We knew Unity has distinct beliefs, but weren't prepared for the congregation to howl together at the opening: "Welcome to Unity, a wild soul sanctuary (entire congregation howls)....". The church is small (about 150 members), yet no one greeted us before, during, or after the service...even though we didn't want to feel pressure, we didn't want to be ignored entirely, so it was disconcerting to not be greeted at all. The 75-minute service felt disjointed: multiple rounds of announcements, a couple of songs, a children's segment, and a long "celebrations" portion where people shared personal updates, leaving only about 20 minutes for the sermon. Unfortunately, the message itself was confusing and hard to follow. We left feeling uninspired, which was disappointing for Easter Sunday. The most difficult part was three regular attendees in front of us who talked throughout the entire service, despite others trying to quiet them. It was so distracting that my family member with limited mobility wanted to move but couldn't due to lack of seating. We knew they were regulars because of how they were engaging with each other and other members of the church, plus one of them, a blond woman with shorter hair, was serving food after the service. We wished that this church would ask their congregation to be mindful of guests and be considerate of the experience others might want to have, particularly during a holiday service. He then followed up by telling us about the "Empty Nesters" group within the church that hosts monthly theme potlucks and other activities. We were introduced to a couple in that group who invited us to a gathering that very afternoon. Since then, we have continued to meet new people of all ages throughout the church by attending a host of events. We were looking for a scripture-based church, and this is it. Although the pastoral staff has changed since we started attending, Pastor Pete and guest speakers have led the congregation with remarkable sermons that leave me with new insight every time.

Victor (same name as our youngest), must have a good memory, because he smiled at me when I walked in the front door (I was wearing the same top, different skirt). Talking briefly to Fr. Victor, after mass, he remembered me again, and told me to wait for him for our separate blessing, after he had acknowledge the rest of the parishioners. I love the fact that I started to carry on a conversation to the two Knights of Columbus members, out front, setting up a table for today's Breakfast Burrito Fundraising. (Then, again, on our way to the parking lot). Thank you, Fr. Victor for the group photo & blessing for our upcoming anniversary! I love the fact, that we can follow through, the same Missal as the other church, since it's the same church, same priest, why not! The pews, are awkward though, we ended up sitting in the middle, for several reasons. One we got stuck with a tall guy, and this is the first time hubby wants us to move. "I can't see!" Yes, I agree, sometimes, it's hard to hear what Fr. was saying, because of the speakers! (We were able to make it home back to Portland, to attend a 2nd mass on EWTN). We also bought 2 Breakfast Burrito, and we had a picnic in our car, before we went in for our event, from the back door.
