Our travel group had a team dinner here in a comfortable (albeit a bit dark) back area of this really busy Irish Pub. It was only midweek and our guide told us that this place was always packed. There was lots of local energy here, of which we should have stayed longer and soaked it all in. The food and drink was a set menu, but in an Irish Pub, that meant that a burger, chicken parma, or fish and chips were always on the menu. The beer choices were on the light side, in which I should have insisted on a Guinness or a Kilkenny, instead of the local lager. Liked this place. Visited during the day so quiet apart from the local mid afternoon drinking crew! Big wood fire. Some outside dining spaces. They had a waitress set or which was a nice touch. We had meat pie and chips was great and tastie sat on bed of mushy peas which were great. Apparently really busy at night. Pretty close to downtown and would try it again. First things first, New Sydney Hotel might be the best pub in Australia. Big call? Possibly. True? Yes. On a recent trip to Hobart I asked the wise barkeep at Lark Distillery "where's a good pub with a cosy fireplace?" He responded without hesitation "New Sydney Hotel. It's a country pub in the middle of the city." He's not wrong. On a Saturday afternoon we nabbed a seat at the bar with our backs to the fireplace and were left stunned by the incredible beer on offer - from all over Australia and the world, there were craft beers left, right and centre. Pirate Life, Fuggled Porter, Bruny Island Beer and of course, endless Guinness. Not interested in beer? You could ry one of their mulled ciders or wine, or sink a cherry cider (I did and it was delicious.) The real highlight though was the Irish Jam Session that unfolded before our eyes. One by one more and more Irish instrument lovers came and sat down with a large group of other like-minded musicians and just... jammed. The result was a 15-piece band simply playing joyous Irish music. This happens every Saturday afternoon - it is simply too good to miss. It felt a bit like I was in Ireland and I absolutely loved it. We visited in the middle of May 2016. They had a roaring fire which was beautiful! There were 4 of us here. We ordered off the normal lunch meals and tapas menu. The fish and chips was apparently delicious and came with a gorgeous little bottle of malt vinegar. The tapas dishes we tried were the croquettes, beef brisket and fried chicken. All were pretty nice. Tassie has some amazing food and produce and this place really showed it off. Doesn't look like much from outside but it's great spot to visit if you're in Hobart. read more

This is a great pub with lots of local flavor. The chicken parma was DELICIOUS and a huge portion and they let us sub veggies, which was perfect. I was drooling looking at the other tables - at all the creative dishes, like hand-torched waygu. The two criticisms: Stained carpet was yick. And the lemon merengue "soft serve" was unremarkable and way too expensive $14 AUS for a little scoop of sorbet. read more

If you're after a friendly pub with a warm open fireplace on a cold night, look no further. Particularly recommended to travellers who might be on their own in Hobart for the night and looking for somewhere they can get a good meal, something interesting to drink and the chance of decent conversation while seated at the bar, spliced with taking in some great live music. The pub has plenty of character - enough that I was willing to overlook the few 'Irish' touches - a good range of beers and ciders on tap and a vast array of local Tasmanian whiskeys and spirits. On the chilly night I was there they were also selling mulled, spiced wine. The menu is a great mix of pub standards (chicken parmigiana, fish and chips, steaks) with some pretty fancy-looking fare thrown in as well, from what I could see coming out of the kitchen to other diners. It seems to attract a lot of locals, whom the staff know by name and drink, as well as the odd blow-in such as myself, attracted by the sound of the band playing behind its non-descript facade and the whiff of smoke from the chimney. This unassuming pub may be the best kept secret in Hobart. From the outside it looks like your typical Irish pub, right down to the Guinness paraphernalia and the cosy log fire. But after perusing the taps at the bar, (mainly craft beers) and the very good wine list (the Bay of Fires Pinot Noir was great) the real treat is the food. Our group shared starters of the beef cheek croquettes, the fried chicken (Japanese style) and the wagyu beef with bread and dripping with the melty strips of beef rendered at the table. The attention to detail on the plating was good and the theatre of the rendering of the wagyu with the blow torch at the table all added to the experience. The mains, we all had steak, were just as good as the starters, the meat was all cooked to perfection the rib steak was melt in the mouth good and the smoking added to the flavour. The bone at the end was clean. The wagyu came with a heated piece of rock salt that you could put the steak on and the salt would be drawn through the meat to season it from within. It was very clever. The iron steak again cooked to perfection and the mash was super creamy and very moreish. We finished sharing a steamed pudding with a whiskey sauce, whiskey jubes (gummies) which were amazing, milk sauce and a lime froth. All in all an amazing feed, in an old school pub, no tv, no pokies, no jukebox. Priced very reasonably for the quality and finesse in the food, in a mainline capital city this would be a lot more expensive. Staff attentive, friendly and knowledgeable on the menu. Will definitely come back and recommend you give it a go. read more

A lovely pub that I'd love to have as my local here in Melbourne. My better half and I were only in Hobart for two days but we dropped by the New Sydney on both nights. We had an excellent dinner here on our first night in town: We ordered fish and chips and it was by far the best pub meal I've had during my three years in Australia. The chips were served a little tureen of brown vinegar and the ketchup was mixed with HP sauce, just like you'd get in good ole' Britain. And the mushy peas! They were a creamy, sweet pureed dollop of deliciousness and were just perfect with the vinegary, salty meal. The fish was fresh as can be. Great extensive beer list, including some interesting IPA's and a fun band doing 80's covers ("Money for nothing....chicks for free"). A great, homely place. read more

Great pub with a great menu offering all the pub staples plus some interesting seasonal dishes to tempt you. The husband couldn't go past a Parma to compare the Hobart standard to his beloved Melbourne favourites. This one stacked up well! He had it with a pint of beer to wash it down (of which they had a great craft selection). I couldn't go past the fish and chips, served with a bottle of vinegar sauce that was delicious. The side salad was also a cut above the usual as it included some olives and feta cheese - delicious! I washed my meal down with a lovely local Pinot Noir as recommended by the super friendly staff. I also noticed this pub has "philosophy" discussion nights once a month - for kids and adults - which I thought was cool & different!! Better than a room full of pokies if you ask me! I would be happy to call this place my local! If I could give it an extra half a star I would too!! read more

What a great pub. It looks small from the outside but once inside it just keeps going. A great fireplace burns to keep you warm during winter. And enjoy it with some mulled wine or cider. Home away from home anyone? Hasnt been many months I havent stopped in at least once over the last ten years. Beer selection is as good as any in Hobart. Plenty of Tassie craft as well as some special Australian and imported stuff. Prices are on the higher end of affordable but cant argue with the quality. Food matches or maybe even exceeds the beer. Many pubs in Hobart do good food, but not many match the variety on the menu. Standard pub food is good, but the special can be spectacular. Another thing they are known for is the warm environment. Meaning the wood fire in that place is phenomenal so if you about on a clod day, step in and warm your bones by the fire. Live music also a few nights well so check em out for that too. Good selection of beers, good meals. Also a great live music venue. Two things that differentiate this pub from the most of the ones around Hobart: No TV - If I want to watch TV I'll stay at home. No pokies/tab - If I want to get rid of excess money there are far more enjoyable ways to do it. read more

Favourite pub in Hobart. Excellent and great value beers/cider on tap and the food is not your normal schnitzel style pub food (not that there is anything wrong with that) think 'Dagwood Dogs but with slow cooked goats meat' or awesome grilled Wallaby, its serious food but with pub-ease. The fire going in winter with a Stone and Wood pint, deft my favourite place to be. read more

Wow will not disappoint! Looks daggy but filled with goodness! Breath of fresh air for Hobart food - on point.... Wagyu torched beautiful & the lamb main melted in mouth! Service backed up by wonderful Dutch waitress whose knowledge of the food was extremely helpful! The warm apple & ginger cider/mulled wine was great to warm us up as well!! read more

Great little pub with live Music. Pork knuckle was very good. Great beer selection.

Definitely a group pub, friendly, attractive and efficient staff. Food, have yet to find fault, good portions, a varied menu and all on a blackboard which is great as it's a self service bar, so first in best dressed as they say. What's more a decent pint of Guinness to wash it all down. One last thing, what I meant when I said it was a group pub was because it caters perfectly to those heading off to The Playhouse up the road. Bon Appetite. read more
