Since we're doing a St. Francis of Assisi Church Pilgrimage this year, his 800th year, we stopped…read moreback at Bend (doing an event in Redmond) to attend Sunday's Mass. Fr. Victor (same name as our youngest), must have a good memory, because he smiled at me when I walked in the front door (I was wearing the same top, different skirt). Talking briefly to Fr. Victor, after mass, he remembered me again, and told me to wait for him for our separate blessing, after he had acknowledge the rest of the parishioners. I love the fact that I started to carry on a conversation to the two Knights of Columbus members, out front, setting up a table for today's Breakfast Burrito Fundraising. (Then, again, on our way to the parking lot). Thank you, Fr. Victor for the group photo & blessing for our upcoming anniversary! I love the fact, that we can follow through, the same Missal as the other church, since it's the same church, same priest, why not! The pews, are awkward though, we ended up sitting in the middle, for several reasons. One we got stuck with a tall guy, and this is the first time hubby wants us to move. "I can't see!" Yes, I agree, sometimes, it's hard to hear what Fr. was saying, because of the speakers! (We were able to make it home back to Portland, to attend a 2nd mass on EWTN). We also bought 2 Breakfast Burrito, and we had a picnic in our car, before we went in for our event, from the back door.

Inside, another greeter told us more about the church and introduced us to the pastor. He then followed up by telling us about the "Empty Nesters" group within the church that hosts monthly theme potlucks and other activities. We were introduced to a couple in that group who invited us to a gathering that very afternoon. Since then, we have continued to meet new people of all ages throughout the church by attending a host of events. We were looking for a scripture-based church, and this is it. Although the pastoral staff has changed since we started attending, Pastor Pete and guest speakers have led the congregation with remarkable sermons that leave me with new insight every time.

Today my husband and I went and met the new directors Alfonso and Luz Juarez. They are the new…read moredirectors of the Bend offices as of July 2025. I have always given donations by mail, but a few weeks ago I was leaving Hobby Lobby and Alfonso was out front ringing the bell. We had a great conversation about the work they do and all that has changed since he and Luz came to Bend. They are amazing! I decided to go by the Salvation Army buildings at 515 NE DeKalb. Alfonso and Luz are dedicated to serving the community. The amount of work the two of them have put into serving families for Christmas, oh my gosh! There was an enormous room with everything laid out for Christmas gifts for families, HUNDREDS of gifts. We plan on helping them as much as we can in the future. There is a well stocked food bank that has so many items for free. Please support this ministry here in Bend!!

The old crew at Salvation Army was wonderful. Always on time and smiling with a well stocked…read morepantry. The new crew is always and I mean always late up to an hour while we are standing out in the cold. You arrive at 1pm and then they put a sign out saying not open until 2 and were frozen by the time they let us in. Do not bother coming at 9 am because they are late in the morning and the afternoon. It is not the same at all and the food is not the same either. There is lots of pastries and hardly any meat or edible veggies. Makes me wonder what happened. Does anyone know or have an answer. Please bring back the old crew they NEVER let us stand outside in the wind and cold....EVER. If you try to call...no one answers the phone. I posted something last month and thought, no give them one more chance and today I was left standing in the cold again with people that were sick and had colds so I AM posting it this time. Years ago I ran a food bank, shelter and was a case manger with over 600 clients so they need to work on their time management skills.
