I began knitting two years ago and love alpaca yarn, and the thought of being able to meet the alpaca that I am knitting from just seemed so cute. Mike was super friendly and very informative. There were 8 total people in our group (our 5 plus a family of 3) and he was engaging with everyone. Our 5 year old grandson started out a bit unsure but Mike was very encouraging and our grandson was able to really open up. What a great experience for kids. The shop is filled with yarn from the alpacas, and they make sure that you have the name of the alpaca as well in case you need more at a later date. I ordered a scarf, at $160, and it's as soft as cashmere thanks to the fact that Swans Island uses only organic soap to wash their wool. The scarf arrived in a gorgeous box with a catalog that looks more like a fine arts exhibit program. The blankets are expensive, about $600 to $1000 as far as I can tell, but they conform to every facet of the idea of an heirloom: something of high quality that you treasure and eventually pass down. It's wonderful to see world-class working being done in Maine.

That said, they carry a respectable variety of classic New England wool knitting yarns -- Bartlett, Harrisville, Peace Fleece, Jaggerspun -- and a few of the trendier luxury yarn lines -- Debbie Bliss and Malabrigo, among others. But what I like most about them is actually criticized by other reviewers. As a male knitter, the thing I despise about visiting yarn stores elsewhere is the constant attention I get. There are stores I have walked out of without buying yarn, never to return, because the staff have stalked me around the store as I browsed as if they're afraid I will snatch a hank of cashmere and bolt for the door. At Halcyon, they nod at me when I walk in and then leave me alone to shop, trusting me to come up to the counter if I have a question. Other shops treat me as a freak or an idiot because I'm a male knitter; the staff at Halcyon trusts that I know what I'm doing. That said, every time I have had a question, the staff have been incredibly helpful and knowledgeable, and every time I visit the area and can make time, I visit Halcyon.
