This cooking class was absolutely dreamy. The day starts off at a local market in Roma, moves onto a cooking portion at Casa Jacaranda and ends with a lovely lunch of all the prepared dishes. All throughout you're learning about Mexican history, the culture and of course, the food. Plus, the dishes you help create are crazy delicious and satisfying. Alberto was also such a welcoming, generous and fun host/instructor. The whole day felt like you are cooking with a friend. Definitely an unforgettable experience, and I cannot wait to be back for another session. Would highly recommend!

Incredible! 10/10 would recommend. I came to CDMX on a solo trip and this experience has changed my life in a very positive way. We learned so much about the Mexican culture and cuisine in one day! We had an amazing crew from all around the world and enjoyed a day of cooking, history, storytelling and laughter. Sharing our meal at the end of the day was a very rewarding and special moment for us all. Book with casa jacaranda!!

I was visiting CDMX with my mom and thought a cooking class would be a great activity for us. It was AMAZING! I let him know in advance that I was vegan and another girl was vegetarian; Alberto had us alter the recipes so we could eat what everyone else was eating which I was so appreciative for. I didn't feel like I was missing out in the slightest. We met Alberto outside of the market where he took us from stall to stall explaining the various products used in traditional Mexican food and gave us samples of various items. As we walked back to start cooking, we stopped at a traditional tortilla stand to watch the process and sample the goods like locals do. That alone could have been an experience in itself that I would have paid for. We then went back to his home, the gorgeous Casa Jacaranda, where it was professionally set up for us to cook tamales, adobo, salsa, traditional rice, and more. As we cooked, Alberto explained the chemistry and the history behind the dishes. His love for cooking and passion for food is obvious, and it was really interesting to learn how traditionally things are done and how food is a fundamental staple in family dynamics. We were a class of eight and we each took turns chopping, grinding, frying, etc. It was a fully immersive experience and then we all gathered upstairs to eat the meal, complete with beers and mezcal shots (which Alberto explained the process of making). By then, we'd all spent so much time together that the conversation was relaxed and fun. The food we had prepared was delicious. Again, that experience alone is something in itself I would have been entirely happy to pay for. We left with full stomachs, a lot of laughs had, and recipes to take home and recreate. And they are actually recipes I feel confident I can recreate - nothing too onerous. To say that I highly recommend this experience would be to sell it short. I can only say that whenever I'm back in CDMX from now on, I'll be visiting Alberto and Casa Jacaranda again!

This is a blast. It's a great way to learn about Mexican culture, food, and history, while walking through a local market and then cooking the dishes with the instructor and his assistants. I only wish I'd brought another piece of luggage to bring back more items from the market we visited. We've already made some of the dishes at home from the class and will be cooking more of them. The day included a trip to market, cooking lessons, a multi-course meal, dessert, and a tasting of tequila, mezcal, and sotol. It was fantastic.

Well, I had totally different expectations of the actual experience and my perception of what it really was. I was told to meet Alberto and Jorge on the corner of Campeche and Medellín by the Medellín market, I thought, that is odd for a cooking class, but as told I went and meet them, right on time they where expecting the group for the "experience of the day". 2 American girls from NY, a couple from Mexico and Russia and myself. When they begin to explain to me that we where going to go to a tortilleria that makes tortillas the old and proper way and then we will be shopping by the market everything we needed for the cooking class, then I understood why they call it an experience instead of just a cooking class. The term "Farm to table" just doesn't describe fully what these 2 guys had plan for us. It all begin at the tortilleria, we got inside the back and got to see the whole process of how a corn kernel becomes a Tortilla by the old ways of nixtamalization. The smell, the machines and the people that work there combined with the explanation of Jorge and Alberto were amazing. After buying some Masa to make tamales we left to the market to start shopping the rest of the ingredients. First we stop by "El yucateco" the guy from Yucatan he specializes in everything related to typical Yucatan culinary treasures from ingredients of the area to already prepared salsas and dishes, the stars were all kinds of forms of habanero and axiote. We move on to the fresh fruits and vegetables, I realized there were some beautiful Zapote negro that I haven't seen for a while and I told Jorge and Alberto that we should get some and try with our friends from NY. They agreed and they even change the desert that was planned for a delicious zapote desert. After shopping and trying lots of kinds of fruits , vegetables, chile's, moles, dairy products and meats we head to the beautiful Casa Jacaranda to start the cooking class. Let me tell you that I'm Mexican, I been living a few blocks away from Medellín market for a few years and go often shopping there, after going with Jorge and Alberto, it changed the whole way of how I appreciate the market and the way I do my shopping. By the time I got to the house and realized how beautiful the set and setting was, we were already feeling like a group of old friends just hanging out at casa jacarandas kitchen.. I wouldn't like to spoil the rest of the experience to you so the rest you will have to live for yourself, what I can tell you is that it was the best culinary experience I had of Mexican cuisine (remember I'm mexican) Jorge and Alberto shared some amazing recipes from their families and in a great way show us how to make them, from shopping to chopping to cooking and finally to taste them. All these complemented by great music, amazing tequila and mezcal with an easy going vibe. Don't miss the opportunity to have the Jacaranda experience.

Incredible day and well worth the cost. We found out about this from a friend. I had seen her beautiful pictures on Instagram and called her before our trip. She couldn't say enough about it. So, I booked it for my wife and I. We met at the mercado and Beto gave us a wonderful tour including many samples and a great history of the place. We then had a lazy walk to the actual class. Along the way, we stopped at a very traditional tortilla factory and had a great time learning their techniques and joking with the owner. Casa Jacaranda is a beautiful setting and the kitchen was great for teaching. There were around eight in our group and everyone had a great time and had plenty of opportunity to participate, prep and cook. When everything was ready we had a great late lunch with margaritas on the stunning roof. I will recommend this place to anyone I know visiting CDMX.

This tour and class exceeded any and all of our expectations. Jorge and Beto were so warm and knowledgable about their culture, their city, and food. The market tour exposed us to flavors and stories that we wouldn't have discovered on our own. The cooking class part of the day was very thorough and approachable. I've already made most of the recipes they shared multiple times! Jorge and Beto, as hosts, were welcoming, encouraging, and passionate. It was a pleasure to take this class and meet them. I highly recommend doing the full market tour and cooking class for the ultimate and authentic Mexico City experience!
By far the BEST experience we had in CDMX. Every detail was perfectly thought out and enjoyable. Truly so beautifully done and we had so much fun while learning so much. The food was so amazing too! Chef Ana is a superstar. The staff working behind the scenes were perfect. Do yourself a favor and book this immediately. read more

Their cooking class is a must do! Well worth the cost and a great value! I learned so much about Mexican culture and history--so much more than just a cooking class. And the experience cooking in their beautiful kitchen, and then enjoying a long leisurely, multi course meal together was amazing! Such warm, welcoming, skilled, knowledgeable staff. read more

One of the best cooking classes we've ever done! We learned so much about Mexican cuisine and ingredients during the market tour and then had a fabulous day in the kitchen. We felt taken care of all day and were offered beers, water and snacks all day. It was definitely an immersive experience. We cooked the most incredible dishes in the most beautiful kitchen. The highlight was the green mole tamales in banana leaves that we made from scratch. We would definitely recommend this cooking class to people who love to cook and want to learn more about Mexican cuisine. Thank you for the wonderful day! read more

This was such an incredible experience and it's changed the way I look at Mexican cuisine. My friend and I took the class and had the most memorable and amazing time! The class was so informative, we went to the local Market to buy the ingredients for the day (Jorge and Alberto know all the good vendors and we got a bit of history on local flavors, produce and what's in season!) The market was fabulous, it would have been overwhelming if we had not had this kind of "tour." Then on the see how the corn flour is made for the Tamales (we made Tamales and fish tacos that day). Also a really amazing educational experience! We learned that the art of making Tamales is ancient and considered a World Heritage food! Oh, and also a "super food!" Then back to the Casa Jacaranda! Such a beautiful place! Filled with light and art, very tranquil atmosphere. AND the actual cooking itself was well communicated, clear and very hands on! We each get a part of the task and all watch, then try it out so we are really learning! Last but not least, we all go outside to the terrace and enjoy the meal we made together with some wine or Mezcal! Everyone in our class was very cool and it was a truly international experience! Jorge and Alberto are fantastic people, the Casa is amazing (and easy to get to by Metro!) and the food we made of course was the best in Mexico City! Thanks to them I have a new addiction to Tamales...!!! But I am also learning Spanish so that I can spend more time in Mexico and visit them again! read more

Heard about this class from a friend and signed up at the last minute- luckily there were still 2 tickets available for us. So glad we made this a part of our itinerary! From the market experience to eating our delicious meal on Beto's incredible patio, this was a truly special day. Beto shared so much knowledge, and also made the day fun and interactive by getting to know us too. Highly recommend for everyone- you don't need to be a foodie or an avid cook to enjoy this! read more

What a fabulous day with chef Alberto! This class was a birthday gift from my husband and he scored big points. We started the day at the market learning about the local fruits and vegetables and trying some delicious coffee and cheeses too. Then off to his stunning home to cook up a storm. The class was so fun and informative, we made so many things including poblano mole and tamales. We finished with a delicious lunch on the rooftop including some lovely cocktails and wine. A most wonderful experience and I highly recommend. read more

What an experience! We were expecting a hands-on cooking class, and we definitely got that. But more than that, Jorge and Beto provide a glimpse of many centuries of Mexican food culture. The class starts in the nearby neighborhood market. For anybody that has visited a Mexican market in one of the border towns, the impression here is completely different from what you might expect. This market is clean, well-kept, and well-stocked - much more like some of the great city markets we see in the northeast US. We started at a small storefront by learning about corn and the nixtamalization process, which creates the white corn masa that can then be used to make tortillas, tamales, and other common foods. From there we moved into the market to see and understand the many things that make up Mexican cuisine. These included vegetables, fruits, coffee, peppers, sugar, herbs and spices, cheeses, and meat. After you learn about the foods, it is time to cook. The kitchen is actually in the home of the two chefs in a quiet neighborhood with big trees. The cooking is done at a large countertop with several prep stations and a cooktop at one end next to the home's working kitchen. Our class was the Antojitos, or Mexican Finger Foods, class. We made tacos, enchiladas, tamales, and empanadas. Also, we made a sweet dessert from Mexican pumpkin. We learned to use a tortilla press and make tamales. We also made three types of salsa using three different methods. The food was terrific. Sampling huitlacoche and fried chapulines (grasshoppers) definitely stretched my comfort zone, and I ate each an additional time on the trip. Attendees get to eat the lunch they have prepared on the rooftop garden of the house - perfect end to a busy day. We sampled Mexican wine and mescal, with jamaica agua fresca on the side. Oh, and your recipes are printed in a notebook, along with a number of restaurants, cafes, and bars favored by the chefs. I wish we'd had this list at the start of our trip! Jorge and Beto are great hosts. They know so much about Mexican cooking (and cooking in general). On top of it all, they speak English very well - non Spanish speakers should have no concerns about booking this class. And it is hands-on. You definitely learn how to do it. It's now January here in Maryland; it's cold outside but I am still creating the bright flavors of Mexico City here at home. read more

I am very disappointed in my experience with the team at Casa Jacaranda! We were beyond excited to be doing a cooking class & meal with them this month, but had to unfortunately cancel due to Covid-Life. Even though we were canceling due to an inability to travel because of the pandemic, they noted that we would be charged the cancellation fee. I agreed, but they have still not processed the refund due back to me and at this point, it has been over 3 weeks. Inspite of multiple follow-ups and inquiries, the refund remains absent and they are now not even replying back to my emails. I fully understand that this is a trying time for everyone, but a lack of communication, and having your customers chase after you without a response back, speaks very poorly. read more

WOW! Hidden Gem inside Mexico city. Maybe not so hidden after all the wonderful service and reviews. Gracias Beto y Jorge and our 5 group members for the wonderful experience. We had a full day of non stop fun, shopping (mercado medellin) learning about authentic mexican cuisine, and of course cooking and eating all that we made. We started in the market for 2-3 hours which goes by super fast. Beto was super knowledgeable of all 500 stands inside this "small" market. We got to try spices, coffee, chocolate, cheese, ice cream, and much more! After we walked to a street vendor selling the best tortillas in Mexico City, made the right way. We continued our walk to Casa Jacaranda! Beto welcomed us into his lovely 3 story home and then it began. Everything was ready to go and we dived right in. We started preparing the pork with fresh ingredients to go into the pressure cooker, final product at the end for dinner. We continued to make salsa (green and red) fresh as can be. We moved on to prepare tamales which I got to do most of the work, spreading butter, corn, milk, and some salt and sugar. We prepared the smoker and filled our husks and Beto tossed them in ever so carefully. Next we moved to Sopes. We used the fresh dough from the tortilla vendor Maizajo (delicious) and started pressing and cooking them. We pinched the edges after being cooked over the flame (hot) and let them rest. Beto showed the class how to prepare and we all made our own. Sooo good, I had a few.. We also has CHIPS( lo siento Beto) and guacamole. Next Jorge gave us an amazing lesson on tequila y mezcal. He made us all a fantastic drink with Altos tequila 100% puuuure agave. Mixed with soda water and some passion fruit juice. Excellenté! We also enjoyed this refreshing beverage and I do not even drink alcohol.. well maybe once in a blue moon. We have had so many small bites and appetizers and now we are ready for dinner? Don't worry, I can eat! We were walked up to the 3rd story rooftop where it was perfect weather and a beautiful table was set. We enjoyed our marinated pork cooked with onions (very special taste) with tortillas (taco) paired with red wine for everyone and all the fresh salsa, beans, crema that you could enjoy. After the lovely rooftop dinner, we had a birthday celebration for a lovely lady in our group. Excellent postres and of course the wonderful ice cream from the market. It was hard for us to say goodbye as this was the best experience we have had in our lifetime! My first time in Mexico and this is a must do to everyone! Thank you so much for everything Beto y Jorge. Love, Debora & Taylor read more

My daughter and I enjoyed a wonderful Saturday in Mexico City cooking at Casa Jacaranda. Our day began with a tour of Mercado Medellin where we sampled a few items and learned about the ingredients that would be used in our menu. After the tour we walked to the Casa to start cooking. Mole is a complex dish and everyone was involved in the preparation and cooking. We learned the proper way to prepare this delicious dish, along with some additional sides and salsas. When it was all done, we sat down to enjoy the fruit of our labor in a beautiful outdoor garden. Beto and Jorge are wonderful and knowledgeable. They explained everything clearly and shared many personal anecdotes. Beto and Jorge's were great hosts and their easygoing humor made our day an unforgettable experience. read more

Casa Jacaranda Great Experience!! My wife loves cooking so I thought the Casa Jacaranda experience would be the perfect gift for her, and it exceeded our expectations! Beto and Jorge are amazing hosts they make you feel welcome and right at home from the first minute. The experience starts with a visit to an old school tortilla factory (tortilleria). This tortilleria differs from others since they make their own flour. By using their own flour the taste of the tortilla is totally different something you will notice later on! After the tortilleria the group goes to Mercado de Medellin, Casa Jacaranda is a big promoter of the Merado, the Mercado is great they have stores with top notch things for foodies, excellent dairy products, coffee, etc... For me the best was this Yucatan food place that has the most amazing salsas, I strongly recommend the mango habanero one, it goes well with everything. After the market you finally go to Casa Jacaranda a beautiful Colonia Roma house that has been renewed and decorated by Beto and Jorge. Different from other similar cooking classes that I have taken this one is really hands on, Beto and Jorge give directions but the guests cook everything, that day we cooked, some guacamole as appetizer (guacamole and chapulin tacos) the most amazing tamales, fish "al pastor" and flan. I really enjoyed preparing the tamales, it was really fun and I always had in mind that tamales were a really hard thing to do, but Beto's and Jorge´s directions made it really easy, also I'm not a very big fan of tamales but I will say it again the tamales were amazing! After everything is ready you eat in a very comfy rooftop, that day we had to go inside since it started to rain, but the rainy afternoon was the perfect setting for mezcal and tequila. We had a great afternoon just drinking and talking with Beto and Jorge and the other guests, good food, good drinks made the perfect environment so it felt like we have known each other for ages. Casa Jacaranda is an amazing experience for locals and foreigners that want to get a taste of Mexican food and vibrant Colonia Roma. read more

History
Established in 2014.
