This place is the genuine article. Real authentic Mexico through and through. Puerto Escondido, unlike many Mexican beach towns, has forbade the construction of the sprawling resorts; the monstrosities that have ruined the Yucatán peninsula and Costa Rica. They have passed Federal preservation laws to protect its shoreline and quaint village roots. This was one of two hotels I stayed in and I will post a review of the other shortly. If you want to relax and immerse yourself in the México of 40 years ago, give this gem a try.

After our swim we headed to the restaurant/bar and ordered beers for our room and the bartender put in a large bucket with ice and gave us an opener. Also ordered a shot of Mezcal and the best shrimp cocktail ever. 4 stars just because furniture could use an update. Hoping the rest of our visit is just as good.

I booked through Airbnb. They failed to inform me that there was ongoing construction right next…read moredoor and it wasn't until I asked that they told me they were moving me to another hotel. They essentially chose another hotel and room to give me without consulting me first or allowing me the opportunity to choose whether to stay with them or not. Complete lack of transparency, communication, and respect. The room they gave me was entirely different from the one I booked. They have rated me as "moody" on Airbnb for not being happy with what they chose for me. Additionally, there were many games they were playing, including asking to refund me in cash so as not to be impacted in their ratings on Airbnb, and making up stories about illnesses as a reason for their failings (they have cancer and eye surgery and other outrageous stories). Stay away, they are no reasonable people.

You can't really walk around you have to take taxis everywhere. It's also the hotel with the fabulous Espadin restaurant so that is a big plus. It is a great idea for a hotel, and mostly well developed, though with some important unaddressed issues. It is located inside a gated compound with an exclusive access to an impressive Pacific beach. As opposed to the Escondido Hotel, Terrestre does have a nice beach club, but it is mostly immersed in the ecosystem of the dunes behind the beach. That is its strength, because that back part has an impressive bird diversity and plant and butterflies life, that cannot be more enjoyable. The hotel is designed as a series of pavilions hidden to each other by the dense vegetation, only carved by narrow curvy paths. The long and narrow swimming pool is truly beautiful and pleasant. The hamman, is fun. The restaurant is nice. Food is truly great and service is impecable. The cabins are very beautiful. They are designed so that no air conditioning is needed, with crossing ventilation. It works, as long as it is not raining. They are designed as contemplative stations, where you watch nature, but never see your neighbors. The presence of local craft makes the spaces friendly and with some non modern depth, what is welcoming. Architecturally, the design is a good combination of modern architecture clichés. Nothing original or new for those interested in architecture. A bit of Louis Kahn, mixed with versions of Donald Judd furniture, Barragán doors and use of water and landscaping, and direct elements from Ando's concrete... Some clear architectural design mistakes: 1. Nothing here is accessible to alternative bodily capacities. If you need a wheel chair forget about it. The whole thing seems to be a celebration of youngmess and healthiness. To the extend that no employee looks older than 25. 2. The design is so maintenance-loaded that is hard not to feel sorry by the huge amount of people doing tough decorative work-removing leaves from the paths, placing clean water in the feet washers, removing dead insects from the multiple swimming pools, cleaning the sand from the concrete surfaces... 3. There are significant issues with rain. Water enters the cabins. Staff needs to work under the rain to draw curtains to prevent it from entering the bedrooms, leaks etc. It is kind of painful. Actually the contemplative character of the cabins vanishes when it rains and the view is literally covered by a plastic panel. All the natural eco vibe fades away when plastic takes over. No views, no light and no natural ventilation is any longer available in the rooms. It is like saying that the only nature worth watching and feeling is sunny nature. Being rain a total spectacle in a place like this. 4. No door in the toilet. This is a real issue. In a diaphanous cabin interior, you can hear whatever business happens in the toilet from the entire cabin. A real problem unless you use the cabin on your own. Surprising that this seems not to have been considered trough the design process. Overall, being a healthy relatively young person with capacity to pay this, it is incredibly enjoyable. As an eco-innovative proposal is kind of admirable, but with obvious flaws that anchor it in the XX century, rather than being inventing the XXI.

The area around Zicatela beach is no longer filled with dirt cheap cabañas to rent so people looking to get the most for their money are rewarded for looking elsewhere--particularly those who want a private bathroom and lock on their door (ie not a hostel). El Tucán is one of many hotels around the adoquin which offer great deals. They have a fantastic pool, clean rooms, a roof terrace overlooking the town, all starting at a mere 550 pesos (about $33 at the time of writing). I would have no problem recommending this hotel to friends traveling as a couple or to families. Single people might still prefer the area around Zicatela...

I don't think I could do it justice…read more However, I will do my best ;) First of all, this place is called "hotel rainbow" in Spanish just FYI so you don't have to google it ;) It's a older hotel with incredible architecture. It's looks like a old Spanish mansion built in the side of the cliff facing the ocean & beach. It's very beautiful & has the most incredible jungle garden growing around it with all these concrete steps going up & down and around, like a Spanish fortress or castle. Of course I LOVE it! Arrrrr! lol Looking at it at night, you would think sometime in the night, a pirate ship is going to anchor off shore, and in the moonlight, Zorro & all his pirate kin are going to swim ashore & attack with swords a blazing! LOL I had rented a casita for a month in La Punta, and it was amazing! However, I wanted to stay a couple more weeks bc I was having so much fun & wanted to check this place out, be able to walk back to my hotel room from the bars. I heard that there was a room at the top that you had to climb 5 flights of stairs to get to but, had the most amazing views of the ocean. Well they were right doubly so. The stairs are a bitch & the views are the BOMB! LOL :)) The rooms are simple, nothing fancy or anything, however the beds were super comfy, the ac was cold, showers were giant, the balcony was huge with hammocks & the restaurant on site was very good. There is also a little coffee shop at the entrance to the hotel in a tiny building that is superb. There is no room service up to the top, up the five flights of stairs, you have to go to the restaurant & climb back up with morning breakfast/coffee if you want it in your room & your staying in the top. I made hubby go get the breakfast, especially when he was hung over lol. This hotel is perfectly located in party central on Zicatela beach. Its literally right in the middle of the beach in walking distance to EVERYTHING. It's where all the bars & nightclubs are located. So if your staying on the ground floor/lower floors the noise might be a problem. On the weekends it goes on & on into the wee morning hours. We didn't hear any of that bc we were on the very top ;) The problem was trying to climb 5 flights of stairs at 4am drunk off your ass! LOL :)) The pool is also YUGE & deep! The only deep pool I found in Puerto Escondido. It was amazing, we spent a lot of time in the pool. The first couple days the stairs kicked our ass after about the 5th day we slayed it like Zorro! Arrrr! If your up for climbing 5 flights in the heat daily the top is phenomenal. Even though I thought I was going to pass out a couple times, the views alone are worth it. I'm also pretty sure you can kick back & relax on the 3rd & 4th floors in this unique hotel. We got to know the maids a little while we were there & they let us look in a few vacant rooms, the views were also amazing from the 3rd & 4th floors. However, beware of the ground floor rooms if you are sensitive to noise. There was a very rowdy Piñata pool party that was going on while we were there with outdoor BBQ's & people drinking beer at the pool. The next day there were a couple chicks still asleep by the pool. There was also a LGBT convention/party that took over the last weekend we were there, it was fully booked! Craziest weekend EVER! LOL :)) I would def stay up top again on the 5th floor, we had a blast at Hotel Arcoiris, we totally dig it! Arrrr! Can't wait to return!

The views aren't bad either. The location is pretty centric to all the restaurants and bars at Zicatela beach. Not bad for the price but don't expect a resort type feel. The pool is pretty basic.
