Late on a Friday afternoon, the Cass County Justice Center in Harrisonville was completely secured and absolutely nothing was happening, which meant that I could walk the grounds undisturbed and take in the modern four story brick and glass structure that was completed in 2003 in a modern architectural style. It could well be an office building for all the lack of living character. Even though I could not tour the interior, the landscaped grounds and the quiet setting made it easy to appreciate how different this building must be to the historic courthouse a mile away in the center of Harrisonville. That one dates to 1897 and stands out with an Italian Renaissance design and clock tower. Cass County itself was organized in 1835 and named for Lewis Cass, the Michigan statesman and senator, and Harrisonville has served as the county seat since the 1830s when the town was first platted and selected for that role.
