Of the three though, I would consider my stay at Macquarie Manor to be the best of the lot. This hotel is located in the Hobart CBD on Macquarie Street. It is not at the corner, but a couple buildings away from it and across the street from the Travelodge. Part of the reason why I decided to book this hotel was that it was a boutique heritage hotel. The building was built in 1875 and has Edwardian architecture. It was originally the home of a surgeon and then used as a venue of Hobart's high society so there is a lot of history in these walls. Upon arriving to the hotel for my stay, I checked in at the lounge area in front of the dining room. The hotel's dining room restaurant is affiliated with Nant, a local whisky distillery. Going back to why I booked this hotel, the other reason was that the rooms are huge. I got a standard room that was over 300 square feet with high ceilings and space for an elegant sofa and table. My room was actually in the annex part of the hotel as an extension was built to expand on the original building. Heading up to my room, I had to go through an annex walkway. It is unheated, so it was quite cold during the winter. The room's bathroom was also a bit chilly, so I would close it to contain the warm air when you turn the room's heater on. The room was the most comfortable one that I stayed in. Mostly because of the size. The room's interior and bathroom still looks rather new like they did a renovation recently. As for the cons, the free hotel Wi-Fi wasn't working well in my room for most of my stay. I had to head into the main building to get a good connection to login. And I was unable to try out the restaurant during my stay as it seemed like they were having staffing issues. It was the winter season, so that was understandable. Still it would have been nice to have been able to stay in and enjoy a steak and whisky dinner here when it was cold out. The Wi-Fi and restaurant issue were minor though compared to the billing issue that I had to deal with after my stay. I pre-paid for the room prior to my stay, but I noticed a double charge on my credit card after I returned back to Seattle. After going back and forth with the hotel about this snafu without success, I contacted the online travel agency I booked the room through to resolve the problem with the hotel. The charge was refunded, but it left a bad taste about my stay here. If there was an issue, I feel it should have been brought up during my stay or upon checkout. Overall, I liked my stay for the most part at Macquarie Manor. The location is great and the size of the rooms plus the historical aspect of the building are key selling points. Though given the billing issue I dealt with, I would recommend booking directly through the hotel's website rather than a travel agency.

The rooms are large, clean and filled with the necessities. The only drawback is the parking associated with the establishment. It is limited and can be difficult due to required 'shuffling'. Rooms are basic, with mini fridge, hanging space and bed. Heaps of accessible power points. Fun 'public space' with bar and coffee machine. Amazingly central location, with pubs, restaurants and retail all close by. Salamanca a ten minute stroll, close to skybus stop 5. Def not a luxury hotel, but loved my stay!

Alabama Hotel is located so close to Woolworths, where I bought my snack supplies from. I parked my car at the 24 hr parking place which was about 5 minutes walk from the hotel. As I walked up the stairs at the hotel, I could see some hanging flamingos and a cafe. The reception desk was located inside the cafe area. Alamaba Hotel also has a balcony with some tables and chairs to hang out at. I was given a handmade soap and a towel, enough amenities for my two days stay. They also prepare free water at the corridor that I could bring to my room. The room was really cozy with a heater, fan, and a working desk. One of the most important things for me is the number of power points that a hotel room has. I comfortably charged my power bank, camera and phone at the same time! I was incredibly grateful for electricity and free Wi-Fi that they provided. The shared bathroom was spotless and most of the time I didn't have to share it with other people. Mind you, it was an off peak season when I was there. Alabama Hotel is an excellent place for staycation around Hobart area and provided a comfortable stay for a budget hotel. It's one of people's favorite places to stay when there's music or food festival in Tasmania. Just make sure to book in advance to secure your spot.

Good god, I have been ruined for hotels forever…read more Last year when I paid a visit to MONA I decided that at some point in the future I would stay in one of the Pavilions. A friend visiting from the US seemed like a good reason to make a trip down to Hobart and luxuriate in what i think is one of the most spectacular parts of the world. Everything about MONA is impressive and the pavilions are no different. We stayed in the Sidney pavilion and it was incredible. We're talking huge bedroom, a huge lounge room with comfortable couches, dining setting, the usual TV and iPod docking stations and... your very own Sidney Nolan on the wall. The Bathroom was over the top, with a huge bathtub overlooking the Derwent river outside and Aesop bathroom products. The outdoor deck overhanging the river was a really lovely way to spend the early evenings, and the "mini" bar was anything but. Seriously, a whole temperature controlled fridge features the entire Moorilla Estate wine selection, the fridge was filled with a number of Champagnes, soft drink and juices. The snack cupboard was extensive too and I suppose if you didn't want to eat dinner at The Source or venture in to one of the excellent restaurants in town, you could use all the kitchen to make your own dinner (I wonder if anyone ever bothers?) The whole experience - off the hook.

It can be a little confusing when you initially arrive at the entrance to MONA as to where you are supposed to go, but after wandering around (and calling the front desk out of confusion, along with jet lag), we realized that the Ether building (i.e. the tallest one on the property) was where we needed to go to check in. The lady at the front was helpful in explaining everything, along with the inclusions of staying (free entrance to the museum - definitely worth utilizing; we only made it through half the museum and now have an excuse to come back) and breakfast at The Source each morning (also a must-do, as the food is delicious). The setup of the pavilions - each uniquely designed with their own layout and alongside the river, a bit off from the main museum grounds - means that you're generally shielded from the crowds that come to visit, although given that the parking lots are close by, you can have folks inadvertently wander up to your entrance (that happened to us a couple times). Mostly, though, the folks staying here can simply relax in peace. Couple that with a guaranteed parking spot (which usually seems to be respected, at least for us), and you have the makings of a successful stay. What makes any of the pavilions so great to stay at is how they are furnished and set up. Each are unique; each are named for someone of regional importance (ours was named Esmond, after an architect of local renown). Since each is different, the exact layout won't apply to each one, but suffice to say that we thoroughly enjoyed the Esmond. It's a one bedroom 'pavilion' that has massively high ceilings, a large TV hanging on the wall, and a sound system controlled by wall panel that really lets you turn up the tunes if you so desire. All the pavilions face the river (some with clearer views than others - the Esmond's is what I would call a partially obstructed view) and have a porch where one can sit and idly enjoy the serenity of the Tasmanian countryside. You have a full kitchen that one can utilize (stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, even a wine cellar stocked with wine from the vineyard on premises) that is quite useful. The fridge has plenty of local treats; we ended up enjoying the local cheeses and salami that were stocked there on Christmas Day, given the lack of open options around. There's a washer/dryer combo next to the bathroom that took us a little time to figure out how to use but came in quite helpful. The bathroom is gorgeously appointed, with a rainfall showerhead in the shower and a large bathtub, replete with Aesop amenities. The bedroom is relatively straightforward, but what I liked most were the blinds that completely blocked out light - it made it very easy to get a good night's rest and provide complete privacy from the nearby walkway. There is a gym in the middle of the row of pavilions that has a small pool and a few exercise machines; it isn't the most complete set of workout equipment by any stretch, but it should get the job done (I stuck to running on a nearby path by the river). The pavilions themselves are gorgeous, but the included items (breakfast, museum entry) plus access to the grounds at all times, even before and after the museum opens / closes, is really nice; we had a great time wandering around the outside exhibits on Christmas Day all alone. At a very reasonable price for what I feel is a near top-of-the-line luxury experience, this is one of those remarkable lodgings that one should make a point of staying at if they make it to Australia. I would absolutely come back again, even if it was purely just to stay on the MONA grounds and disconnect from everything else. Top-notch amenities and top-notch hospitality...you cannot ask for me.

Antiques everywhere... or reproductions for the keen eye. The bedrooms have all the mod cons but still with beautiful period decor. Breakfast is very filling. There is fresh fruit salad, ham, cheese, warm boiled eggs. Cereals, croissants/jam, different breads for toast and tea / coffee.

The Collins is a short stroll to The Waterfront, Salamanca and almost anywhere in central Hobart. It feels more like an independent hotel with a modern feel and a lot of heart, rather than a boutique hotel because there is not a lot of character. They have a nice little cafe to the right of the lobby and there are ample options for food and coffee nearby. Since my suite was directly above said cafe, it always smelled like what was cooking below. Not necessarily bad, but not something I'm used to. My floor also smelled of cleaning product so between the scent of sterility that greeted me upon exiting the lift, and the smell of the dinner special permeating into my room, my stay at The Collins was an olfactory journey that I wasn't expecting. All that said, I have no complaints. The rate was reasonable, the location great as I said and my room big and comfortable. Of all the places I stayed at during this trip to Australia, The Collins is the ONLY hotel that had an iPod dock on the radio in my bedroom so well done on that. The staff was also helpful in making sure I caught my airport bus for my flight back to The States. As an FYI, the hotel rates at the carpark behind the hotel are VERY reasonable and it is secure. If you have a car, don't hesitate to park it here. So to sum up, good value at Hotel Collins. Not perfect, but there are a lot of pluses to make it worth staying here.

They have plenty of bathrooms, and despite Tasmania being chilly the heat and the blankets did the job fine. They're very low on security, but I think the selling point of the place is that they've tried to set up a culture. The owners are very present and took the time to shake my hand on entering, and one gets the sense that this is a place meant for adults who want to be there (whereas you can find some sketchy, fringe-y characters floating around Australia and New Zealand's various hostels). The worst that could be said of it is that people were noisy the last night I was there, but when you pay for cheap accommodation, that's a risk you take. I was happy to take the money I saved and put it towards other things.
