Freezing, I walked along 11th street on a Tuesday evening searching for Benito's Place. An old friend had suggested it but..I couldn't find it. I walked a little back and forth, but.. no. Across the street, I saw another Mexican restaurant on the corner, but it looked closed, or even shut down. Maps told me it should be there. Looking across the street my eyes were drawn to the second floor, and a series of neon lights for a tarot card reader and psychic. Taking this as a sign, I crossed. That's when I found Benito's and realized that it's neon sign was out. Walk too fast and you might miss it. A narrow door aside a bay window lit from inside. It's a small place with a warm, cozy feeling. Benito's is very much a neighborhood Central American restaurant, but FYI: no alcohol. Started with guac and chips, usual fare, delicious but nothing that singled it out. I ordered the Pollo a la Plancha and it was rather good. The chicken was grilled through but not tough, it still had moisture and you could cut it. Rice, greens, etc. and the small 2oz solo of black beans, all standard fare. The corn tortillas were interesting, not your usual thin tortillas, so it took my mind a moment to consider what I was holding. It had the thickness of a pancake, maybe a sope base, and reminded me of thick, handmade tortillas when you don't have the press. Curiously, the tortillas were not the same that my friend got with his Mole Poblano, which were thin. Granted, it was a cold Tuesday evening, but in two hours only two other individuals came in to eat. Seems like they do brisk take away business. I expect on a warmer night with higher foot traffic this place fills up quickly. The service was great, did not want for anything. We were served with two containers of sauce, green and orange. Ostensibly green chili, and habanero, I did not learn specifically however. When I dine in DC I can't help but confront the blunt question: Was it worth it? Yeah, it's good food, good people, and a good place. You'll feel comfortable there and leave full. But the price of dining out is too damn high, and this meal is on the higher side of what, ten years ago, would have been $15. I fear that prices will continue to be pushed higher and places like Benito's might disappear, so get over there because the food excellent, the people are nice, and it's just a warm space to hang out for an hour or so talking to an old friend. read more

I've only ordered this to go using the Uber Eats app, which I wish allowed the option or better description of the items, including the various sauces packed with the order, because although generous, the 2 types of sauces provided are too spicy for me! Of the dishes I've had: champurrado (yum, except not securely packaged for delivery); chips & salsa (the salsa did not agree with my tummy); sopes carnitas (pork chunks were more fat than meat); tacos fritos de pollo (super dry despite the salad that's lauered on top -- needs sauce!), and the baleadas, my favourite is the baleadas sencillas (good portion, nice flavour, perfect texture). read more

I stopped by Benitos Place because it was the first place I saw after leaving a local bar. This small restaurant has a homestyle, family-owned vibe. Speaking of homestyle vibe, I will say that the waitress working during my visit provided excellent service. She was very friendly and provided a few recommendations to get me oriented. For my dining pleasure, I went with a cheese pupusa and the seafood soup. First, I'll say that you will receive a generous portion of soup with various bits of seafood (clams, mussels, shrimp, and bits of fish). The soup was about $23, which I thought was fair for the area. Unfortunately, I found the soup to be a bit bland. However, that was not a big deal because the restaurant has several delicious varieties of hot sauces. To be honest, I did not have an issue with the blandness of the soup. However, I was a bit disappointed that the mussels had a bit of very old/fishy taste. After having one mussel, I decided it wouldn't be worth it to have the rest. Interestingly, the other seafood bites in the soup were fine. Although the service was great, which is the main reason this review is 3-stars instead of 2-stars, I do not think I'll visit in the near future. read more

Benito's is one of my new favorite places in DC. It's located in Shaw and offers no frills, just excellent food for cheap. Their baleadas are insanely delicious and so are the Honduran fried tacos. The entire menu is under $20 so you can really grab a deal. It looks like they now offer online ordering too if you want to pick up. Service is fast and attentive, they can easily split up checks by item. I will definitely be back! read more

I visited Benito's Place with a group of about 7 people. The restaurant is small but we were able to get a table. They have a pretty robust menu. I got the tacos Fritos Hondurenos. The fried tacos were delicious and I enjoyed the toppings on them. The pricing at the restaurant is definitely better than going to other restaurants in DC. Service was also quick. I suspect this restaurant got good rating because of the volume of food they serve. Inordered chilli rellenos that were cold! The dishes were differently prepared than what you would get in a Mexican restaurant (well the American version) reflecting the fact that this is a Honduras restaurant. The service was decent and staff paid attention to their customers. The ambiance is what one would expect in a hole in the wall restaurant catering to the local population. I suspect they use highly processed food -- although I ate very little carb, my glucose level spiked about 3 hours later amd stayed high for about 4 hours. This is something I always experience when I consume food with MSG or nasty preservatives. read more

My wife and I recently got takeout on a weeknight from Benitos Place and had a fine experience. Our order was delivered on time and everything was warm. Benitos did a fantastic job with their salsas, with the salsa verde and the salsa rojo both having great heat and flavor. We split the pupusas, which were good with a lot of melty cheese. My sopas started off extremely good, although I tired of the cream and the dairy by the end. I tried the baleadas and they tasted like so-so quesadillas. I have been coming here for years to send money to family back in Mexico, and I rarely jad the opportunity to eat in the restaurant. Thelma the Owner is the one who I've been dealing with all of these years and they have simply been awesome with my transactions. Today was the day when I did actually have the time to sit down and enjoy lunch in the restaurant. I had tried popusas many years ago and they were good with no stomach problems afterwards. I thought I would order the same thing again, and this time I added the cabbage to the popusas. You also need to add some spicey salsa which I didn't know before. The popusas was so good, I ordered a second one to take home with me. They were served hot and more delicious than my popusas experience years ago. This is a great place! read more

Best pupusas that I've ever had! Another fellow Yelp Elite recommended this restaurant to me and it did not disappoint. Highly recommend ordering their pupusas (any flavor) as they were my favorite and a big size for the price. Also enjoyed the slaw and dipping sauce it came with. Benito's place is very affordable. In addition to 2 types of pupusas, I got their Mole Poblano and Baleadas. I did not like the Baleadas because the cheese tasted too stinky for me, like a goat cheese. The Mole Poblano was good and the beans and rice it came with were well seasoned. I wish they gave more chicken in the dish or offered a cheaper vegetarian option without the chicken. It was raining so I ducked into Benito's to order a pupusa takeaway while the rain passed. I had the bean and cheese and loroco and cheese pupusas, in addition to chips and queso. It's very small space so be prepared. The service for ordering was quick. I enjoyed the bean and cheese, pupusa, but was not a fan of the loroco pupusa. I also expected them to be a little softer. I could blame that on the 20 minutes in between picking them and eating, although I did toast them prior to eating. The cheese dip was orange and felt plain to me. I added some salsa to it for added flavor and texture, and much needed spice. Overall I would go back for the cheese and bean pupusa. The prices were very affordable. read more

I got steak baleadas and a reveultas pupusa. The total was about $16 if I remember right. It was quite a filling and delicious meal. The baleadas were well-crafted, with plenty of meat and avocado in the filling. The pupusa, packed with meat and ripe for saucing, was also excellent. I would recommend one or the other, unless your appetite is particularly mighty. Glad I visited in person rather than ordering online. Location was in a safe neighborhood. Highly recommend to people craving Tex Mex/Mexican since there isn't much else out here. Food is authentic. The food here is excellent! My friend and I were trying to go to Chaplins but it was closed so I went on yelp and saw this place was close by. It's a small place and there's 1 table outside. Want to start off by saying the staff is amazingly friendly; super nice, clearly family-run, and just trying to serve good food. Really appreciate them! I got my order to go, and started with a loroco and cheese pupusa. I'm still not 100% sure what loroco is, and honestly the taste didn't super stand out. The pupusa overall was decent; good flavor, but I don't think the takeout did any favors, as it got a bit soggy rather than the crispiness the char would otherwise indicate. I also got the pepian stew. My first time having this, and it was really interesting. Huge chunks of meat on bone, but it was unfortunately not super tender and had decent amounts of fat on it, which made for a rather difficult eating experience. The root vegetables in the stew were super yummy, but the flavor also wasn't super powerful in any way. Just overall pretty mild, despite the aggressive coloring. I ordered the Caldo de res (beef soup with vegetables) and punch tea (an assortment of fruits in a tea). This was the most comforting meal for a cold day. Being from LA, south central to be specific we have a lot of Salvi restaurants (also Mexican, Honduran, etc.) The Salvadoran restaurant options looked surprisingly dire in DC but Benito's Place definitely had options that are/or similar to Salvadoran cuisine.
