just milder. I immediately went home, padded it dry and froze it wrapped in Saran Wrap. A few days later now Tuesday I took out the fish to cook it, the smell still existed so I said maybe if I cook it the smell will leave. After cooking the fish it tasted just as bad as it smelled. I decided to return to the store and ask for a refund and explain what happened. Thinking that after I explain myself they would understand, the owner who I believe checked me out laughed in my face as if I was lying. He did provide me a refund however I will never return based on the customer service that I received. I'm a good customer and rarely complain. He responds that freezing the fish will not have the same quality depending on the day you buy it. I told him the smell existed the day I bought it and I have never had this issue after freezing fish. To laugh in a customers face when they tell you that your product that you're selling isn't at the quality it should be is an insult and not appreciate it. Not recommended. I will return to Fish Tales, the fish store down the street as I have never had this issue in the past when buying fresh fish with them. This place just happened to be closer. read more

Got salmon for $22/ lb from them and it was very fishy. I couldn't tell in the store cause I had my mask on, courtesy of covid, but when I got home - and after cooking the fish - I could tell it was very fishy. Very annoying that at this price the fish was basically inedible. Will try to bury it in a fishcake. read more

This is a really great fish monger - the owner always is happy to see us and serves us with a smile. Always a good selection of fish and other seafood, as well as sushi and bottled sauces (such as soy sauce, ponzu etc). We buy from these guys every week. Price is comparable to, and often cheaper than, what you pay in Union Market. Support your friendly local fishmonger! It's more than worth it. read more

I love this store! It has a great selection of both high-quality standard fish (big salmon filets, shrimp in a few different sizes, crab, etc.) and lots of specialty Asian groceries, like Korean ramen, frozen gyoza, and sauces of all types. Plus, there's surprisingly good pre-made sushi in the front fridge case--it's a staple of my diet. The staff is super-friendly and helpful and the prices are very reasonable. Okay- here is the deal. The fish we bought was great but with TWO caveats. 1) When I looked at my receipt she had charged my $99 dollars. THANK GOD I looked!!!! They didn't know how to use the credit card machine and after 20 minutes of fuddling around ended up refunding me in cash. Lesson here? Pay them in cash. 2) I asked for a serving recommendation for two, and suggested that I thought I only needed one fillet. The server insisted I needed two, so I took her suggestion. One fillet was more than enough- two was a ridiculous amount and I felt swindled. With that in mind- the fish was fresh, they are near home, and I'll be back with my own serving suggestions and CASH. read more

I recently wrote about a flounder I bought here that was as good as the best fish I can buy in Manhattan. The reason I come from Manhattan (and bring it back to the Bronx where I live) to buy my fish at Carrol Gardens FM is because they sell such better and fresher fish! As good as you can get anywhere or as good as I've eaten anywhere (that includes fishes from Ecuador, Italy and Thailand that are pulled out of the sea, cooked and put on your plate - yes THAT fresh!) The fish here is worth the extra travel time! I went back a couple of days ago and the flounder I bought was the same as before and I'm so glad. I love this fish store. I've been here multiple times for fresh salmon, and each and every time, they do not disappoint. They definitely get the full 5 stars for consistency. I've been going here since 2013 so I keep track of their service. If it starts to go downhill, I'm out of there! The nicest, older couple are so sweet and are always amazed at how much salmon we buy in bulk -- usually 3 or 4 slabs, occasionally some white fishes. Not only are they polite and friendly, but they are also very accommodating, in the sense that if you ask for little things like extra bagging and extra ice packs, they do it no problem. No attitude or anything. And considering how much we are spending, it's refreshing when people actually remember customer service. Super clean place too, never have to worry about the fish not being fresh enough, cold enough, or bugs flying around because their fish is enclosed in cases instead of in the open, laid out on ice. As soon as you walk in, the small place looks organized (which is a good sight to see!), with all the fish on the right, and other assortments of lobster tails, shrimps, frozen foods, in coolers on the left. The floor isn't wet or slimy. It doesn't stink of fish, like the Chinatown fish market area. I never get sick from it, and I've eaten it raw when I made salmon sushi rolls. So it's good whether cooked or not! Definitely worth a visit! read more

Great fish at this local market and impeccably clean. They have a great selection of fish and the product is alway s fresh. They seem to be constantly upgrading the store and my friend is a city inspector and recommended this place said they had the best scores out of all the places. If you love fish go here. On the other hand, if you prefer to pay a fair price for a great product, the Carroll Gardens Fish Market offers an impeccably clean store with an extremely fresh selection of a wide variety of seafood items, at a price 30 - 40 % lower than the above. Case in point, on Easter, wild raw shrimp at Union Market was $13.99 a pound. At the Fish Market, only $8.99. I was happy to walk the extra 10 feet. read more

This is the real deal. A fully functional fish shop, with the fillets packed in ice and a drain in the floor. They have a full range of fish, and if you ask, they'll even descale your fillet for you -- a nice touch. C. and I got two fillets of red snapper, and while the fish was a little meatier than expected, we may have overcooked it -- and I'll be sure to return for another kind of fish. Outstanding! I am a foodie and former chef, and I can say hand-on-heart this is one of the best fish shops in the city. I think the owners are Japanese, which I see reflected in the beautiful preparation of the produce. The place is immaculate - needs to be seen to be believed. I honestly don't know why you'd go anywhere else. Why not support local small businesses who are putting heart and soul into an outstanding product, rather than bland, pre-wrapped supermarket fare? I got two lobsters and a dozen oysters for Christmas here. I asked the guy if they would be good the next day, he said yes. I put everything in the fridge over night and the next evening, when I pulled it all out of the fridge, the lobsters were DEAD. If you know anything about lobster, you know its dangerous to eat ones that have been dead for a while. Sadly, I had to chuck them (and waste $40, which really sucks). When they put them in the bag at the market, they did it in the back, so I never got to see if they were fresh or alive. Secondly, after eating the oysters from there, I lifted one up from the plate and a worm crawled out. This is common for the shells of the oysters to have remnants of the sea like harmless worms on them, but nonetheless, the whole experience was stomach turning and upsetting. read more

I love going and picking out fresh fish for dinner. Not only is the staff nice and friendly but they cater to my cooking for one. Although they don't typically sell 3 or 4 oz. portions, they understand that I am only cooking for myself. The prices are very reasonable and the fish is fresh. One time I didn't have any cash on me and I wasn't buying enough to make the $5.00 credit card minimum so they told me I could just pay them next time. I returned two days later to pay them back and they were just as courteous as usual.
