I hoped and prayed my husband would find a church in the Buffalo area once we moved here and am so thankful God spoke to our hearts and said "This one." (Lol.) Don't be fooled by the location: Epic Church meets at a movie theater (I actually think that's awesome), but knows how to get down. If you love a strong message that's practical, filled with the Word of God, and has some humor and casual moments, this place is for you. Even if that's not your cup of tea, this place is still for you. Pastor Mark Rouse is a great preacher who doesn't spend two hours delivering a sermon (I love passionate pastors, but mama the Fruit of the Spirit leaves me when I'm hangry), but takes his time to break things down. Even though he spends 20-30 mins preaching -- which might not feel like a ton of time -- it's food for the soul that will nourish you beyond service. The majority of his sermons follow a series, and Epic provides attendees with notes you can collect, study, and go over. The sermons are also online for convenience. Another thing I love about Epic is the childcare. Unlike other churches I've been to, where kids might color and learn something about Noah and the Ark, there are lesson plans (yes, lesson plans) for the preschool and elementary age classes. (Kids are just too small in the nursery to care.) I serve on the kids' team and am constantly amazed at the thought and preparation that goes into the lessons each and every week. In addition to play time (coloring, etc.), children are leaning about Jesus, God's grace, and characters in the Bible in a fun and interactive way. Plus, there's always some craft to take home to parents. Epic Church also believes in community, both local and afar. They have outreach programs that include providing donations for nearby families in need, working with organizations (there are some great contacts to serve incoming refugees), and mission trips abroad. There are also small groups throughout the year (outreach is a focus area, for example) for your to meet new people who share similar interests. This is more than just an ordinary church that you say you attend on Sundays. It's a resource to strengthen your walk with God and challenges you to serve others. As I always say: don't talked about it, be about it -- and my how Epic does this. In case you can't tell, I really like it.

Its a Cathedral, and was made to be the seat of the Roman Catholic Church in Buffalo. Cathedrals are usually the seat of the Bishop. Buffalo had a Bishop after it was made its own Diocese in the 1840s or so. Bishop Timon was the first Bishop of the Buffalo Diocese. He had to go fundraising in Europe to gather the funds to build the Cathedral. HIs parish members were making very little money and would not have been able to raise the funds locally. After raising some funds in Europe, he came back to Buffalo and realized that he might need more money. Off he went to Mexico to connect with wealthy Catholics there. He finally had enough money to break ground in 1851. But not enough money to finish the whole thing easily. He had to actually go to the president Millard Fillmore for a donation at one point. The Catholics who did not make enough money to donate funds donated time and skills to keep the project moving along. The building opened in 1855. The walls and roof were up. there was still work to be done inside, and some of the windows had not yet arrived, but it was open. It was consecrated (debt free) in 1863. The church has one of the best 19th century organs in the country, still working today. Bishop Timon is buried here in the basement crypt, seems fitting after spending much of his life building it.

Immediately I was overwhelmed by the warmth of the place. To the untrained eye, this could be attributed to any number of things. I know now it's nothing less than God's presence seeping through a hundred different small places all at once. In the music, in the friendliness of the people, in the poetry and Scripture that was read. The poem above was shared that Sunday and I still remember it all these years later. It had a heartfelt impact on me. It was sweet, before the message, a young woman gave a slam poem about Buffalo that was very charming and full of life. My friend Angela, who is very outgoing, befriended a bunch of the young people and invited them over to my apartment for lunch afterwards. At least five people came and the next Sunday, around eight came. All of those people are still friends to this day. It was a very beautiful moment in my life especially because it was a time when I was praying specifically that God would help bring community into my life. I'm super thankful for that! Christians believe that Jesus rose from the dead and is still alive. They believe Jesus sends the Holy Spirit to fill and empower people to be like Jesus was when he was on earth. This church definitely believes that and the people are really faithful to live out that faith in ways that are pretty simple, straightforward and creative. Most of the church is in their 20s and falls into the Elmwood Village crowd. They all really love Jesus and really love people. And that's what Christians are supposed to do so I would say this is a really great church. I wouldn't be surprised if you have seen or will see in the future people with Village Church shirts walking around the neighborhood involved in different things. It's really cool to see a church full of young people passionate about getting involved in the community in so many ways!

It's lovely to walk around, reflect, light candles or say a prayer. At Christmas time it's decorated. And the large Manger scene features a basket of blessed hay for you to take a piece Of. For stairs you can visit the museum and learn about Fr Baker ( and his journey to sainthood) or visit the gift shop and pick up some religious medals or other items, even purchase an empty bottle to fill with holy winter from several of the urns. I and all were greeted by the staff. The stained glass was incredibly brilliant in color. There were 22 different glass panels. The pamphlet offered described each and every window. The technique used in the color of the windows was invented by John Lafarge and refined by Louis Comfort Tiffany. Lovely. The organ player was playing a tune. Nice experience. Buffalo is full of absolutely spectacular imposing Gothic looking european-style old churches and it's one of the things I love most about Buffalo. In addition to the gorgeous main altar and stunning vaulted ceiling, stained glass windows, and other religious effects, the choir and the organist and the German-American band were all in top form. This year's German Mass was held December 4, and it was the largest turnout I have seen for the annual event. German language missals are provided so that even those unfamiliar with German may follow along. This is a splendid Christmas event that I recommend to everyone, regardless of personal beliefs. Architecturally and historically, the church is also on many must-visit lists for Buffalo, New York.

WNY's churches are among the most gorgeous structures in the region, and this is one of a dozen or so truly spectacular structures which is five star inside and out in my personal opinion.
