The cafe sits above one of the many nick nack shops selling the sort of useless crap you would never ever consider parting good money with were it not for the fact that you are on holiday and money doesn't actually work like that on holiday. It's impossibly small up there. Three people work behind a counter big enough for only one and a half. They manage to stick five tables in where only three should really fit, one with a comfy sofa should you be lucky enough to bagsy it. The loo defies all laws of physics and you shouldn't attempt negotiating it unless you are a black belt in yoga. But there is room outside too. And the aspect is rather lovely. You have the war memorial behind you which seems to act as the city centre, a meeting place always and a market place once a week (if you can call six stalls a market) where all the bright coloured cagouls congregate. In front of you is the splendid St David's Cathedral, well over a thousand years old sitting at the bottom of the hill that we're mercifully at the top of. It's beautifully picturesque and a nice way to while away an hour in the morning with their decent coffee, excellent hot chocolate or standard tea. The menu is full of wonderful options for morning coffee, light lunches and afternoon tea and a side table displays a tempting range of baked goodies and as well as a variety of homemade jams and chutneys. Our large, steaming bowls of vegetarian cawl, delicately spiced and chock full of veg, were absolutely delicious. I wouldn't hesitate to go back and, if I lived locally, it would become one of my regular haunts. So why haven't I given them 5 stars? Well, they had a board in the city, advertising the tea room and stating that they offered gluten free soups and bread. As I was travelling with a friend who follows a wheat/dairy free diet, we visited with great anticipation! But the bread (whilst gluten free) contained milk, the cakes (whilst gluten free) contained butter... and there was no soya milk on offer for tea/coffee. With so many people following special diets these days, there really is no excuse for tea rooms, coffee shops, restaurants and pubs not to offer, at the very least, soya milk for a cuppa!

To give you a sample, on a recent visit, I had hummus with spiced lamb and golden raisins, served with homemade toasted focaccia , with bara brith for afters, and an ocean of tea. Note the location is _only_ accessible by foot, unless you are a Blue Badge holder. There is a National Trust car park three minutes walk away. You would also be fifteen minutes (steep) walk from Marloes Beach, which is beautiful. You can book, although there is no need if you're happy to sit outside.

The food is excellent, especially their Victoria spongecake which is mouthwateringly good! Cakes aside they also serve sandwiches, ciabattas, paninis, as well as hot and cold drinks. The shop/cafe is right on the road guarding the entrance to the car park next to the falls by the bridge. Have a full breakfast and ask to take your laden plateful down to the waters edge or use one of the picnic tables nestling in the wooded slope. The food is cafe style - straight forward - coffee is instant so don't get too exited by the idea of a Costa style Americano - this is getting back to nature stuff. Either pay £2 for the car park here or scoot round to the other side of the river and turn down the road by the Three Horseshoes Inn, hoping to find a free car park space down on the right (if lucky as only a few)- absolutely gorgeous spot frequented by salmon fishermen and happy watchers. Get your walking boots on and tramp upstream if the fancy takes you and you have more time - or just laze around for a bit and then head off to Cardigan (maybe stopping at Cilgerran Castle for spectacular views over the gorge). A couple of other spots in the village might be worth poking your head around, like the pub and the local antiques center and nearby cheese factory, again if you have time. Recommended location.
