While we were here there was a group of first graders scooping bugs out of the water with nets. They were so excited! Leashed dogs are allowed, so we walked our pups on a couple of the trails and saw flocks of many birds enjoying the wetland. Teaming with life! We were just driving by on a camping trip and stopped. This was a grade C campground. Wildcat Mountain is so named because the locals killed a wildcat…read morethere many years ago. The campsite we stayed in, #8, was directly across from the Park Office and was not secluded at all. We did see some other campsites that were secluded, but they all seem pretty close together, so if you're looking for privacy, search elsewhere. But the place was neat and clean, and the toilets were not bad at all. Not many bugs in June, in the toilets, and the toilets did not smell bad. The good thing about camping across from the Park Office is you get to use their beautiful facilities when they are open. The staff were super friendly and helpful. Just by sheer happenstance we heard on the radio that Natural Bridge State Park was in the area and it sounded cool, so we drove over there to see it and it's so beautiful! The Overlook Point here at Wildcat is also very beautiful and easy to get to. We walked most of the Starlight trail, until it got overgrown, but it was nice and level and an easy hike. The Amphitheater...whoa. This was definitely the most rustic one I've ever seen so far. And I can't imagine one that would be more rustic than this one. It's not bad, it's just small, the seats tip forward, the stage is barely a stage, I don't see how they can possibly hold productions on it, but what do I know? I'm not in the theater--I'm sure they make it work somehow. It's very intimate and cozy, let's put it that way. We came across a gigantic moth at the base of a tree and it turned out to be a Luna Moth, which after it emerges from its cocoon doesn't have mouth parts, so it can't eat! It lives a week to breed, and then dies! All in all, it's not worth a very far drive, but if you're in the general area and want to camp, it's OK. At least it was not noisy at night. Some really nice campgrounds have lots of nice features but are super loud in the evening. This one was quiet, and you could see tons of stars.

Wildcat Mountain State Park is a beautiful but smaller gem in the Wisconsin SP system. If you're…read morelucky enough to reserve one of the only 20 campsites on a weekend, good for you! (We were not quick enough on the draw). But the campgrounds by the entrance look very nice. In 2020 it's all Do It Yourself parking passes and camp check-in. We enjoyed the lookout stop, complete with a "selfie station" to put your phone. We also did a nice, but mildly rigorous hike of the Old Settler's Trail. The 2.5 mile trail has some steep stairs and elevation changes (don't wear your fashionable high heeled boots like we saw an older lady struggling down the stairs with). Would love to see the trail marked a little better- markings seem to date back a few decades, and we got lost on a switchback. (Note: the nicer looking Hemlock Trail was closed off June 2020 due to erosion or weather.) We loved the hike and the park, and it was nice to have access to clean bathrooms. Sitting at a picnic table enjoying lunch, there was an incredible amount of great bird watching! And yes, a drive or cycle through this park is incredible.

I'm always an ever a fan of an expanse of green in any city or town…read more Lately, it feels like every time we travel, we seek out a park in which to picnic. Turns out, I'm a bit of a Yogi Bear at heart (Hey Boo Boo...let's go get us a pic-a-nic basket). Only, unlike that thievin' bear, I bring my own bountiful basket. So, while cruising around the Dells, I thought--why not have a picnic in a park. Enter Bowman Park. It's a great park to enjoy a picnic. They have a few picnic tables scattered here and there as well as plenty of shade--so, perfect for picnicking! Beyond that, there's a large field near their bandshell/pavilion that is plenty big for sports (and indeed, while we were there, there was a group of guys playing a casual game of football). The field is sort of sunken, so that if there were a concert going on that brought a good sized crowd, you could get a spot on the berm above and still have a great view of the band. The don't allow pets of any sort (leashed or unleashed) in the park, which was a bummer as we had our dog (it wasn't hot, so she was able to hang in the car with the windows down, but she would have much rather rolled around on the lawn). Other than that? A great little park, conveniently located to many walkable restaurants and shops. Get to it!

I'll start off by saying this. Oh. My. God. Gnarly. I felt like a little chuggin train myself on…read morethis trail, choo choo -in through limestone ravines and and beer slingin rural towns. I got hit in the face by 3 grass hoppers & about 17 butterflies. It was magical. Scattered wooden bridges are found every other mile so you can make it across the raging baraboo river. It was not ragin but rather peaceful like a river you would find in the shire, near bilbo Baggins hobbit home. So what's with the tunnels? I'll say this. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, but it is merely a candle light fading off into the distance. The pitch black man-made pieces of history feel like air conditioning units out of a bikers dream. With rustling springs. Tip-keep your bike light off, walk slow, feel like your floating or about to fall. It's exhilarating, natures THC. another tip-be careful! At some points on the trail you'll come across lose gravel! Just make sure you don't look off into the distance at a pretty tree and cabin. You'll crash into your boyfriend bike and get trail rash. :) Have fun!

Ship Rock Wayside is a small, but well maintained loop of relatively new concrete which circles the…read morerock formation. In all my visits over the years, including this one, there wasn't anyone else there at all. This formation isn't as large or well-visited as the larger Roche-A-Cri park and formation, and where it's situated out of the way on Highway 21, it's not exactly something one is likely to "stumble" upon. The park is small, and dominated by the rocks. There is a "path" of sorts that leads up the rock structure, but this is a rough climbing route, so scale the rock at your own risk. All the same, it's a striking formation with a certain duality to it- the colorful shades of weathered rock on top, and the even more colorful layers of spray paint the locals have applied over the years. If you want to see something out of the way, or have ever wanted to climb a big rock, Ship Rock is out there waiting for you.
