I liked it so much that I came here again with friends a very short time after my first visit (and we saw a much larger jazz band). Jo Bar is physically attached to Papa Haydn, and is under the same ownership. Despite this, Jo Bar has its own food menu, but both share the same dessert menu. This means that you can get any of Papa Haydn's legendary desserts here. I made a reservation ahead of time, and was seated at the best table in the house for seeing the bands perform. The space is small, so some of the band will invariably be tucked in the area next to the entrance door, so be aware of this. It wasn't a huge detriment, but can be depending on where you're specifically seated. The only negative is that finding parking is a real chore. There is street parking, but most streets are very full in the evenings. I wound up parking in a parking garage several blocks away. I'm really looking forward to my next visit. Jo Bar is a GREAT place to enjoy great live music, GREAT food, GREAT service, and truly spectacular dessert.

Here is a note I wrote about my first blues dancing experiences. The details and experiences,…read moreemotions and feeling all stemmed from the incredible people in the Portland blues dancing community. It all started at a house dance party. "Thank you. It's been about three months now and it's getting better all the time. I started my blues dancing "adventure" on a whim one night after being invited to a house party. I remember talking with the guy who was walking with me asking him if he knew anyone here. "Nope." was his simple reply before grabbing a random girl and assuming a very close stance and proceeded to have what my Irish Dancing-acclimated brain could only describe as a "hot and sensual" dance. I danced a couple times initially with Alana, and after watching for a half dozen songs, I nervously asked a complete stranger to dance. ...words like clumsy, awkward, painfully uncoordinated, and outright embarrassing spring to mind when I think of that dance. The look on her face sort of supported my self-assessment, but she was kind. :) Then later that evening while putting peanut butter on bread, I bumped into Karen-Maria. By some natural puppy-dog-like-nature I have, she decided that my nervous perplexity was cute, or something otherwise redeemable. She spent some time making me less awkward and for the rest of the night, I only did badly, instead of horribly. :D I do remember watching the sun rise off the front deck while munching on chocolate chip pancakes and some kind of asparagus/cheese/ham scrambled eggs. It was the culmination of a great experience. There was none of the typical drama you'd expect from a bunch of random people showing up at a house, no one was getting trashed and becoming a pain to deal with, and for the most part, everyone were a real kick to be around. And so I went to Tuesday Blues a mere couple of days later... and subsequently forgot everything Karen-Maria had shown me. But the lessons at the start of the night ended up being a fairly significant help. I remember by the time the dance started, I was talking with random strangers and even getting some shadow of "my dance" on. I think one of the reasons I like dancing with the new Follows now so much is that I remember how immensely helpful and comforting it was to be dancing with someone who offered advice and didn't take the dancing too seriously. Those first three weeks of Tuesday Blues were definitely an uphill battle; but I remember standing there with Rachel in a closed stance and I decided to stop worrying if every move worked or not. I sort of focused out and just listened for the music and how I was connected to my partner. I was finding myself being able to convey to her where and how I wanted her to move; we weren't just dancing together, she was actually following my lead. My lead! ... my lead?? But my lead is awkward and hard to determine and muddy and... "wow, good dance"? Serious!? SWEET! It's been about three months now (my first house party was Kelly's house on Alana's birthday), and I just grow more fond of this community. Something inherent with Blues dancing is that when you are in the music, that's what matters; the connection and the music. No one really seems to be competing with each other, and it seems to me that the community as a whole appreciates the leaps and advancements that individuals achieve; and experimentation is not only accepted, it's highly encouraged. I put a Follow in the office chair and danced her around the floor from the chair, and at the end a got a couple accolades for creativity. That wouldn't happen in Irish Dancing; let alone be possible. :/ There's frankly a few Follows I am simply too intimidated to dance with right now because I know my skill and current leading style are diametrically opposite of their follow style; but it's not a bad thing because it gives me something to aspire for, to grow towards. Also seeing how some pairs just ... become... is also another inspiration. I remember watching a pair dance and frankly, it wasn't just a dance, it was a damn spiritual experience; seeing two people move so entirely for one another. That is the dance I want to have, that dance that makes everyone watching go "Holy sh...." I'm not entirely sure why I started writing this and frankly it's almost 5am and I don't know how to really end it. ... there is a sort of personal pleasure being able to answer "So, what'd you do last night?" with something along the lines of "Oh, me? I danced with a dozen beautiful women. You?" P.S. Ladies, continue being awesome. It's nice to dance with someone who jumps to with a smile and enthusiasm. And grab those new Leads, they appreciate the encouragement too. :) "

At the bar, you can get different things to include beer, cider, mixed drinks, and even food. The bathrooms are located on the second level, which is kind of odd. The dance floors are bouncy, which was a lot of fun.

I traveled from Seattle to Portland by train and bus on a day trip, in order to attend the Cultura event on May 10, 2026. I bought a to-go vermicelli entree at Van Nien Temple ( https://vannienvegan.com/ ) earlier in the day. It was a Sunday and Van Nien Cafe closes down at 4pm (hours 10 - 4pm) so I planned to save the entree for my late dinner after the concert, because I did not feel hungry before going to the event. The security rejected me, telling me that 'outside food could not be brought in, you can either discard it or finish it outside' (it was not listed on your policy, and I am not the type of person that would bring outside entree to eat in a music venue). Not wanting to waste the food, I was forced to eat the entree on the street while I was not hungry. I personally feel it is quite insulting, and the venue and their security staff could have done a better job to accommodate event goers who don't have a vehicle to store the food.
