Its a Cathedral, and was made to be the seat of the Roman Catholic Church in Buffalo. Cathedrals are usually the seat of the Bishop. Buffalo had a Bishop after it was made its own Diocese in the 1840s or so. Bishop Timon was the first Bishop of the Buffalo Diocese. He had to go fundraising in Europe to gather the funds to build the Cathedral. HIs parish members were making very little money and would not have been able to raise the funds locally. After raising some funds in Europe, he came back to Buffalo and realized that he might need more money. Off he went to Mexico to connect with wealthy Catholics there. He finally had enough money to break ground in 1851. But not enough money to finish the whole thing easily. He had to actually go to the president Millard Fillmore for a donation at one point. The Catholics who did not make enough money to donate funds donated time and skills to keep the project moving along. The building opened in 1855. The walls and roof were up. there was still work to be done inside, and some of the windows had not yet arrived, but it was open. It was consecrated (debt free) in 1863. The church has one of the best 19th century organs in the country, still working today. Bishop Timon is buried here in the basement crypt, seems fitting after spending much of his life building it.

I love this place!…read more It's out of my way, but I love the message Pastor Jerry and the others deliver; I'm happy to make the drive for it. I've never been there and left thinking "Well that wasn't worth getting up for." I love the messages and I love the contemporary atmosphere. I came from another Mega Church (Assemblies of God), but was raised on traditional Presbyterian services, and The Chapel (non-denominational) has really found a good place in my heart. The message is always pointed back towards Jesus and God, I've never heard them preach ANY sort of discrimination against any group, it's always about treating people with kindness, and they're not pushy in the least about tithing (which makes me gladly give on Sundays). In fact, while it's not ornate like the Presbyterian churches I grew up in, which I'm surprisingly cool with, I prefer it to the hip and cool Assemblies of God Mega Church I attended in my old city. The Chapel is like the matured and self confident church and made my old one feel like a pathetic, attention seeking teenager. I love it and have always felt welcomed, whereas some other churches I've felt like people are sizing me up and thinking "umm....not holy enough." Not The Chapel; God bless The Chapel (no pun intended). :)

Aarum still serves on the board of directors of the camp. By the way, this senior pastor worked closely with the youth. I moved back recently from San Francisco after a few years there. I see the same issue arising at The Chapel again. Please note, to read unfavorable reviews, unlike the good ones, they make you through an App. So much for transparency.

In addition to the gorgeous main altar and stunning vaulted ceiling, stained glass windows, and other religious effects, the choir and the organist and the German-American band were all in top form. This year's German Mass was held December 4, and it was the largest turnout I have seen for the annual event. German language missals are provided so that even those unfamiliar with German may follow along. This is a splendid Christmas event that I recommend to everyone, regardless of personal beliefs. Architecturally and historically, the church is also on many must-visit lists for Buffalo, New York.
