So disappointed with my experience with this clinic! What I was hoping to get me back on track with…read morelosing weight has turned into a expensive experience. Within in a week of signing a contract I was told the clinic was closing at the end of June! The thing is that it was known before I signed that it was closing. So what would you call this? Hmmm!

To be fair, the staff at Healthy Woman are very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful and I think…read moretheir intentions are in the right place with weight loss. Some percentage of clients seem to be successful, although I haven't seen any statistics. It's a pleasant place to work out, with basically the Curves circuit. The reason I am giving Healthy Woman two stars is that in my experience, their business practices lack genuine human compassion and the program itself leaves something to be desired from a health and effectiveness standpoint. I guess I would characterize it as having little, if any, soul. A month after joining Healthy Woman, my spouse passed away unexpectedly, which caused extreme emotional and financial hardship. I tried to stay with the program, when I returned after a few weeks' break, but after a couple months of putting what little energy I had left into it, I realized that I just couldn't do it anymore. So, I asked the owner if I could please be let out of the rest of my contract, under the circumstances. He said "no" and that he owed it to himself, his family and others at Healthy Woman to not honor "requests like this," which he got often. I find it hard to imagine that so many of his clients lose spouses during the course of the program, but whatever. I guess compassion don't keep the lights on. While this response was personally disheartening, as a businesswoman, it makes no sense from a business standpoint, considering that word-of-mouth is likely more than 80% of how they attract clients. If my review keeps even one person from joining, they've lost out in $1,700 in membership fees and a potential of at least $1,000 in supplements and services. Letting me out of my contract would have lost them about $950. My second reason for giving Healthy Woman two stars is because I have done a lot of my own research on nutrition for years, and although I was a bit horrified by the idea of supplementing with soy protein bars made with artificial sweeteners and eating low-fat, I was sucked in by their claims of the program's effectiveness at my initial appointment and decided to suspend judgement in the hopes of reaching my weight loss goal. Initially, I did lose around 10 pounds in a little over three months, although some of it I can attribute to the grief process. Ultimately, my weight loss drastically slowed down and ground to a halt, despite following the program pretty perfectly after I returned. The last straw that made me realize I was over my head both emotionally and financially was when they told me I had reached the end of the weight-loss phase, and while I was 20 pounds short of my goal, they said I needed to go into a sort of maintenance phase, or pay "only" $40 more a month on top of the $79 a month I already pay to stay in the weight-loss phase. I was definitely never told that if you do not reach your goal by a certain time, you would have to pay extra to continue in that phase. Granted, I could still stay at the current payment rate, but I would be given a different monthly journal to complete and would basically be on my own if I wanted to continue weight-loss. While it is not mandatory to pay extra, it bothered me that they were trying to get $40 more a month out of me under the circumstances and because there's no additional value-added, in actuality. The owner did offer to waive this after I requested he terminate my contract, but I was already so overwhelmed and disgusted, I decided to never go back. Plus, I won't associate myself with an organization that espouses values of caring for women, but does not truly have compassion to offer individuals on a case by case basis. Bottom line, aside from my unique circumstances, it stopped working as advertised, it is very expensive for what it is - $79 a month, for 15 months in my case, with an initial $499 up front, and they regularly try to sell you on add-on products and services that are also very expensive, not to mention the $40 add-on scam. Very disappointing, I guess buyer beware is my take-away.
