Combi Catracha:1 baleada; 1 catracha!!, Tamal de pollo, pupusa de queso
    Timo F.

*CHEF'S KISS* Cozy and utilitarian ambiance, with a cute tiny bar, very friendly and attentive service. But THE FOOD though! I just stopped in because it was near my barber and I knew that I could satisfy my "2 meal hunger" for relatively cheap. Frankly and honestly, this was the best Honduran food I've ever tasted. I don't say that lightly, I have eaten A LOT of good Salvadoran and Honduran food since I moved to the area in 2007. I've even had homemade pupusas from mothers of my students on a regular basis. I'm normally not a fan of refried beans on my Tostadas or in fajitas, but they used just the right amount, & they were damn good. For once I feel they actually contributed to the taste of the Baleada and Catracha instead of taking away. The food was so good I have finally dedicated the names of these dishes to memory. in the past they never made a big impact flavor- wise, just kind of good, simple Central American home cooking classics. Everything here was absolutely cooked to perfection and the chef knows exactly what balance of ingredients and fillings are exceptionally delicious in texture and complimentary flavors . STANDOUTS: The Catracha & the Baleada: Baleada -- roughly translated - a Honduran (person). Here the tostada is a double fried corn tortilla with refried beans, and crumbled farmers cheese. I have never had a fried corn tostada so decadently crispy-fried. I literally said " oh my gawd" when I took my first bite. The Baleada was soft and pillowy on the inside and was just the right amount of pan-crisp on the outside. The avocado, beans, cheese, egg, and crema just complemented one another, nothing overwhelmed anything else in flavor or texture. Perfect balance.

I ordered three chicken and cheese pupusas, and they were a great size. I was nearly full after the first two. The flavor was on point. My apologies for my photo because I was already halfway through my third pupusa before I remembered to snap a picture. I also tried the corn tamale, which my wife and I enjoyed a lot. On top of that, I ordered a steak taco, which unfortunately didn't make it into a picture either because I ate it too fast. What stood out to me was the "shell." Instead of the usual flour or corn tortilla, it uses the same masa dough as the pupusa, and I really enjoyed that difference. We finished our meal with the nuegados en miel dulce, something I had never tried before. I was glad I did because it was delicious and a great way to end the meal. Overall, the food and experience were excellent. If you are like me and rely on Yelp reviews to decide where to eat, I highly recommend giving La Casita Pupuseria & Market a visit. Freezing, I walked along 11th street on a Tuesday evening searching for Benito's Place. An old…read morefriend had suggested it but..I couldn't find it. I walked a little back and forth, but.. no. Across the street, I saw another Mexican restaurant on the corner, but it looked closed, or even shut down. Maps told me it should be there. Looking across the street my eyes were drawn to the second floor, and a series of neon lights for a tarot card reader and psychic. Taking this as a sign, I crossed. That's when I found Benito's and realized that it's neon sign was out. Walk too fast and you might miss it. A narrow door aside a bay window lit from inside. It's a small place with a warm, cozy feeling. Benito's is very much a neighborhood Central American restaurant, but FYI: no alcohol. Started with guac and chips, usual fare, delicious but nothing that singled it out. I ordered the Pollo a la Plancha and it was rather good. The chicken was grilled through but not tough, it still had moisture and you could cut it. Rice, greens, etc. and the small 2oz solo of black beans, all standard fare. The corn tortillas were interesting, not your usual thin tortillas, so it took my mind a moment to consider what I was holding. It had the thickness of a pancake, maybe a sope base, and reminded me of thick, handmade tortillas when you don't have the press. Curiously, the tortillas were not the same that my friend got with his Mole Poblano, which were thin. Granted, it was a cold Tuesday evening, but in two hours only two other individuals came in to eat. Seems like they do brisk take away business. I expect on a warmer night with higher foot traffic this place fills up quickly. The service was great, did not want for anything. We were served with two containers of sauce, green and orange. Ostensibly green chili, and habanero, I did not learn specifically however. When I dine in DC I can't help but confront the blunt question: Was it worth it? Yeah, it's good food, good people, and a good place. You'll feel comfortable there and leave full. But the price of dining out is too damn high, and this meal is on the higher side of what, ten years ago, would have been $15. I fear that prices will continue to be pushed higher and places like Benito's might disappear, so get over there because the food excellent, the people are nice, and it's just a warm space to hang out for an hour or so talking to an old friend.
