I left Castle Craig two years ago, I went on to the aftercare programme which is online and also came back for the reunion this summer. I can only recommend Castle Craig as the best rehab (having been to a couple of others in England) I wish I had come straight here the first time round. But I appreciate that addiction recovery is a journey and most of us relapse along the way. The care here was second to none, thank you Jess, Ross, Duncan and team! read more

I arrived and the detox was hell on earth I dont feel that castle craig are experienced nor sympathetic toward users of heroin they seemed clueless to be honest and the detox is their way or the highway with bupomorphine or nothing I experienced 4 days of hell and in 2 days had received a 2mg of bupamorphine (didn't touch the sides) i advised that previous tries of this were unsuccessful for me and that this didn't agree with me it made me ill regardless of detox or not iv always had a reaction. It took me 3 days to finally receive 10ml of methadone but the 3 days prior I received 2mgs alone. They also use colonidine to take the edge off this is useless its clear its all about costing and you receive the cheapest possible medication, I have received a stronger detox in police custody and more sympathetic. Finally I felt.slightly better once integrated into the community and met my therapist and started the step work and you embrace it but on reflection there's no TV no phones no books outwith what they provide so ofcourse ur stimulated mentally by the step programme because of not there's nothing else at all so its a mind trick and it works because there is nothing else to do or discuss ur days ar 12 to 14 hours of it. Therapy is meant to be a massive part and it should be however therapists focus on step work not psychology and most therapy is group work so individually you dont really receive the direct therapy alot of us require and when you do have ur therapist appts they either cancel or blatantly ignore the days and times given. The community run the day to day saving wages and the money is ploughed into therapists salaries however they are never available they dont keep appointments etc. I had to have medication same time every morning however it was at a time of a lecture and if I did finish early enough there's a team meeting no regard that you are withdrawing and in pain its just tough luck however YOU must be on time. Still i went with it and actually got my head into it feeling positive and doing the work I won't lie it helped a little to feel emotions etc again and learn small skills but its the community other patients who heal you. Then I had a tooth begin to fall out a front tooth hanging by the nerve and the root the pain was unbearable I asked for pain relief and was given clove oil each time I took matters into my own hands and took cocodamol I had in my handbag that they didn't find searching and I didn't know initially I had however I found them early on into my stay and hadn't taken them. Initially I had asked a friend to bring some painkillers they wouldn't and remembered I had 7 pr 9 cocodamol, next morning went for medication received it and was drug tested therapists and even housekeeping staff couldn't have made it more obvious something was going on that day arousing my suspicion more that this wasn't random testing then came the sniffer dog in a select few rooms, it failed to find any illegal substances or the cocodamol but I was asked if I had drugs dropped.off and told them no but I had cocodamol I took for toothache handed the remaining tablets over instantly. From that moment onward I was treated like a petulant child i was supervised packing an overnight bag removed and put into the detox unit with 4 walls as entertainment as well as the parting words of my therapist saying that this was really bad and she would see me the following morning with an outcome but its really bad. The tone the treatment etc etc was humiliating spoken to like a child told that I can have pain relief for toothache they were unaware. After hours stating at 4 blank walls I had enough I wasn't spending 18hours in what may aswell have been a police sell like a criminal and asked to leave I was upset I asked for my belongings etc and I was visibly upset and in pain with my front tooth hanging out. They called in the doctor and head therapist patronising me start to end and gave me strong painkillers paracetamol lol banished me back to the room and asked me to stay not to be silly and leave unsafely etc. Following morning no therapist visits me with an update but a nurse comes in tells me to go back to my normal programme I oblige. Within 1min of entering the building I was chased down and told off for being there and accused of making it up that thr nurse at detox told me to, when they checked and I wasn't lying no one apologised I was again made to wait 1 hour for my medication and banished back to detox then I got called in to be patronisingly informed im being discharged for cocodamol for toothache. They wouldn't allow me to have my phone to arrange to get home etc no numbers no money etc and fpr 5 hours left.me waiting on discharge papers still refusing me the phone incase I left before hand. They then continued to treat me like a silly little girl demean and speak to me in such a condescending tone I blatantly told them I wanted to go home and use. read more

Having been to Castle Craig a few years ago I feel I need to share how my life has changed. From the despair of alcoholism, a broken marriage and debt I went there, scared and broken. I was there for four weeks and the experience was life changing. The trauma I suffered was a part of the problem and my therapist immediately spotted this and helped me work through it. The groups were enlightening and I became fitter and more aware of my mental health. Years on and I am thriving without the need for a drink! read more

It is advisable to avoid this facility due to its inflated prices and exaggerated acclaim. Despite putting forth my best effort, I perceived a lack of reciprocal commitment and patience from the staff, except for Trisha who was my therapist and I must say I got a lot out of our sessions. The food quality at this facility is entirely unacceptable. As someone who follows a Muslim/Jewish vegetarian diet, abstaining from pork is a crucial dietary requirement. Despite clearly documenting this information in my file, which I confirmed, I was inadvertently served pork on two separate occasions. If you're a vegetarian considering this place, brace yourself for a diet primarily consisting of salads - and not the diverse kind. Expect to be limited to basic greens, tomatoes, and cucumbers, with olive oil as the only dressing option. Additionally, obtaining alternative milk options like oat or almond milk was surprisingly challenging, especially given the high cost associated with this facility. It is disheartening that such basic dietary preferences and requirements were not adequately addressed. I entered Castle Craig seeking help for alcohol-related issues, having previously undergone rehabilitation six years earlier. I maintained sobriety for an extended period until experiencing a relapse years later. Before admission, I was specifically instructed to have my home psychiatrist provide a prescription for all my medications and a summary of my long-term treatment under his care. Notably, I do not have any substance abuse problems with benzodiazepines or antidepressants. During a Zoom session with the head psychiatrist before my arrival, I received assurance that none of my prescriptions would be altered or discontinued as long as Castle Craig received the necessary documentation from my home psychiatrist. However, on the first day at Castle Craig, I encountered a significant surprise - all of my medications, including my antidepressants, were confiscated. Despite my resistance, I was only allowed half the usual dose of one antidepressant, and my other antidepressants and benzodiazepines were completely withdrawn. This contradicted the explicit assurances provided during my pre-admission Zoom meeting. This unexpected turn of events felt like a calculated move to exploit financial gains, creating a stark contrast to the promises made by the lead psychiatrist over Zoom. Such deceptive practices are not only unprofessional but also pose a serious threat to my mental health. Castle Craig employs inexpensive, biased, and neglectful doctors who do not adhere to any standards. They refuse to clarify the diagnosis or its implications. Among the nursing staff, there were 3-4 exceptionally kind nurses, but unfortunately, the remainder displayed arrogance, restlessness, and a distinct lack of interest in their duties. One individual, Guy, a male nurse who appears to be working well beyond retirement age, stood out in my experience. He often spent extended periods sitting and playing his guitar in the nurses' office, and he seemed irritated whenever approached for medication or to address a query. What troubled me more was his disregard for hygiene when dispensing my medications. He failed to use gloves every time, and I even witnessed him putting his finger in his mouth before proceeding to dispense my meds without gloves. In a separate incident, he handed me someone else's medication, which I almost took. It only became apparent that they weren't mine when he asked about my nasal spray usage. When I clarified that I didn't use nasal spray and identified myself as Sara, he hurriedly retrieved the wrong meds, and took an additional 10 minutes to rectify the mistake, causing further frustration. The so-called "work" and "lectures" at Castle Craig are laughable; the lectures typically last a mere 25-30 minutes. They involve the lecturer playing a YouTube video and then leaving the room, only to return five minutes before the end of the video and the class. Frequently, they resort to playing a DVD, and if it happens to malfunction, their response is a nonchalant shrug of the shoulders. All AA/CA meetings take place over Zoom, and if technical issues arise, that entire program is discarded as well. The lone exception is a daily meeting, where participants are divided into smaller groups of 5-8 people to engage in meaningful discussions about feelings, provide feedback, and more. These sessions, facilitated by one of the therapists, are the only ones I found to be genuinely beneficial. Despite the substantial amount I paid to stay at Castle Craig, it appears they cut corners even on the heating within the Castle. The indoor temperature hovered around 12 degrees Celsius, as verified on the monitor. The heaters they provide are woefully inadequate; their size is insufficient to warm even a small room, let alone a sizable, old library with outdated doors and windows that fail to keep the cold at bay. Castle Craig is a place of healing for everyone that has come here for help with their addictions. It's a well put professional unit of staff, therapists, doctors who ensure people make the most of their second chance at life. I would recommend this treatment centre to anybody who is going through a tough time regarding their addiction. read more

I went to Castle Craig by my own desicion and with high expectations. On the website it does not appear to be some sort of a religious camp at all. EVERYTHING is about God and "Him". Since I'm not a believer I couldn't stand more than 6 days. When you arrive they ambush you with a folder, 6 books and 4 assignments. This is just for step 1. Step 1 is about admitting that you have a disease and I think you have already done that by coming there. You are only allowed to read the Bible or the books provided by them, all of them about religion and how God can help you from suffering. Then let us go to the medical center. It was very occupied some nurses were really nice and helpful others where just not fit for the job. Mean comments (even on your apperance) and so on. They took all my medicines I'd brought eventhough they were ceiled containers prescribed by doctors. I told them that if I dont get one of those medicines at the exact same time everyday I could get seizures. They did'nt care at all. I've written in my diary that I felt like a prisoner and had no power what so ever. We were also given a so called "buddy" who would lead you through what's expected of you and how the program works. I spoke in total 5 words to mine and she was also an addict on her second week. She was 10 years younger then I am and had some severe problems. They mixed everything from heroinists to alcoholics (I drank about 10 beers a day) who drank a bottle of vodka for breakfast. I liked my therapist in the beginning but then she kept accusing me of stuff saying "its my choice" and that she couldn't meet me the day after because she had other engagements. So I did my assesment with a man who asked me alot of questions about sex and I felt very uncomfortable. She also said that I shouldn't listen to other patients but another one said it's important for my recovery to do so. Mixed signals. There is litterally NOTHING to do. We would sit aorund in dusty sofas from the 70's and someone would tell a horrific story about how he was stabbed because he didn't pay for his cocaine on time. Or someone else who told how she drunk drived with her two small children and crashed in to a wall. There are two chess tables and a scrabble from circa 1992. You get to see one movie a week and all the movies to choose from are from the 90's. You are not aloud to listen to music. They took my book called Sapiens. Its about the human race and homo sapiens it's an educational book. I get that you are supposed to engage in the program and I would but after 9 pm there is nothing else happening so why not let us read then? It felt like a prison. And for 3,500 £ a week it should have been alot better. I saw so many people leave during my six days because they felt the same way as I did. Now let's talk about the food. It says in the folder you get up on your arrival that it's important that you have healthy and nutritious food. I agree. But at Castle Craig the've misunderstood the concept of that. You always get a soup..it tastes the same everyday eventhough it has different names. I described it as vomit mixed with water and a psychotherapist laughed and said it was a good description. The main courses where even worse. Big fat pork bits with fat all around and potato croquettes. I dont call that healthy. There is a salad buffet but there it's just a mixture of the crap from the day before or big chunks of tomates with all the green left. On every single piece. They have one pay phone. You can hardly hear the person on the other side and it costs a fortune. After 6 days I had enough and asked my fiancée to come and bring me home because I couldn't handle crying myself to sleep everynight. Not because I missed the beer but the environment that Castle Craig provided. It smells bad, it's dirty everywhere and there is nothing to do. My suggestion is to go somewhere else. Kind regards, A read more

It has been said that Castle Craig is one of the finest rehabs. Basically when you choose a 12 step rehab centre you won't go wrong. However, Castle Craig suffers from some severe management problems, bad medical staff and bad organisation and communication within the organisation which deeply affects the care to the clients. Some of the finest therapist do work there, but not all of the therapist are on that level and some are simply failing to reach the clients. There is barely time for the staff to make sure all of the clients get the time and care they deserve. There is the primary unit which is managed greatly and organised very well. And then there is the secondary unit. Managed by a megalomanic manager. The medical staff does not attend to the needs of the clients and often make mistakes distributing medication. Castle Craig often promote their clinic by advertising a 50 percent succes rate. When I apply this to the first half of 2014 this is way off. The rate will be more likely closer to 10 percent. Don't get me wrong, if you are honest, willing and open minded, willing to challenge yourself you will make it. But if you have a choice in which 12 step clinic you would go to, I would think twice before choosing this one. read more

Castle Craig Fev. 2019 - March 2019 Just thought I,d write review of my recent stay at Castle Craig in England. This is a private rehab. Hospital which treats predominently Dutch patients. I was meant to be their for sixteen weeks, six in the Intensive therapy Unit and ten in the extended care unit, but I left after 12 weeks. I did not quite get cured and since returning to Rotterdam I have fallen back into my old habits of coke, vodka and partying, Still, I feel that castle craig tried their best but I was not just ready to give up my wondeful social life. Maybe try again one day if insurance can be persuaded to pay again. From Day one they tried to remove all the fun from my life. They didn;t seem to understand that I had been a cokehead for 12 years and could not give it up over night. The doctors and medical staff were very nice but they said there hands were bound by the rules. The first few nights were bad as I could not sleep for more than hr1 at a tiem and this got me in the bad books with my fellow roommates. Maybe 4 of us in aroom wa not the best idea. From Day one I was expected to get my arse to a meetig at 8.30 to say prayers - not for me! I soon realized that noone would come and get me out of bed - even when I had been there for 14 days. Thought I might get punished by not beeng allowed to go shopping in Biggar (town near) but this did not happen. Daily routine was meetings, meetings , food, meetings, boredom, food, meetings, boredom then bed. Meetings were taken by therapists - some were really nice but my therapist watzed of on holiday at end of day 21 and was replaced by someoe who I think was stillb being trained. They kept messing with my head by making appointmnents then changing them- how was a girl to concentrate ? I was given a job to do each week such as washing coffee cups, ringing alarm bell in the morning and so. Nobody chased me if I didn;t do my job- some other waster would always do it for me. We were a varietyy of persons. Young ones (like me!) Wanted to party and forget about God and addiction and stuff.. there were some old people their who seemed quiet serious and spent there time on the computer and writing notes - their loss. There was one old guy called Ben who pretended to be one of us but was to old, he upset loads of people by playing silly jokes - the nurses kept catching him and got angry. Acouple of patients told on him but I would never do that.He reely upset a girl who had been on Big Brother Holland in 2015 - cant say her name. She had got prenant after Big Brother and had kept on taking ket - he said she was a bad mother but I didnt agree. She was real glam and got on grate with all of us - she never bothered with meetings and home work - she had all the best clothes and gear cos she was being paid by Endemol - they didnt want her ending it and giving BB a bad name. She was fun to go shopping with but she bout most of her stuff online. Amazon deliver next day in England and it was good to se her happy- got a pair of Vanss of her for -50% Old people likke Ben did not use internet for shopping - he wore the same clothes most days. Got some photos I got my phone back to fone my "sick" mum and managed to hold onto it - mesasage me if you want them. Another friend was an American called Randy - never found out if this was bigging it but could have if I wanted. He was a reel con man - slipped and hrt his back and was going to sue for 1mil euros - didnt tell them that he was a ships captain and usually didnt slip. Food was ok - too much English food but I think a new chef was going to statr - hope he is Dutch. Slept like a boomstan once coke had cleared - no TV in the evening sp played Risk most nights or chatted. ?It would have been good if we had organised games as most people just did there own thing. Ben used to play chess and scramble. On Friday night we had entertainment where one of the nurses sung and palyed guitar - quite good, but would have been better with coke ! One of the nurses works in the hospital prison Carstares - he is more mad than me as he is buiding a nuclear shelter at his house - Carsters sounds like a real prison as you cannot smuggle anything in - not even up your bum. Maybe Castle Craig should do the same !! we met the big boss one day - she is a lovely old woman called mccaan - she started this place years ago and I think it was much better then. Maybe standards have slipped as English patients cannot afford to come here and they need us Dutch. Once out I od'd on coffee vodka and coke. Smoking was allowed so I cant see how they can turn us from addicts to normal people. If I have to go back to rehab I would like to go somewhere with more rules - Castle Carig was ok but I think they put money in advance of getting me better. Need more staff and more entertainment - put on wieght as could only go to gym for 30 mins twice per week. No organised outdoor ents. -could of wak=lked in woods but couldnt be arsed - Ben thought he walked 12 read more

My son had a really negative experience at Castle Craig. Don't feel that the service that they offer is fit for purpose. Really hard to find honest reviews regarding their treatment but they let my son down badly and we are very unhappy with the lack of compassion and care there. read more

History
Established in 1988.
When Castle Craig was founded in 1988, Peter and Dr Margaret Ann McCann arrived in Scotland with a vision and a passion for helping those suffering from addiction. They had taken a leap of faith, leaving behind Clouds House in Wiltshire and bringing their young family north to Scotland to launch the first 12 Step rehab clinic Scotland had seen. In the late 1980s, this was truly groundbreaking. At the time, Scotland had no residential rehab clinics, and it was a relatively new phenomenon in the UK. Peter McCann had spent time in Hazelden in the United States, learning from their successful treatment programme in order to bring it over to the UK. Peter and Margaret Ann worked closely together from the very beginning, with Peter trailblazing the voice of recovery in Britain among politicians, the media and healthcare experts, and Margaret Ann leading the medical care and therapy programme within the hospital.

I have today enquired about my partner being admitted to Castle Craig and was very impressed by the empathetic ear at the end of the phone by one of the admissions staff..Don. Both my partner and I have good working knowledge in the field of addiction rehabilitation and Castle Craig offers therapies that most other rehab's don't, in particular Trauma/PTSD and the Hyperbaric Therapy. I have searched long and hard to even find a provider with the mix of service provision the like of Castle Craig. We hope he will be afforded a place there. I would like to take issue with the first reviewer of Castle Craig...unfortunately your negative comments are quite typical of someone with no understanding of what a rehab does but most importantly what a rehab does NOT do. Your husband is an adult and responsibility for whether he remains in treatment or not is his and his alone. Rehab's are not in the habit of withholding a persons money from them when they self-discharge, In essence an establishment's duty of care to a patient ends at the point of discharge unless there are life threatening issues which warrant extending a duty of care. If your husband used the money to buy drugs then he would have been responsible for making that CHOICE not Castle Craig for returning his money to him. A rehab is also not responsible for any comments made by fellow patients anymore than a Doctor would be responsible for comments made by a patient in the bed next to you in a general hospital. Patients are sick and will say things that are not understood outside of the context of the therapeutic environment. Staff at CC cannot possibly be held accountable for it. Regards your statement about information sharing with you by telephone..unless your husband gave explicit authority IN WRITING to staff they would be unable to confirm his presence there or give you any info about him by phone. Thank God for the confidentiality statements, there are legal guidelines for this and for good reason too. However,I have benefited from your review, not least of which is I now know at the very least his privacy will be closely guarded, he will be treated as a responsible adult and if he is stupid enough to leave treatment early he will be transported safely with care to the train station by CC staff. I take great comfort from that!!! read more

As a former patient at Castle Craig, with over twenty years clean time, I am afraid I would have to dispute much of what was said in the earlier review. The first question that springs to mind is why did I go to castle Craig, to get better is the short and simple and answer and fortunately I succeeded in this. However to get better I had to listen to what the Therapists were telling me and NOT that of my fellow patients, some of whom were very sick, both physically and mentally. The previous review raises a number of issues such as patient confidentiality when someone calls the hospital, maybe they have patients there that don't want anyone to know they are there and therefore have a general policy to cover all incoming calls to protect the confidentiality of patients. I realise they now run a family programme at Castle Craig and I am sure there are costs associated with this such as accommodation, food and staffing and it may be that these extra costs cannot be charged to the funders therefore they have to be charged somewhere. You also mention something about intimacy, if you had a conversation with the staff about this you would have got a completely different answer, same applies to the rubbish about the postcard comment uttered by a patient. When your partner was dropped of in Edinburgh, the money he had would have been his own money and at the end of the day its up to him what he wants to do with that, it would not be the responsibility of Castle Craig. From what I know in over twenty five years Castle Craig has had something like 10,000 patients, it is one of the biggest facilities in the UK and has over 100 beds, they must be doing something right! They may not have been able to help your partner however maybe you have to look at the possibility that your partner wasn't ready to be helped, which if anyone knows is key to any form of recovery. read more
