Getting a seat on a Friday or Saturday requires an early arrival. (And the snug - well named - is usually occupied by regulars). But the combination of friendly service, five well-kept real ales, and the absence of TV and other distractions makes this a beer drinker's heaven. (I had a nice pint of Jennings Bitter on my last visit.) As the website proudly announces, it is the only pub in Liverpool/Merseyside to have appeared in every edition of the Good Beer Guide (which means for over thirty years), which is some accolade. There's a Quiz night on Tuesdays with a free buffet, and a Cribbage night on Wednesdays. Although I've not eaten here, they serve very traditional bar food - sandwiches, snacks, burgers, chilli, curry, a traditional breakfast etc - all with chips. There are always a couple of veggie options, too. If you are short of time, you can ring ahead to order in advance, though it would seem a pity not to linger a bit, here. If you want something different to eat, Liverpool's Chinatown is only a few minutes away. The Roscoe Head can be a little tricky to find: walking up Leece Street, it's on the bit of Roscoe Street on the left, opposite the ruins of St Luke's church, behind the old Post Office. As I dropped in I was sure I was guaranteed a quiet pint as nobody really goes in here not in the afternoon anyway but with it being so small I couldn't get away from the bar maid. Don't get me wrong, lovely old dear who is planning an all inclusive to Turkey this summer but when the conversation is being held over the threshold of two separate rooms you know there is little point trying to continue with the idea of that quiet pint. When you first walk into the Mount you'll find a traditional pub with a very 'local' feel to it. It has a pool room, a smallish bar and the pub itself is split into several rooms. If it's not your local then the Mount really starts to come into its own during the summer months. It's elevated position overlooking a meander in the River Dee makes it the perfect place to enjoy a summer drink.

Outside it has a large beer garden with stunning views over the river common (it's the center of where the river loops) allowing long views all the way to the welsh hills. Another hidden gem. Beers however are not cheap, £2.50 and up. Does have own 'real ales' on pull taps.

With its complete lack of music, quiz machines, fruit machines or drinks you've ever heard of, the pub really is a step back in time. You expect to see buccaneers clustered round the tables muttering darkly or a Navy official to be dropping the King's shilling into flagons. Definitely worth a visit if you look for time travel in a pub, which I do.

However with two floors, the Parkfield has handily served both Liverpool and Everton fans on matchdays which ensures a lively saturday/sunday afternoon and now that Rhubarb has opened next door it seems decent pubs are returning to the Lane once again.

From the outside, it looks like a fairly traditional pub that is reasonably-sized, but when you go inside you realise it opens out into several separate corners and also includes a small upstairs area where the toilets are located, meaning the area it actually covers is even larger than you could foresee from the outside. Around the back there is also a delightful little outdoor drinking area with a selection of wooden benches for drinkers to enjoy what little good weather they may have the luck to experience. The drinks are fairly reasonable (it's an Ember Inns pub so the prices are the usual set prices and offers) but the food represents even better value for money as the Hare and Hounds offers delicious pub classics (and some extras) at very good prices. Can get quite busy of a Friday or Saturday night, but a very pleasant place to enjoy a pint or two.

From the outside, the pub looks quite traditionally designed, if a little dingy, and on entering the pub you will usually be met by several groups of middle-aged men who are no doubt regulars who have been drinking there since they were old enough to buy their own pints. The people in there are generally friendly enough, but if you're looking for a place full of young people then I'd advise you to go over the road to the Birkey. However, if traditional pubs with a bit of character and a range of guest ales on draught are what you look for in a pub rather than how busy it gets of a Friday night, The Crow's Nest could be the place for you.
