The facility is very large -- the tour kept going and going. It was neat to see it. It started with a short motorized "train" ride which was mostly unnecessary and gimmicky. The tour was almost full, maybe 40 people. Then we had a tour guide walk us through various buildings and explain various things about the sherry-making process. She was not a very good tour guide -- she made mistakes / corrected herself and her English was so-so. If you can afford this large facility, fancy videos, etc you can afford better tour guides. Near the end was a video that was kind of cheesy, but used multiple projection screens in a very cool way. Then we did a tasting of five sherries; they were all pretty good. Overall, the tour at Cayetano del Pino nearby was more authentic, friendly, small-group, and informative.

Then we had a sit down wine tasting of port and sherry wines. I felt the port and sherry wines were too sweet for me, but might be nice after dinner as a dessert wine. I prefer dry wines like a good Chiati. After our wine tasting we shopped in their retail store to purchase some wine and souvenirs. Our tour bus took us back to our cruise ship at the port of Cadiz. The visit was rather short but informative. We first started with an overview of sherry, the different types, how it's made, etc. then proceeded to taste 4 or 5 different types of sherry including an oloroso (my favorite) and a very sweet and dense Pedro Ximenez. We were served some cheese, cured meats and crackers to munch on while we tasted. Even though the tasting pours are not large, these wines have a much higher concentration of alcohol so keep that in mind when tasting especially if you have dining plans to follow that may involve more wine drinking.

We had four different wines and learned about the differences between Ribera and Rioja wines. I have always been a fan of Rioja and we had a delightful that was called Xanum Vinae Rioja. It was fantastic. We had a type of manchego cheese with the first two less aged wines and went on to a stronger cheese once we had two more aged wines. I strongly suggest going to a tasting! It was a great learning and cultural experience!
