This is a fun visit into the home of some avid collectors of Mexican art. It's free with just suggested donations that go to charity. It is literally the home of a couple who have lived in Mexico for 50 years and collected tons and tons of art. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but boy oh boy will you'll love it once you get inside. To see the pics of the transformation of this property to what it is today is eye opening. It's a beautiful home/museum and well worth your time. I visited on Oct 10, 2020. My guide told me that they offer tours at 10am, 11:30am and 1pm daily. If you have a large group and want to visit outside of these hours, you can call to see if a guide would be available. The guides are volunteers and tips are appreciated. The admission price to tour the casa is $100 pesos / $5 US (at the time of this post). The collection is mind blowing. I would definitely visit again. read more

If you are in the area or going to or back from Chichen Itza, you MUST visit this!!! It's a private residence open for visitors through extremely knowledgeable guides. So much Art! This is a collection from the last 4 or 5 decades by a couple who have opened it up to supervised tours. I shouldn't admit this, but we just drove in and rang the doorbell, while they have 5 scheduled tour times, someone greeted us and accommodated our group. Our guide was one of the most knowledgeable people in the culture and art of Mexico I have ever experienced. In addition of guiding us through selected rooms of thousands of pieces of art, from furniture to figures, to mosaics to paintings, from the backgrounds of the many languages and people of Mexico, you could also ask about any piece of art and he would provide information about the artist, how it became part of the collection, and what the artists intend or the political/cultural significance. You could go back many, many times and it would be like a new experience. I am definitely going back again. I also wanted to visit the cemetery on the other side of this large historic and authentic Yucatán village, but I ran out of time. I plan on staying in the village next time so I can focus on this museum as well as exploring here more. read more

This is a spectacular private mexican arts and crafts collextion that should not be missed!

My experience at Casa/Museo de Arte Popular Mexicano Casa de los Venados (Valladolid, Yucatan, Mexico) was one of the worst I've ever had. Both the person at the front desk, as well as the owner, Mr. John Venator, were extremely rude to us, and we were verbally and physically abused by him, to a degree that I had never experienced before in my life. At the entrance there is a sign saying that they take "donations" worth of $100 (Mexican pesos) or US$5, to go in. I was there with my sister and her kids, and since she's an art teacher, and my nephews are middle school, and college students respectively, we inquired if some kind of discount was available for them. The person at the front desk treated us extremely disrespectfully, claiming that if we had no money we should not be trying to visit the Casa/Museo. First, this is, by no means, an adequate way of treating a visitor. We could afford the so-called "donation", but it is a general custom in Mexico and internationally to provide with discounts for school kids, teachers and the elderly. Second, donations are supposed to be voluntary, therefore if they are mandatory they should be called "entrance fee" or the like. This is telling us the the Casa/Museo IS NOT paying taxes for the charges they make, thus they are breaking Mexican law. After this encounter, we were very upset, and we demanded to have a word with the owner to let him know about the terrible treatment we were receiving, which was refused at first. We insisted, and made our way to the main room where the owner was hanging out. When Mr. John Venator realized we were there, he started yelling and cursing at us in front of other visitors. He yelled at me a long list of profanities, including some making a point of me being a woman (B***, C***, etc.). He also yelled that we had to leave and that we were not welcome at that place, and threatened us to call security, and then of releasing a couple of Doberman dogs he kept in the back yard. Please keep in mind that me and my sister are two ladies of 50-something years old, and we were with two kids of 14 and 18 years of age, and we were just demanding to be treated with respect, and nothing else. After this we left the place, and fortunately we decided not to let these horrible persons ruin our vacations, so we took it lightly and moved on. Nonetheless, these happenings are being taken to the proper authorities, and we are hoping some measures will be taken by them. We recommend NOT TO visit this Casa/Museo. If it's all about the money for them, they should not have a place like this, and at least they should be paying taxes. read more
