But where? Reviewers touted the Inn Of The Turquoise Bear.....and they were right. Pros: - Location: Central. Just south of the downtown area and a 15 minute walk to Canyon Road. - Exterior: A sprawling property in a residential neighborhood. Several smaller buildings seem to have been added over the (many) years to the main building seen on most photos of the property. - Interior: Like going back 100 years. Things were fixed, of course...especially in public spaces...but you might feel as if you're in a living museum. - Our Room (Witter Byner): Large and rambling. More than enough room for 2 people plus a balcony overlooking the front of the property. Very comfortable. I could live there for a month if we didn't mind going up and down 15 stairs to the main floor. One interesting aspect: The bathroom. It was very nice and fully equipped, but separate from our room and down 5 stairs. That wasn't a problem during the day, but a few nights were an adventure - Breakfast: Unreal. Everything was homemade with great taste. The buffet portion had sliced fruit, granola, juices, pastries and yogurt. The hosts and kitchen staff had 3-5 entrees available each day. I rarely tried those since I filled up on the buffet, but my wife ate one every day and only had good things to say. Service at the community table was gracious and unhurried with lots of interesting conversation. - Amenities: A 1-2 hour Happy Hour every day starting at 430 or 5 PM. Fresh cookies, fruit, tea and jug water were available all day (coffee from 630-10 AM). Umbrellas. Plenty of smiles. - Hosts: Everyone was very friendly, helpful, informative and even charming. Special thanks to Aileen (sp?). - Housekeeping: Effective, efficient and unobtrusive. - Parking: Sufficient. The large courtyard in front of the of the property provided enough room for cars in the 11 room B&B. - Price and Value: Reasonable. It's not cheap, but as in most cases you get what you pay for. We'd heartily recommend the Inn Of The Turquoise Bear, but make reservations well in advance.

Many of his literary friends visited here and the guest rooms are named for them. There is assigned park parking as well as it's a premium in town. The bed sits just inches from the toilet door, so unless you're unusually close with your travel companion, pack earplugs and a blindfold. Dust was caked into the corners, a dead bug was in the ripple of the vintage rug, and we were greeted by a dried booger on the bathroom door (seriously). The door frame lets light in, the floors creaked like a haunted house, and the entire layout felt like it was designed by someone who's never actually had to sleep there. There were no privacy blinds, only wooden shutters, and the artwork provided enough clutter to fill the room just in case you forgot your own luggage. Breakfast was the big show! Most of what we were served was delicious. For an extra $45 per person, you'll be given whatever the kitchen feels like making that morning... no choices, no allergy considerations, and not even a glass of water. Instead, you're handed an herbal infusion and expected to sip with gratitude while waiting 90 minutes for your dessert tart. But our group's disappointment simply must have meant we didn't understand the "magic" of the experience. In the end, Casa Culinaria is the kind of place that confuses ambiance with hospitality and is more interested in curating an image than creating a welcoming stay. If you're searching in Santa Fe for a splintering rocking chair, garden corners appropriate for Instagram, or even paying $340/night to be treated like an inconvenience... this is the winner! We had two beds and they were so comfortable and the linens were fabulous. The wall hangings and paintings were gorgeous. The bathroom was adorable and had pretty New Mexican tile. Even the carpets and rugs were beautiful. They do have a restaurant and room service. They have a complementary breakfast cooked to order which is something I have never seen before. Unfortunately we were so tired the next day we missed the breakfast, but we will definitely book another stay in this hotel. The reception area is beautiful and has lovely couches and sitting areas. The paperwork in the rooms is extremely thorough and will tell you everything you need to know, from room service to if you have difficulty parking your car to nearby restaurants and sightseeing. I did not read all of the paperwork when I first got to the hotel and in the morning I called for coffee to be delivered to my room. I later saw that coffee is actually set out for guests in the reception area so the woman who brought me the coffee really only did it out of kindness. The hotel is actually quite a large, sprawling complex, much deeper that what might be assumed when pulling in. We got there mid-afternoon so could park rt in front of our first floor room. I hadn't even thought about that but my creaky knees were happy and quite relieved to only hv to haul my wee bag up 7 steps or so. Check in was easy, if a bit crowded, as a lot of regulars like to show up a bit early too. The doorman was a very polite young man and everyone made us feel welcome. The older gentleman at the counter was a font of information And made sure we knew abt the Happy Hour Short and sweet Whatever you do: try the biscochitos! (The official NM state cookie, fyi - for a reason - when done right, and these definitely are!) This wasn't exactly what I thought it was going to be, but still a pleasant stay…read more I thought this was going to be like a hotel, but it's more like an apartment or air bnb (without all that air bnb baggage). It's a compound of apartment like buildings separate from the checkin site. The part I stayed in had three gates with security codes, so safety was taken into account. I stayed in a king suite and it was very large. A full kitchen with stove/microwave/full sized fridge as well as a large living area with skylight. The bedroom was separate and up a small set of steps. The windows were exposed to the whole courtyard, so might wanna keep the curtains closed. The bathroom was a little small, but very usable, and the shower was hot and had great pressure. Bed was a little firm for my taste, but I slept great, so I can't complain. It's a me thing, not a them thing. They also had a full sized fireplace and matches, though I couldn't get it lit to save my life. I should have used some scrap paper or something to get it going. The checkin crew was very kind and accommodating and watched my backpack while I wandered around before checkin time. My room was ready a couple hours early. This hotel/site is about 4/10 of a mile from the plaza and the main part of town (the walk is easy, not hilly or problematic). It's very quiet and about the same distance from several restaurants. It was about half the price of the hotel that's right on the plaza. I only stayed for 30 hours, so maybe I would've stayed at the hotel on the plaza just for convenience, but for much more than a day or two, this is a much better value (I paid just over 200 dollars a night). They have breakfast and a patio and tables available in the morning. You can get Lyfts here, but they also have a ton of business cards for cabs.

They were instantly responsive to every request and it was clear that the staff is fully committed to the guest experience. The rooms are incredibly unique in this building that is centuries old and uniquely decorated from the owners world travels but keeping with the Santa Fe feel. The included breakfasts were amazing with incredible service. They also have included town car service within 3 miles so almost all of the local restaurants and shopping/art galleries within distance. It was so easy to get dropped off and picked up for meals and shopping which we did many times. While certainly not an inexpensive property, I can truly say that it was worth the value for an unbelievably memorable experience.

For that price, and for being a 3-star hotel, Four Kachinas fell well below what we were expecting. Hotel Tech Report describes 3-star hotels as follows: "Three stars: a typical hotel will have three stars and offer room service, ensuite bathrooms, daily cleaning, a desk or table, and Wifi. This is a standard hotel experience that most travelers expect unless they're on a strict budget." Four Kachinas did not offer room service, a desk or table, and the WiFi was continually intermittent through our stay. When we tried to watch TV, it buffered because of the slow WiFi, and then when we selected something it wanted us to download and sign up for an app. We needed to run the hot water in the bathroom for a long while for it to heat up; the hot water heater is presumably shared with the other rooms and en suites in the complex. Finally, there was no mini-fridge in the room, so we couldn't bring home leftovers, and anyone needing to store refrigerated medication would be out of luck. The room we selected, the Zia, was cute and decorated eclectically in a Southwest theme. It had a very solid king bed, two sitting chairs, a closet for storing clothing, and a large shower. Four Kachinas offers a breakfast in the morning from 8am-9:30am, which includes bread selections, fruit plates, cereal, and a hot dish. The morning we tried the breakfast the hot dish was a vegetarian black bean and tortilla strata and one link of chicken sausage. Neither my husband nor I cared for the breakfast and we opted to eat out the second morning we were there. Overall, a cute room but not much in the way at all with amenities or even basic services (a refrigerator, WiFi, hot water, a table or desk, etc). Perhaps others will have a different experience, but at almost $300 a night we'll opt to stay elsewhere next time.

I get some dogs are barkers but you put dog rooms elsewhere and have contact info incase barking occurs. Restaurant reception was pushy they didn't want to serve us because they were closing in 30 mins. They had 7 tables of people in the restaurant. The waiter was excellent and the food was as well. One star because your only as good as your word. No one took accountability for their actions even when they were confronted by their coworker. A "I'm sorry" and "let me see how we can fix this" goes along way.
