Ocean Street also has quite a few restaurants and fast-food places, so if you can turn your quick stop for gas into a full refueling stop if you so choose. When I am traveling, my preference is always to stop at a gas station that offers something more than pumping and go. I prefer having a convenience store attached to the gas station in case I'm looking for something to drink, some gum or perhaps even a quick snack. Cleanliness is always a huge plus. This particular Valero's has a convenience store, and unhappy people that work there. We stopped to get gas, and walked inside to pay and grab a quick drink. The cashier was extremely unpleasant, and it was very clear not only was unhappy to be there, but he was clearly inconvenienced by us making a purchase. After we paid, we went out to pump the gas and the pump was not even ready for us to use. We had to walk back inside, and ask for him to turn the pump on. Literally standing there waiting for what felt like eternity, but was probably about two minutes or so until he decided to turn the pump on. No one else was there, so it should not of been an issue. The station itself is pretty basic, and snacks were at a minimum. The station was also fairly clean, as far as gas stations go. My issue at the station, was the attitude that the attendant had, and why it seems to go unnoticed. Clearly, he has worked there for a while and it doesn't seem to be an issue for management. As expensive as gasoline is, I certainly plan on going somewhere else, rather than spending my money in a place where it doesn't seem to be welcomed

The station is usually clean, and the whole process is quick, which I really appreciate when I am just trying to get gas and keep going. The service is also good there, the staff is friendly, and they usually keep everything moving quickly. Prices are reasonable compared to some other places in the area, and overall it feels like a reliable spot. Good gas station and one I like to use when I am nearby.

A perfect car wash if your car is already clean or you like unpleasant customer service!…read more Sigh, I actually had a very positive view of this place, and would recommend them as a nice place to get gas, but unfortunately today we tried the car wash. I was really excited, it seemed high tech and nice, and was excited to make it my go-to. Unfortunately it did not get the car clean (even with the highest level of wash available), and when we got back home we saw there were black speckles on about 8 of the body panels on our pretty new and recently waxed car. This was handily the worse wash we have tried in the area. I wasn't worried because the other places we had dealt with recently would just send us back through if there were any problems, so we headed back over to the wash to help them make it right. When we got there I described my problem, and there was clearly stress about it so this was not the first time it had happened. The person who seemed in charge wanted to see it, so I took him out and showed him the speckles fully expecting an easy solution. Unfortunately he rather brusquely informed me that it was only on a small area (8 body panels is apparently small) and that he could offer to let me buy a towel for something like another 3 bucks so that I could clean it myself. Are you serious? You're going to try to upsell on a customer retention issue?!? Absurd. When we looked around we noticed signs advertising towels for your car wash implying that they were for finishing the job not drying the car. This was not the first time they had had this conversation. I went home and used my own towel and quick detailer to finish they job they failed to do, and most certainly wiped the 4 dollars extra worth of wax upsell off on the 8 body panels that I found myself having to clean by hand having payed for an automatic car wash an hour before. So the way I see it: 3 stars for a below average wash at a slightly lower price than some, minus one star for trying to upsell me and asking me for my labor to get the job done, and minus another star for the bad customer experience/ attitude. Even a simple apology and explanation that touch less car washes have advantages but also technical limits would have avoided everyone reading this review, but that's not what happened:-/ Really unfortunate, we liked this place, but I don't see any reason why we should support a place that does this kind of stuff.

In fact, my 240k-mile Subaru has been run almost exclusively on Costco gas thanks to the proximity of my work to a Costco Gas Station. Their gas is rated Top Tier™, and that isn't a meaningless proclamation, as TT means a higher quality of gas. Even Consumer Reports agrees: https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/fuel-economy-efficiency/top-tier-gasoline-worth-the-extra-price-a7682471234/ The Good: * Costco gas is almost always the cheapest in the area regardless of where you live. They intentionally run it at 20-30¢/gal cheaper than the market average because they use it as a loss leader. * One of the few Costco gas locations that carries diesel. * 5% cash back on the Costco Citi card is kind of hot, especially considering our gas prices as of late. The Meh: * No amenities here like paper towels and window washing equipment. Hell, you're lucky they even have garbage cans! * Members Only. But I mean honestly, does anyone in The Bay *not* have a Costco membership??? The Ugly: * The Santa Cruz station is priced 50¢/gal higher than San José gas stations. Like at most gas stations these days, there's a ten-cent discount per gallon when you pay with cash. The cashier was very friendly and had my change waiting for me before I had even walked back inside. The gas pumps have seen better days and can use a power-washing. It's annoyingly complicated to get back onto Mission Street westbound. It's possible (and legal) to turn left onto Mission Street from the station, but cars are usually backed up at the Walnut Avenue light. It's also possible (and legal) to turn right onto Walnut Avenue from the station, but if the station is crowded, you might not be able to get back to that side of the pumps, depending on which side of your car you fueled up from. In short, there's not too much room to maneuver, and the neighborhood itself has really confusing streets. If you're planning it beforehand, you're probably better off coming to the station when you're headed east on Mission and want to continue heading east after you fill up. When I came, I was headed west and wanted to continue west.
