The house is lovingly cared for, and the gardens are breathtaking. I visited the house with AP students, so I was very pleased it was such a marvelously atmospheric place. There is a walk you can take down to town- it's quite steep, with lots of gravel- so I didn't go, but my students loved it. I walked down the street to take in the church (St Mary's), just at the end of the street- quite a nice place, don't miss it, and the field Wordsworth planted daffodils in when he was devastated at the loss of his daughter, is there as well- Dora's Field- it's part of the National Trust. There's a little gate opposite the doors of St Mary's and you can see the field. The family are buried at St Oswald's Chruch down in Grassmere- also worth a visit.

The upstairs museum is a bit more formal and educational, but the downstairs is an exhibition about life in the area with computer screens showing Wordsworth's sister's diaries as well as bits about shepherds and naming local places with nicknames. There is separate room where kids can do drawing and word games. I think that bit is free. Worth the money if you don't know much about Wordsworth. I didn't think I was interested but I am now.

Hawkshead Grammar School was founded in 1585 by Edwin Sandys Archbishop of York, who had been born…read morea mile south of Hawkshead. It was William Wordsworth's school. It closed in 19 after the opening of Victoria School in Ulverston on the south coast of Cumbria which was then Lancashire. The museum operates a guided tour which brings the School to life. You can feel the atmosphere and almost believe you are in a working schoolroom of 200 years ago. Admission is £2 (with discounts for groups of over 12 people) and £1 for Senior Citizens. Children under 15 go free if they are with their parents. Instead, I was…read morein for a wonderful surprise and Wordsworth's carving turned out to be minor in comparison to everything else learned about that school. I highly recommend making the effort to visit. The review written by Lorraine B in 2009 is still valid today in 2019 so I will not repeat the information. But, I will say that this was on of the highlights of my visit to the Lakes District. As a side note, my great+8 grandfather was arrested in 1555 by Queen Mary, just as Edwin Sandys was. However, he was not as lucky and did not escape. Instead he was burned at the stake in Coventry for religious treason.

Great family day out. We've been many times, usually at Bank Holidays. Facilities include funfair…read morerides, stalls selling clothing, toys, food and drink. Race Cards on sale, as well as the Tote. Dozens of Bookmakers. Many people take a gazebo and have a barbecue. We usually just have minimum stake bets, but often win - recently four winners on a seven race card. Parking is OK, but the field adjacent to the course used for parking has hidden boulders so beware. Last time (May 2015) not enough toilets, therefore big queues.
